The Quagga was a zebra-like African mammal which had become extinct in the 1880s. In 1985, a scientist had recovered DNA of the quagga from a piece of quagga hide. This inspired the venture capitalist John Hammond to clone dinosaurs by recovering their DNA. An interesting trivia is that Crichton first wrote a draft story about the cloning of a pterodactyl in 1983, but this was criticized by all those who read it. In fact, he wrote as many as three drafts, all of which were hated by the people who read them. The reason was that he had written it from the view point of a kid. Finally, he decided to write it from the view point of an adult. Another interesting fact is that Universal Studios paid Crichton $2 million for the rights, even before the novel was published!

'Congo' first published in 1980, features an ape Amy that could understand English and communicate through sign language. The character of Amy is based on a real chimpanzee named Koko, that could communicate through sign language. Crichton states that he was inspired by 'King's Solomon's Mines' to write this novel. The novel features a hunt for diamonds in the lost city of Zinj. The city is guarded by killer gorillas which try kill the explorers. Finally, the explorers manage to escape, but a volcanic explosion destroys the lost city. The novel is written in such a way, that the reader is made to believe that this is a true story (through the use of a prologue, epilogue and foot notes). A film version of 'Congo' was also made.

In fact, the first page of the novel states that "the novel is fiction except for the parts that aren't". There are number of snippets in the book about various researches on genetics.

The nurse on duty in the emergency room assumed that it was a malfunction with the MRI machine. In Traub's fingers, veins and arteries would go into his fingers and then skip over to the left or right, not correctly lining up with one another.

The character of Amy was based on a real gorilla named 'Koko' who reportedly had a vocabulary of more than 1000 signs and words. 'Congo' is a work of fiction. But through the use of footnotes Crichton makes it appear as though the novel is based on facts. An interesting fact which Crichton reveals (on his website) is that he had never seen a gorilla in the wild at the time of writing the book. He had also not visited Congo to write the novel. He visited Rwanda and saw wild gorillas two years after writing 'Congo'. This is chronicled in his non-fiction work 'Travels'.

However, towards the end of the book, he manages to fit in with these men and to befriend some of them. The book is a fictionalized take on the actual account of the travels of Ahmad ibn Fadlan and based on his travel diaries that he kept. Crichton made his story more authentic by using actual historical fact interwoven with dramatic dialogue. In 1999, Crichton's book was the basis for the movie "The 13th Warrior" starring Antonio Banderas.

The hero has to finally kill his wife and destroy the entire facility of the company to stop the nano robots.
