Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Mrs. Mary Farraline when she died?

Answer: On the train going to London

Mrs. Farraline, the elderly matriarch of a Scottish publishing family, was travelling by train from Edinburgh to London, England, to see her daughter. All nurse Hester Latterly had to do was to make sure that Mrs. Farraline took her medicine twice a day. When the train arrived in London, Hester discovered that Mrs. Farraline had died during the night.
2. Where did Hester Latterly go first after her arrival in London?

Answer: Lady Callandra Daviot's house

Hester took a hansom cab straight from the train station to the London house of her friend, Lady Callandra Daviot. Hester was badly shaken by the death of Mrs. Farraline, who she genuinely liked, and by having to break the news to Griselda Murdoch, Mrs. Farraline's pregnant daughter.
3. What did the police believe was Hester's motive for murdering Mary Farraline?

Answer: They thought Hester had stolen Mary's pearl and diamond brooch.

Hester had no idea how Mrs. Farraline's gray pearl and diamond brooch got into her bag. After the police discovered that Mrs. Farraline had died of an overdose of her heart medicine, the theft of the brooch seemed the perfect motive for murder.
4. What story did William Monk tell Mrs. Farraline's family to explain his presence in Edinburgh?

Answer: He was helping to build the murder case against Hester.

William Monk, an ex-policeman turned private investigator, had lost much of his memory in a carriage accident, but he still had his razor sharp wits. If anyone could help Hester, it was Monk. He knew the Farraline family would not help him if they knew he was working to prove that Hester was innocent. Instead, Monk told them that he was an investigator for the prosecution.
5. Was Hester defended at her murder trial in Edinburgh, Scotland, by her lawyer friend, Oliver Rathbone?

Answer: No

Hester's trial was held in Scotland, so her friend, English lawyer Oliver Rathbone, could not defend her in court. Lady Callandra Daviot hired Hester one of Scotland's finest defense lawyers, James Argyll.
6. Who was a character witness for Hester Latterly at her murder trial?

Answer: Miss Florence Nightingale

Hester had been one of Miss Florence Nightingale's nurses during the Crimean War. Although in frail health, Miss Nightingale travelled to Edinburgh and testified as a character witness for Hester.
7. What verdict did the jury bring back in the murder trial of Hester Latterly?

Answer: Not proven

The Edinburgh jury brought back a verdict of "not proven". Hester was freed, but she was not exonerated. She knew that people would never hire a nurse suspected of murdering her patient, so she remained in Edinburgh to help Monk find Mary's murderer.
8. Why was Deirdra Farraline, Mary Farraline's daughter-in-law, running through so much money?

Answer: She was working on a flying machine.

Deirdra Farraline was supposedly spending vast sums on herself, but Monk realized that Deirdra's clothes were used and altered to fit her. When he saw her sneaking out of the house at night, Monk followed her to a part of town far from the Farraline family's fashionable neighborhood.

He was very surprised to find her working on a flying machine. She was not the only lady sneaking out of the Farraline house at night and travelling to the slums. Monk followed Mary's daughter, Eilish Fyffe, and learned she was running a ragged school for adults.
9. What illegal activity was the Farraline family involved in?

Answer: Counterfeiting money

After a drunken Hector Farraline mentioned a secret room at the family's publishing company, Hester and Monk went on a late night search of the facility. They found the secret room and the source of the family's wealth. The Farralines were printing counterfeit money of extraordinary quality from several countries. Monk told Hester that this crime struck at the roots of society by killing trust. "We drown in a morass of the sham, the expedient. Deceit, corruption and betrayal.

They are the sins of the wolf.

The lowest circle of hell. The last pit of all. Dante. The three great circles of hell. The leopard, the lion and the wolf."
10. Which one of Mary Farraline's children inheirited nothing in her will?

Answer: Kenneth Farraline

Hester and Monk found many skeletons hidden in the closets of the Farraline family, and there were many possible motives for her murder. Mary had already paid back the money that Kenneth had embezzled from the family company and paid for jewelry that Kenneth had charged for his mistress, so she did not feel he was entitled to anything more in her will. Who murdered Mary Farraline, and what was the motive? In a very exciting climax, Hester and Monk solve one of his strangest cases. Thank you for taking my quiz on Anne Perry's "The Sins Of The Wolf".
