Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At what time did Young Goodman Brown leave town to go into the forest?

Answer: Sunset

It has been suggested that "sunset" was not only used as a time of day, but could be used as an allegory. "Sunset" could represent the boundary between good and evil.
2. What is Goodman Brown's wife's name?

Answer: Faith

This could also be allegorical, for at one point Goodman Brown cries, "My Faith is gone!" Goodman Brown is never the same after attending the meeting in the forest, and he never trusts anyone again.
3. When Goodman Brown met the man who led him to the meeting, what did he notice about the man's staff?

Answer: It looked like a black snake

The story says that the staff looked so much like a snake that Goodman Brown thought he could see it moving by itself.
4. How did Goodman Brown know Goody Cloyse?

Answer: She was his catechism teacher

Not only had she taught him his catechism as a child, but she had remained one of his spiritual advisors.
5. Did Cloyse recognize the old man traveling with Goodman Brown as Satan?

Answer: Yes

He touched her neck with the end of his staff, and she screamed, "The devil!" They began talking, and they did indeed know each other. The devil said, "Then goody Cloyse knows her old friend?", referring to himself. She replied, "Ah, forsooth, and is it your worship, indeed?"
6. In the forest on the way to the meeting, Goodman Brown encountered his pastor and a deacon from the church.

Answer: True

He was hiding along the path at the time, and it upset him because he could hear the travelers approaching. It upset him even more that the voices sounded like those of the minister and Deacon Gookin. He was surprised to find two "good" people on their way to the meeting.
7. On the way to the meeting, where did Goodman Brown find one of the pink ribbons from Faith's hair?

Answer: In a tree branch

At first he thought he heard her voice. When he started looking for her, he saw the ribbon hanging in the tree. This is when he realized his wife was also on her way to the meeting and he cried, "My Faith is gone!"
8. Goodman Brown did not recognize anyone who was at the meeting in the forest.

Answer: False

On the contrary, Goodman Brown recognized many people from his town. Some he expected to see there, while the presence of some of the others shocked him.
9. The next day, back in town, Goodman Brown went about his life just as if nothing had happened.

Answer: False

Goodman Brown's life was never the same. Instead of seeing people as he once knew them, he saw their "secret" ability to sin.
10. When Goodman Brown died, there was no epitaph written on his tombstone.

Answer: True

The last few lines of the story tell us this. The very last line says that "his dying hour was gloom". His life was miserable from the time he came out of the forest after attending the meeting.
