Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Glittering Images": In the first novel in the series, the year is 1937. We open with Charles Ashworth, sent by the Archbishop of Canterbury to enquire into the somewhat curious personal life of the flamboyant Bishop of Starbridge. Who IS the Bishop of Starbridge?

Answer: Alex Jardine

Archbishop Lang is concerned about the unusual personal life of Bishop Jardine - his many close friendships with lovely titled ladies; his silly, incompetent wife; and his wife's very good looking, efficient companion, Lyle Christie. Ashworth is sent to spy out the land, and see if there are any skeletons in the episcopal closet.
Ashworth is smitten by Miss Christie, and is determined to woo her away from the Palace. Meanwhile, he finds himself behaving more and more erratically, as he learns more about the Bishop's past.
2. The Bishop is not the only one with secrets. Charles Ashworth suffers a breakdown, and finds himself drunk and in despair, knocking at the door of Grantchester Abbey in the middle of the night. Through counselling, Charles uncovers his own hidden past. What is Charles' secret?

Answer: The man who raised him is not his biological father

With the help of Jonathan Darrow, the Abbot of Grantchester, Charles examines his own past, and discovers the source of his difficult relationship with the man he had thought was his father.
3. "Glamorous Powers": In the second novel of the series, Jonathon Darrow, the psychic spiritual director from the first novel, thinks that he has received a call to leave the Monastic Order, and re-enter the world. His call came in the form of a vision - a lovely Christopher Wren chapel in the woods, with a suitcase by the door. Later Jon encounters these objects in the 'real' world. Which one does he see first, the suitcase or the chapel?

Answer: suitcase

Jon sees the suitcase by the desk of the hotel he is staying at, and at first thinks that he is receiving another 'showing', only to find that it does not disappear after a few seconds. The suitcase belongs to the mysterious "Miss Fielding", who is soon revealed to be Anne Barton-Woods, the owner of the chapel.
4. After his marriage to Miss Barton-Woods, Jon Darrow embarks on a career which his spiritual director, Father Darcy, had always warned him never to attempt. What is it?

Answer: Healer

Although Father Darcy had always warned Jon to beware of his 'glamorous powers', Jon dives head first into a healing ministry, scandalizing his more conservative parishioners, and thrilling the less level-headed. After a healing service in the chapel goes disastrously wrong, culminating in Anne's miscarriage, Jon is forced to admit that it was his own arrogance that led him astray.
5. Finally, his past reconciled, and his doubts and fears laid to rest, Jon is able to discern his true calling. At the end of "Glamorous Powers", which career do we see him following?

Answer: Teacher

Once Jon comes to terms with his memories of his father, he is able to answer the calling that was always there - to teach.
6. "Ultimate Prizes": It's the darkest period of the Second World War, and the Archdeacon of Starbridge, Neville Aysgarth, is living the perfect life - perfect wife, perfect children, perfect career. However, there is at least one aspect of his life that he prefers to keep a secret from most; he calls it his "hidden ministry". What is it?

Answer: Pastor to German P.O.W.s

Aysgarth is both unconfident of his pastoral skills, and reluctant to appear to be "soft on Germans", so he never speaks of his ministry at the P.O.W. camp.
7. At the funeral of his mentor, the former Bishop of Starbridge, Neville finally realizes the mess he has made of his life. What does he do after the funeral that brings home to him how far "off the rails" he has gone?

Answer: He has a drunken sexual encounter with Charles Ashworth's wife, Lyle

Neville realizes that his second marriage was indeed the horrid mistake that everyone had been telling him it would be, and "almost" commits adultery with Lyle Ashworth in the kitchen of Jardine's home, the night after the funeral.
8. "Scandalous Risks": This book takes us to the early sixties, and the time of the "New Morality". Venetia Flaxton is an unhappy upper-class young woman, looking for a focus for her life. Unfortunately, this focus becomes Neville Aysgarth, now Dean of Starbridge Cathedral. Venetia and her "Mr Dean" fall in love, and begin an unwise affair, which eventually becomes physical. It becomes very clear to us throughout the novel that Aysgarth is using his romance with Venetia to hide from the many problems in his life. Which of the following is NOT one of Aysgarth's problems at this time?

Answer: His addiction to prescription drugs

Aysgarth has fallen back into the same behaviour that turned out so disastrously in the forties - heavy drinking, a risky flirtation with a clever woman who writes wonderful letters, and, underneath it all, an inability to face reality. With Venetia, he tries to re-invent himself yet again, becoming "Neville Four". Inevitably, the whole house of cards comes crashing down.
9. Venetia comes to feel that her only way of escape from this disastrous affair is to marry someone else. Only then will Aysgarth let her go. Whom does Venetia marry?

Answer: Eddie Hoffenburg

On the advice of Lyle Ashworth, (by now Lyle's husband, Charles, is the Bishop of Starbridge) Venetia accepts Eddie's offer of marriage. This turns out to be a mistake, and they are very unhappy together. This is the first (and only) book in this series where the main character does not find healing through counselling, confession, and prayer. Venetia does not really come to terms with her demons until many years later, in the late 1980's.
10. "Absolute Truths": Charles Ashworth, by now Bishop of Starbridge, is devastated in this novel by his 'third catastrophe'. Which of the following is NOT one of his three catastrophes?

Answer: His drug addiction

The death of Lyle plunges Charles into the third major disaster of his life. He is forced to confront his failure to truly understand and support her, and to face up to the mess he has made of his relationships with his sons. Like his previous catastrophes, he emerges from this one, after much soul searching and despair, to a new and renewed faith, and a new sense of redemption.
11. Charles manages to repair his relationships with his sons, Charley and Michael, when they both appear at his Starbridge home following a crisis up in London. What had happened in London, to send both boys to seek sanctuary in Starbridge?

Answer: The suicide of Michael's girlfriend, Holly

Michael is in despair at his part in Holly's suicide - she slit her wrists after he brutally ended their relationship. Charley also is felled by guilt, as he had been the one to tell Holly of Michael's infidelity.
Charles is able to use this disaster to finally speak frankly to both young men - to tell Michael how much he envies his life as a young single man in 1965 swinging London, and to free Charley from his fear of turning out like his biological father, Bishop Jardine.
12. "Mystical Paths": This book focuses on the now grown sons of the men we met in the first three books of the series. Nick Darrow finds himself increasingly obsessed with one of these men. He sets himself to unearth the truth behind the man's death - was it suicide? Who is the man Nick Darrow is obsessed with?

Answer: Christian Aysgarth

Nick has found himself in a muddle over his relationship with his father. In his efforts to reconcile his own needs with his father's need for a 'replica', he is rapidly spiralling downwards in a mess of sex, lies, and misuse of his psychic powers.
He comes to see Christian Aysgarth's life as having a message for him - if Christian could have defied his father's plans for him, and gone on to lead a successful and happy life, perhaps such a thing is possible for Nick. If Christian is so unhappy that he committed suicide however ... Nick sets himself to find out the truth.
13. Nick finds out, with the help of Lewis Hall, that there was in fact no suicide, but that a murder has been committed. Where is the body?

Answer: In the coal-cellar at Perry Palmer's flat

Christian was in fact murdered by his friend, Perry Palmer. Perry buried him in the coal cellar, and then faked the boat trip and the freak wave that had supposedly swept Christian overboard.
14. When Nick and his father have been healed of their unhealthy "Siamese Twin" relationship, Nick is free to pursue the career that his father failed at so badly. What does Nick become?

Answer: Healer

By the end of the book we learn that Nick has started a healing ministry at St Benet's-by-the-Wall, a Guild church in the City of London. The next books in the series leave Starbridge, and focus on this ministry.
15. "The Wonder Worker": The novel opens with Alice Fletcher, a woman beset by feelings of unworthiness. How does she deal with these feelings?

Answer: She eats

Alice buries her feelings in tubs of rum-raisin ice cream. Whenever she feels stressed, she bakes a cake, and eats it.
16. Nick Darrow is facing problems in his marriage to Rosalind. What is the symbol of his feelings for her?

Answer: Teddy Bear

The Teddy, always dependable, always the same, has become for Nick the symbol of their marriage. He depends on Rosalind to always be there for him, never changing, never demanding.
However, just as Teddy is locked up in a box in the attic, so Rosalind feels locked up in her country home, only needed on weekends. She feels increasingly desperate to force Nick to notice her pain and loneliness, finally taking disastrous action.
17. "The High Flyer": Carter Graham, a powerhouse female lawyer in Thatcher's London, meets Kim Betz, a man with a somewhat clouded past. Despite obstruction from his first wife, they marry. An important figure in Kim's life is the mysterious Mrs. Mayfield. Who is this Mrs Mayfield?

Answer: A corrupt psychic healer and occult practitioner

Mrs Mayfield is a shady character, who, among her other activities, recruits members for an occult society. Carter holds her at least partly responsible for Kim's suicide.
18. At the turning point of "The High Flyer", an important confrontation takes place between all the major characters in Carter's high rise Barbican flat. What happens?

Answer: Kim Betz stabs Eric Tucker

Carter and Eric have gone to the flat in order to search for the manila envelope which Kim had taken from the country house after his wife's death. There, they are surprised by Kim and Mrs Mayfield, who have come for the same purpose. An ugly scene follows - at one point Mrs Mayfield orders Kim to hold a knife to Carter's throat. Nick and Lewis appear, and chaos soon follows. Eric is thrown onto the knife which Kim is holding, Kim goes into a catatonic state, and Mrs Mayfield, (along with the manila envelope) disappears.
19. "The Heartbreaker": Carter (now Carta) Graham from "The High Flyer" is back. She finds herself involved in a troubling relationship with a young man, Gavin Blake. What does he do?

Answer: He is a male prostitute

Gavin's pimp is none other than Mrs Mayfield, who was the cause of so much pain and destruction in "The High Flyer". In this book, we find out more about the occult society that Kim Betz had been a member of.
20. Gavin Blake manages to free himself from his soul-destroying profession, and eventually marries. Does he marry Carta?

Answer: No

Carta lays the last of her doubts to rest, and marries Eric Tucker, the novelist and her personal assistant from "The High Flyer". Gavin marries Susanne, a one-time fellow prostitute from Mrs Mayfield's stable.
