Major Burnaby lives in Sittaford. He is best friends with Captain Trevelyan, who is renting out his home, Sittaford House. It is snowing heavily as Major Burnaby arrives at Sittaford House.

Answer: The Willets

Apparently, the Willets are from South Africa. They like to invite the other residents of Sittaford around. Captain Trevelyan lives about six miles from Sittaford, in Exhampton.

Answer: Major Burnaby

The party, at Sittaford House, decide to entertain themselves with some table-turning. The spirits say that Captain Trevelyan has been murdered. Major Burnaby is concerned, and, even though it is snowing hard, he sets out to Exhampton.

Answer: Blow to the head

When there is no answer, when Major Burnaby gets to Hazelmoor - Captain Trevelyan's house - he goes to get the local constable and doctor. They find Captain Trevelyan dead. He seems to have died about 5:25 pm, just as the message from the spirits came.

Evans has recently married, much to Captain Trevelyan's displeasure. Trevelyan was not fond of woman.

Captain Trevelyan's nephew, Jim Pearson, who needs money, visited his uncle before he was killed. Jim Pearson is arrested - but his fiancée, Emily Trefusis, is determined to clear his name. She befriends Charles Enderby, and is willing for him to make lots of reports for his newspaper. Charles and Emily are staying in Sittaford.

A convict has escaped from about 12 miles away. It is a shame that he did not escape on the day Captain Trevelyan was killed.

Answer: Brian Pearson

Brian Pearson is Captain Trevelyan's youngest nephew; he is supposed to be in Australia. Emily asks Charles to keep watch at Sittaford House, while she is in Exhampton. Violet Willet goes to see someone in the dead of night. Sittaford House is near the moor.

There is a pair of boots missing from Captain Trevelyan's house. Emily goes to Hazelmoor to explore. She then returns to Sittaford.

Major Burnaby was in need of money. Captain Trevelyan was alive when the séance was taking place. Burnaby skied to Exhampton - he didn't walk - and then murdered his friend. Trevelyan liked entering competitions; he sometimes entered them under other names and addresses.

The cheque for £5, 000 was really Captain Trevelyan's. The escaped convict was Mr Willet. Brian Pearson is in love with Violet Willet, and helped to arrange the escape of Mr Willet. Emily is going to marry Jim Pearson.
