Sir Charles Cartwright is a retired actor. He is hosting a dinner party at Crow's Nest. Hercule Poirot will be attending it too. Cartwright's friends also include Sir Bartholomew Strange, the nerve specialist, and Mr Satterthwaite. Lady Mary Lytton Gore will also be attending, with her daughter, Hermione (better known as Egg).

He wanted to surprise his house party. Sir Bartholomew also knew that Sir Charles had been married in his youth and that his wife was in a lunatic asylum. Egg admits that she has always loved Oliver Manders.
