Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Jurassic Park' John Hammond sets up InGen to clone dinosaurs. The discovery of DNA of an extinct animal inspires Hammond to try and clone dinosaurs; which was this extinct animal?

Answer: Quagga

The Quagga was a zebra-like African mammal which had become extinct in the 1880s. In 1985, a scientist had recovered DNA of the quagga from a piece of quagga hide. This inspired the venture capitalist John Hammond to clone dinosaurs by recovering their DNA.

An interesting trivia is that Crichton first wrote a draft story about the cloning of a pterodactyl in 1983, but this was criticized by all those who read it. In fact, he wrote as many as three drafts, all of which were hated by the people who read them. The reason was that he had written it from the view point of a kid. Finally, he decided to write it from the view point of an adult. Another interesting fact is that Universal Studios paid Crichton $2 million for the rights, even before the novel was published!
2. Who among the following characters is NOT featured in both 'Jurassic Park' and 'Lost World'?

Answer: John Hammond

John Hammond, the founder of InGen is killed by compys in 'Jurassic Park'. Lewis Dodgson, who hires Nedry in 'Jurrasic Park' to steal dinosaur embryos, appears again in 'Lost World', when he tries to steal dinosaur eggs. Ian Malcolm, the mathematician, appears in both the novels and is the central character in 'Lost World'. Marty Guitierrezz is a biologist in Costa Rica who appears in both the novels.

After the success of 'Jurassic Park', Crichton was not inclined to write a sequel, but he was pressurized by Steven Spielberg after which he decided to write 'Lost World'. Interestingly, the sequel starts with some quotations, one of which is by Ian Malcolm which says "Sequelae are inherently unpredictable"!
3. What happens to the lawyer Donald Gennaro in the novel 'Jurassic Park'?

Answer: He escapes from the island along with the others

Donald Gennaro, the lawyer, is one of the key characters responsible for funding Hammond to start 'Jurassic Park'. In the novel, he escapes from the island along with the others. But in the film, he is the first to be eaten by the T-rex. In the sequel 'Lost World', it is mentioned that he died of dysentery on a business trip. From the novel to the film, there are a number of changes.

A major change is that in the novel John Hammond dies, but in the film he survives and also appears in the sequel film 'Lost World: Jurassic Park'.
4. What is the name of the scientist who actually did the cloning of the dinosaurs and helped Hammond to create Jurassic Park?

Answer: Henry Wu

Henry Wu is the geneticist who is hired by Hammond and who heads the team which clones dinosaurs thus creating Jurassic Park. John Arnold is the chief engineer, Robert Muldoon the game warden and Ed Regis is in charge of public relations. Wu is shown as a very important character in the novel, but in the film he is relegated to a small role and is shown to have left the island before the dinosaur attacks take place.

In the novel, Wu is killed by raptors.
5. The hero of the novel 'Jurassic Park', Alan Grant, is a bearded redhead who loves children.

Answer: True

Alan Grant is described in the novel as being red-headed, having a beard and is also shown as being fond of children. But in the movie, he is clean shaven, fair haired and initially is shown as not very fond of children and tries to avoid Lex and Tim. However, later on in the movie he becomes fond of the kids after he saves them.
6. How do Grant and the kids escape from the attacking dactyls?

Answer: Lex throws her glove and the dactyls fly away with it

When Grant, Lex and Tim enter the aviary they are attacked by pterodactyls (cearadactyls actually!). As the dactyls attack Lex, she throws away her glove (a Darryl Stawberry special) and one of the dactyls grab the glove and flies away - the others follow.

This allows Grant and the kids to escape. The aviary scene is not featured in the movie. However the movie "Jurassic Park-III", features the aviary scene (the third part of the movie was not a creation of Crichton).
7. Why does Malcolm go to Isla Sorna in the novel 'The Lost World'?

Answer: To search for the paleontologist Richard Levine

A paleontologist Richard Levine had planned an expedition to the lost world. He gets lost in Isla Sorna (the lost world) after his guide is killed. Malcolm, Thorne and Eddie Carr decide to go to Isla Sorna to search for him. Sarah Harding also comes from Africa to the island to join the expedition.

There is a major change in the movie, where the character of Richard Levine is not featured. In the movie Malcolm goes to save Sarah Harding.
8. A key plot point of the novel 'Lost World' features a T-rex running amuck in the city of San Diego.

Answer: False

The T-rex running loose in San Diego is an important plot point in the movie 'Lost World : Jurassic Park'. This is however not a part of the novel. The novel ends in Isla Sorna. But the movie differs from the novel and it also features a different villain, Peter Ludlow who comes with a team of game hunters to capture live dinosaurs (whereas in the novel Dodgson plans to steal only the eggs).

The movie features a T-Rex which terrorizes the city of San Diego before Malcolm and Harding help to capture it.

In the movie series, the public is aware of the presence of dinosaurs on the islands, whereas in the novels, this is kept as a top secret.
9. One of the dinosaurs featured in 'The Lost World' is a chameleon-like dinosaur which has chromatophores which helps it to change colours and blend with the surroundings; what is the name of this dinosaur?

Answer: Carnotaurus

Carnotaurus sastrei is described as a dinosaur with chameleon-like abilities, that could change colours and blend with the surroundings. In the novel, this dinosaur kills the guide Diego at the start of the novel and in the end it attempts to kill Thorne, before he is rescued by Sarah and Levine. This dinosaur is not featured in the movie.
10. What happens to the dinosaurs at the end of the story in 'The Lost World'?

Answer: They are doomed to die

Malcolm discovers that the dinosaurs were infected by 'prions'. This happened because all the infant dinosaurs were fed with ground-up sheep meat. As Malcolm, Harding and team leave the island they realise that there were very few infants, because they were dying of the infection and that all dinosaurs on the island were doomed.

However the ending of the movie was different with the dinosaurs living happily and Hammond calling for their preservation. (The survival of the dinosaurs in the movie ensured that a third movie could be made).
