Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which school does Rod attend?

Answer: Patrick Henry High

Rod is taking the Advanced Survival course in High School even though he could graduate without it as it is technically a College course.
He wants to work for the Colonial Service, leading expeditions of settlers to new planets as they are opened up for colonisation.
2. If he had arrived without a certain piece of equipment Rod would have been failed before he even set off for the test. Which piece was it?

Answer: "Baby Bunting" survival suit

Rod is in two minds but takes along his suit anyway. He plans that he can always dump it if it is unnecessary, even though he would be sorry to lose it.
When he arrives and checks in, Deacon Matson says he will mail it home for Rod as he won't need it, except that he would have failed had he not brought it.
3. What warning is written at the end of the instruction sheet handed to Rod as he begins his test?

Answer: Watch out for Stobor

The students eventually decide that the "dopey Joe's" are Stobor, but when Rod finally gets to ask Deacon Matson he tells him that there are actually no such things. The warning was to personalise the general danger and get them to watch out for 'everything' in the hopes they would come back alive.
4. One of the students takes his guard dog with him on the survival assignment. What is the dog's name?

Answer: Thor

The dog is trained to answer only to Johann Braun, his owner, but early on during the assignment Rod sees the bodies of both Johann and Thor; they have been murdered by a fellow student.
5. Caroline Mshiyeni leaves something behind between the two gates en route to the test area. What is it?

Answer: Suitcase

Caroline arrives to take the test dressed in casual clothes and carrying a suitcase.
Rod is the next to go, after her, and he sees the empty case left behind between the gates.
6. Rod's instructions say the recall gate will be not more than 20 kilometers in which direction?

Answer: Towards the sunrise

It takes quite a while for the students to realise the recall isn't going to happen.
For several weeks Rod is convinced the group is actually somewhere on Earth, but Jackie makes him look at the night sky. It is the different constellations that make it "real" just how far from home they actually are.
7. What do the group name the town they establish?

Answer: Cowper Town

They name their settlement Cowper Town to honour Grant after he dies from injuries sustained in the battle against the dopey Joes.
8. Who are the parents of Hope, the first baby born to the group?

Answer: Bob and Carmen

Bob Baxter and Carmen Garcia are the first couple to marry among the group. They were already engaged and planning to finish their medical studies and have careers as "outlander" medical missionaries.
Baby Hope is followed by Jimmy and Jackie's son Grant.
9. The "gates" that transport people instantly from place to place are named after the scientist who developed them. What is his name?

Answer: Ramsbotham

Dr. Jesse Evelyn Ramsbotham was originally trying to build a time machine, but ended up perfecting the "gate" technology that gave Mankind the stars.
10. Who is Rod's sister, who comes to persuade him to come home once contact with Earth is re-established?

Answer: Helen

Helen was an officer in the elite Amazons womens corps and is a survival expert herself.
While Rod has been "lost" she has resigned her commission and married Deacon Matson.
