Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who does the man with the whispery voice come to 74 Culver Street to find?

Answer: Mrs. Lyons

When Mrs. Casey answers the door, she sees a man silhouetted in the the doorway. In a whispery voice, he asks for Mrs. Lyons. She sends him to the second floor, and as he disappears around the staircase, she hears him softly whistling "Three Blind Mice".
2. According to Scotland Yard, which one of the following statements about the murdered woman found at 74 Culvert Street is NOT true?

Answer: She had been stabbed several times in the chest.

We find out from Inspector Parminter and Detective Sergeant Kane of Scotland Yard that the woman found strangled at Culver Street was actually Maureen Gregg. She had just been released a couple of months earlier from Holloway. Pinned to her body was a piece of paper with the words "This is the first", a drawing of three mice, and a bar of music from the tune "Three Blind Mice".
3. Which one of these items belonging to the killer did the workmen give to the police?

Answer: A small notebook

Two workmen stopped a heavily bundled-up man and asked him for a match near Culver Street. When he gave them the match, he accidentally dropped a small notebook. The man hurried away before they could give it back to him. Written inside were the words "Three Blind Mice" and "74 Culver Street; Monkswell Manor".

After the murder at 74 Culver Street, the workmen took the notebook to Scotand Yard.
4. What was the name of the guest house owned by Giles and Molly Davis?

Answer: Monkswell Manor

Housing was scarce after the WW! Molly had inheirted the rambling country house from her Aunt Katherine. The house was in good repair and furnished with good, solid Victorian furniture. Molly and her husband, Giles, decided to open a guest house.
5. True or False: Giles and Molly did not ask for references from their guests before renting rooms to them.

Answer: True

They never thought to ask any of their guests for references before renting them a room. As Mr. Paravicini told Molly, "It is advisable always to know a little about the people who sleep under your roof."
6. Who was the first guest to arrive at the guest house?

Answer: Christopher Wren

A young man calling himself Christopher Wren was the first to arrive at Monkswell Manor. He tells Giles and Molly that he was named after the famous architect. The beauty of the story is that very few of the guests actually are who they say they are.
7. Which of the guests arrived at the guest house in the middle of the night after overturning their car?

Answer: Mr. Paravicini

Mr. Paravicini shows up in the middle of the night without any luggage. He tells Giles that his car overturned in a snowbank.
8. After the guests all arrive, Sgt. Trotter shows up at the guest house. He tells them a murderer is in their midst. What does he say that the three mice in the nursery rhyme "Three Blind Mice" represents to the killer?

Answer: Three foster children abused by a farmer and his wife during WWII

"Three Blind Mice. See how they run. See how they run. They all ran after the farmer's wife. She cut off their tails with a carving knife. Did you ever see such a sight in your life As Three Blind Mice."
Sgt. Trotter tells them, that to the killer, the three blind mice in the nursery rhyme represents three neglected, abused children that were placed with a farmer and his wife, the Greggs, during the War. One of the children, a little boy, died. Now the killer is out to revenge the "three blind mice".
9. Which best describes the situation at the guest house?

Answer: They were snowbound and the telephone lines were cut.

It was bad enough that a blizzard had all the guests stranded at Monkswell Manor, but the telephone lines had been cut, too! As for the other choices, even I do not have such an avid imagination! Each of these plots were used with delightful results by Dame Agatha Christie herself in the following mysteries: "Then There Were None" (also published as "Ten Little Niggers" and "Ten Little Indians"), and the Hercule Poirot and Mrs. Oliver mysteries "Cards On The Table and "Halloween Party".
10. How was Mrs. Boyles murdered?

Answer: She was strangled with a tie from a raincoat.

Mrs. Boyles was a very bossy, fault-finding kind of lady--not nice at all. She had also been the billeting officer that had sent the three children to live at Longridge Farm in 1940.
11. True or false: Both Molly and Giles suspect each other of being in London on the day of the Culver Street murder.

Answer: True

Giles finds a bus ticket in Molly's glove, and the Sergeant shows Molly a copy of a London newspaper dated Feb. 19th, the day of the Culver Street Murder. Each begins to suspect the other. How are you coming on solving the mystery? Stepped in any mousetraps, yet?
12. How long did Molly and Giles know each other before they were married?

Answer: Fortnight (two weeks)

Molly and Giles meet during the War. Life seemed different then--more urgent. They married two weeks after they meet. Each starts to find out just how little they actually know about the other.
13. What is it that goes missing that belonged to Sergeant Trotter?

Answer: Skis

Trotter's skis were missing from the closet under the staircase where Giles put them.
14. How does the killer get Molly alone?

Answer: Asks her to play the "Three Blind Mice" on the piano.

The killer asks Molly to count to fifty and then play the tune "The Blind Mice" on the piano. This was to get her alone. The killer thinks that Molly was the teacher that one of Longridge Farm children wrote to, begging for help. I have given you all the clues, so do you know who the killer is? If not, then rest assured that Dame Agatha left me guessing to the very last, too! I am not going to reveal the killer here. If you have read "Three Blind Mice" then you already know. If you haven't read it, revealing the ending would be a crime. Please read it and see if you can solve Christie's masterpiece of suspense. Just watch out for her carefully laid mousetrap.
15. True or False: The world's longest running play in modern theatre history, "The Mousetrap" was based on the story "Three Blind Mice".

Answer: True

Yes, the play "The Mousetrap" holds the record as being the longest-running play in the history of modern theatre, running since its opening on Nov. 25, 1952! The book I read that contained the novella "Three Blind Mice" is entitled "Three Blind Mice and Other Stories" (1950). It was also published as "The Mousetrap".
