Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long did Hester have to stand on the scaffold?

Answer: Three hours

Hester Prynne was convicted of adultery, and forced to wear a red "A" on her dress for the rest of her life. After she was let out of prison, she had to stand on the scaffold for a period of three hours, enduring the glares of the townspeople.
2. What was the name of Hester's daughter?

Answer: Pearl

Pearl was the daughter of Hester and Reverend Dimmesdale. Hester had been married to a man named Prynne, who sent her ahead to Boston while he attended to some business in England. He was taken captive by Indians and came into Boston two years after Hester did. The day he entered the town was the day that Hester had to stand on the scaffold with her illegitimate child.
3. What alias did Hester's husband take?

Answer: Roger Chillingworth

Roger Chillingworth, who was indeed chilling, decided to devote his new life to finding out who Hester's lover was. He became the personal physician of Arthur Dimmesdale and spent his time trying to force the Reverend to confess.
4. What physical deformity did Hester's husband have?

Answer: One shoulder was higher than the other.

When Hester was standing on the scaffold, images of important people in her life flashed before her eyes. One of these images was that of a man with one shoulder higher than the other. When Roger Chillingworth entered the town, she immediately noticed that he had one shoulder higher than the other.
5. What was the name of the governor's sister?

Answer: Mistress Hibbins

This woman was supposedly a witch. When Hester went to the governor's mansion to drop off some gloves, Mistress Hibbins asked her if she would like to go into the forest that night to sign the "Black Man's" book.
6. Hester never revealed her husband's true identity to Dimmesdale.

Answer: False

After seven long years of agony, Dimmesdale finally heard the story from Hester. At first he was angry, but then came to forgive her.
7. Where did Dimmesdale frequently put his hand?

Answer: Over his heart

Dimmesdale was keeping his sin inside of him, and put his hand over his heart, to try to keep the secret in a symbolic gesture.
8. When did Dimmesdale confess?

Answer: Election day

After years of torture, Dimmesdale could not take it anymore. After he gave his Election day sermon, he walked up to the scaffold, where Hester stood seven years before, and summoned Hester and Pearl. He then told the people that this was his rightful place, and that he was a great sinner.
9. Did the graves of Hester and Dimmesdale touch?

Answer: No

After Hester died, she was buried next to Dimmesdale. The book makes it clear, however, that their graves were not touching, although they both shared one common headstone, with the letter "A".
10. The novel does not include the death of which character?

Answer: Pearl

In the conclusion it states that no one was really sure what happened to Pearl, but it was assumed that she was married and happy in England. Dimmesdale died after his confession, Chillingworth died a year later, and Hester died many years later.
