Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both series have a group of powerful, female magic-users. Who is a Sister of the Light in "The Sword of Truth" and NOT a member of the Aes Sedai in "The Wheel of Time"?

Answer: Verna Sauventreen

Verna Sauventreen is a member of the Sisters of the Light in "The Sword of Truth" and one of the three sisters sent to bring Richard Rahl back to the Palace of the Prophets. Verna is described as being an attractive women seemingly in her forties. Decades of exposure to the time-slowing spell placed on the Palace of the Prophets has her looking younger than her actual age of over 150. She is a skilled magic-user with a stubborn, though caring personality and over time becomes a strong ally of Richard Rahl.

Siuan Sanche, Moiraine Damodred, and Cadsuane Melaidhrin are all members of the Aes Sedai in "The Wheel of Time", an organization of female magic users. Siuan and Moraine are members of the Blue Ajah grouping, described as being focused on "causes" and Cadsuane is a member of the Green (or "battle") Ajah. As with all Aes Sedai, the effects of magic grant them an extended lifespan and slowed aging.
2. Both series feature significant structures that are major settings for one of more book in the series. Which location is found in the world of "The Wheel of Time" and NOT that of "The Sword of Truth"?

Answer: The White Tower

The White Tower is a key location in "The Wheel of Time". It is the headquarters of the Aes Sedai and includes dormitories, libraries, workshops, and storage. The tower is described as one of, if not the, tallest buildings in that world, standing several hundred feet tall. In "The Wheel of Time", the building is described as not being fully occupied since the number of Aes Sedai is less than it was in former times.

The other three places are all mentioned in "The Sword of Truth". The Palace of the Prophets, located on Halsband Island, is the headquarters of the Sisters of the Light, who have a mission in helping young male wizards control and access their abilities. The Wizard's Keep is the home of the First Wizard, and is found in the City of Aydindril, the capital of the Midlands. The Temple of the Winds (also the title of a book in the series) is located partially in the world of the living and partially in the underworld of dead souls.
3. Both series feature fantastical humanoid creatures whom our main characters encounter. Which type of being is found in "The Sword of Truth" and NOT in "The Wheel of Time"

Answer: Gar

Gars are creatures in "The Sword of Time" that are larger than humans and able to stand on two feet. The long-tailed gars such as Gratch have a level of intelligence and a limited ability to speak. Gars were originally created by wizards thousands of years ago as a way to fight another type of creature called a mriswith.

In "The Wheel of Time", Ogiers are a race of creatures larger than humans and with a somewhat "brutish" appearance who are in fact highly intelligent and peace loving. They typically live in magic-free areas called Steddings. Trollocs are roughly the same size as Ogiers but very different in personality, typically being cruel and destructive. Their appearance combines human and animal features. The Aelfinn are creatures of a different dimension who bear some resemblance to humanoid foxes. Their thinking and morality is often very confusing to those humans who encounter them.
4. Both series include a large number of books. Which book is part of "The Wheel of Time" series and not "The Sword of Truth" series?

Answer: Crossroads of Twilight

"Crossroads of Twilight" (2003) is the tenth book of "The Wheel of Time" series created by Robert Jordan (1948-2007). The time frame of the book overlaps with "Winter's Heart", the previous book in the series.

Terry Goodkind (1948-2020) was the author of "The Sword of Truth" series. "Stone of Tears" (1995), "Soul of the Fire" (1999), and "Faith of the Fallen" (2000) were respectively the second, fifth, and sixth books in that series. Many people have noted important similarities (as well as differences) between the two series, which they have attributed to various causes.
5. A group of characters in "The Wheel of Time" are known as the Forsaken. Which character is NOT one of the Forsaken, but instead is an important antagonist in "The Sword of Truth"?

Answer: Jagang

Jagang is the primary adversary of Richard Rahl in several of the later Sword of Truth" books as the head of the Imperial Order. He is a Dreamwalker (with the ability to read people's minds), though not a wizard. He is a short, though physically powerful, man and also highly intelligent. Interestingly, though they are the leaders of two opposing coalitions, Richard and Jagang have very few direct encounters.

The other three are part of the Forsaken, a group of powerful magic users who support the efforts of Shai'tan, the Dark One.
6. The worlds of "The Wheel of Time" and "The Sword of Truth" are each filled with a multitude of lands. Which land is found in "The Wheel of Time" and NOT "The Sword of Truth"?

Answer: Illian

Illian is a land in the southernmost part of the Westlands in "The Wheel of Time". A coastal land, its capital city (of the same name) has the largest port in the world. The people of Illian have some unique grammar when using the common tongue compared to the other countries of the Westlands.

Galea, Kelton, and Anderith are all lands found in the Midlands of the New World in "The Sword of Truth". Kahlen Amnell, the Mother Confessor, is offered the crowns of Galea and Kelton. Anderith is the primary setting of the fifth book in the series, "Soul of the Fire".
7. Both "The Sword of Truth" and "The Wheel of Time" have groups who serve evil rather than good. Who is a Sister of the Dark in "The Sword of Truth" and NOT a Darkfriend in "The Wheel of Time"?

Answer: Ulicia

Ullica is a Sister of the Dark (and on the surface a Sister of the Light) in "The Sword of Truth". In"The Stone of Tears", she is an administrator working for Prelate Annalina Aldurren. Later she and several other Sisters of the Dark fled from the Palace of the Prophets. Eventually they would find themselves associated with Emperor Jagang.

Darkfriends in "The Wheel of Time" where supporters of Shai'tan. They included channelers of magic as well as non-channelers. Sheriam Baynar was an Aes Sedai who was Mistress of Novices under one Amrylin and Keeper of the Chronicles under another. She was also a secret member of the Black Ajah. Liandrin, another Keeper of the Chroniclees, was also a member of the Black Ajah. Graendal was one of the Forsaken.
8. In the worlds of "The Sword of Truth" and "The Wheel of Time" are groups of people who are largely separate from human society. Which group can be found in "The Wheel of Time" and NOT "The Sword of Truth"

Answer: Aiel

The Aiel are a group of fierce warriors who live in the Waste or Three-Fold Land, a desert like area in "The Wheel of Time". They are proficient in the use of many weapons, although they generally do not use swords. To "Wetlanders" (other peoples), their customs often seem strange and the reverse is also true.

Several groups exist in the world of "The Sword of Truth". The Mud People are a tribal-level society whom Richard Rahl and Kahlen Amnell encounter in several books of the series. Richard first encounters the Baku Ban Mana in "Stone of Tears" when he travelling to the Palace of the Prophets. The Bandakar are a group of "Pristinely Ungifted" (magic has no impact on them) who have been isolated from other cultures for milennia.
9. Objects of unusual power can be found in both series of books. Which object is found in the world of "The Wheel of Time" and not that of "The Sword of Truth"?

Answer: Choedan Kal

The Choedan Kai are a pair of sa'angreal (magical items) in "The Wheel of Time". Created millenia ago during the Age of Legends, by the present time of the series, there were few magic channelers who were powerful enough to operate them.

The Boxes of Orden are said to allow the person who "puts them into play" (activates them) great power. The attempt of Darken Rahl to do so in "Wizard's First Rule" helps to drive the plot of that book. The Rada'han is used by a Sister of the Light to control and guide a young magic user in his training. The Dominie Dirtch are used by the nation of Anderith to protect their land. They project a powerful and destructive sonic energy.
10. Even more preternatural objects also appear in "The Sword of Truth" and "The Wheel of Time". Which object is from the world of "The Sword of Truth" and NOT that of "The Wheel of Time"?

Answer: Agiel

The Agiel is used by a Mord-Sith in "The Sword of Truth" to control and redirect the magical energy of a Wizard against him. Agiels are primarily used to inflict pain and are indiscriminate in that regard. The Agiel inflicts pain on the Mord-Sith and Wizard equally. Part of the training of the Mord-Sith creates a gradually immunity to pain.

The other choices are various ter'angreal from "The Wheel of Time". Accepted swear on the Oath Rod when they successfully pass their tests and become Aes Sedai. The Horn of Valere is used to summon the great warriors of the past. The Bowl of the Winds grants the user ability to control the weather.
