Michael Rogers hungers for the good things in life but does not really want to settle down and work for them. He is a "rolling stone" who flits from job to job, and from woman to woman. He states that he is not lazy, but restless. He longs to see the world and to have his friend, Santonix, build his dream house, ambitions made possible by his marriage to Ellie.

When Ellie and Michael first meet, she introduces herself as Fenella Goodman instead of Guteman in the hope that Michael won't realise she is one of the richest women in America. They marry after a whirlwind romance.

Answer: Rudolf Santonix

Santonix is a remarkably perceptive young architect. He builds very expensive houses and has a knack for knowing exactly the type of house which is ideal for each of his clients. He is also gravely ill. His dying words to Michael were to call Michael a damned fool. Gipsy's Acre is the last house he will ever build.

Mrs Lee disappears after Ellie's death. Subsequently, her body is found in a disused quarry - did she fall by accident or was she pushed? The sum of 300 pounds is found hidden under her floor-boards, indicating it was likely she was paid to scare Ellie away from "Gipsy's Acre".

Like Ellie, Claudia died after a fall from her horse whilst hunting. It is this "almost impossible coincidence" which causes people to question whether Ellie's death was really an accident - that, together with the fact that Claudia was picked up almost immediately after her fall and "there was still the smell of cyanide to go by".

Mr Lippincott describes Greta to Michael as "a wellborn girl with excellent references, half Swedish, half German". When Michael subsequently meets Greta, he describes her as very beautiful AND very handsome, "a Nordic type of blond with pure gold corn-coloured hair" and with "bright clear blue eyes". Greta and Ellie are extremely close.

Ellie's step-mother, Cora, was paid an income from the trust fund left by Ellie's grandfather. Andrew Lippincott advises Ellie to increase Cora's allowance, even though Ellie did not have any legal or moral obligation to do so. Major Phillpot's family has lived in the village of Kingston Bishop for generations. He provided Mrs Lee with a cottage to live in because she saved his brother from drowning when he was a child. The Major told the Rogers that Mrs Lee "fished him out of a pond when he'd gone through the ice". The Major and Michael are at an auction when Ellie goes missing.

Michael describes Andrew Lippincott as "an elderly man, dry and precise in appearance...long and lean with suave and courteous manners". Ellie calls him Uncle Andrew and describes him as "...not really an uncle. He's my principal guardian or trustee...". He's also Ellie's principal lawyer.

Answer: Stanford Lloyd

Stanford Lloyd is an American, described as a "florid banker, so full of bonhomie, so rich and carefree". Lloyd was in England on the day of Ellie's death and Michael wonders about the coincidence. Michael believes that Lloyd is "a crook" who has been "playing hanky-panky" with Ellie's bonds and investments so he signs a power of attorney and transfers control from Stanford Lloyd to Andrew Lippincott.
