Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who's Stephanie's FTA at the start of the novel?

Answer: Kenny Mancuso

The scenario was set such as Kenny had shot his good friend Moogey Bues in the knee. He'd failed to appear after he bonded out, so Stephanie went to recover him. It became clear early on that there was more to Kenny and Moogey than an accidental shooting, when Joe Morelli revealed he was looking for Kenny as well.

He initially told Stephanie that he was related to Kenny and had agreed to look for him on behalf of family. Moogey was murdered shortly after the book began, and so naturally, the plot thickened.
2. Spiro Stiva hired Stephanie to locate stolen caskets for him.

Answer: True

When Stephanie and Grandma Mazur went to a viewing, Spiro inquired about hiring Stephanie. The next viewing the pair went to see was Moogey, whose closed casket (he had three shots into the face) irritated Grandma. It was at that time that Spiro revealed it was stolen caskets he needed recovered.

He offered her $1000 just to locate them, and explained that getting them back was his problem. She was a little taken aback at first, but the $1000 inspired her to try. They'd been locked in a storage facility and taken without incident.

He swore the key never left his possession, and there was no apparent tampering at the facility. Joe once again appeared in her investigation, and revealed that Kenny, Moogey and Spiro had been close pals in school.

The caskets were the cheapest line to buy, and Spiro had bought them in bulk. This all left Steph wondering in the back of her mind... what did he need them for?
3. After Stephanie's Jeep was stolen, who loaned her a car to drive by way of a 1953 powder blue Buick?

Answer: Grandma Mazur

Stephanie decided to hit the funeral viewing circuit in Trenton in order to ascertain if other parlors were suspect in the disappearance of Spiro's caskets. When her grandmother heard her say that, being an adventure hound, she immediately volunteered herself to hit that beat with Stephanie.

It was outside of one of these viewings that Steph lost her Jeep. Grandma Mazur had inherited the Buick from Uncle Sandor, who'd gone into a retirement home at age 84 and gave his car to his only living sister. Grandma herself didn't know how to drive, and was only too happy to let a reluctant Stephanie use it.
4. It was Kenny who found Stephanie. What ghoulish offering did he leave for her in her jacket pocket?

Answer: a finger

Kenny had sawed it off of one of Spiro's bodies in the funeral home. Before she was accosted by Kenny in Macy's shoe department, Stephanie had come to discover that the man (at the funeral home) had a wax finger in place of his missing one. Kenny got away from Steph at Macy's, but called her when she got home to alert her to the finger.

She immediately freaked and called Joe. They decided to leave the finger in her possession until she could return it to Spiro the next day. When Spiro refused to put it back inside the old man's coffin, she threatened to cause a scene at the funeral.

He finally agreed to do it after all the mourners had departed. Interestingly enough, Spiro did not seem at all surprised or worried at Kenny's mutilation of a corpse. Come to find out, Kenny had a history of the kind of ritualistic torture that's made many a serial killer famous.
5. Who did Kenny Mancuso stab with an ice pick?

Answer: Grandma Mazur

After sending Stephanie a man's appendage in the mail, he called at her apartment to torment her some more. She kept her cool during the call, but was shaken by his threats, especially the threats on her grandmother. Grandma Mazur was Stephanie's biggest fan and fully supported her new role as bounty hunter. The next day, Grandma was out with her senile friend Clara when Kenny came up to her and stuck her with the ice pick. When Stephanie found out, she decided to moved back home for a few days. Kenny did attack his buddy Spiro, but it was an attempt to cut off the man's hand. Spiro received quite a few stitches, but was saved by a tacky gold bracelet.

Grandma Mazur was so into Stephanie's exciting new career that she teamed up with her as often as possible. She even bought her own jeans, flannel shirt and Doc Martens. That is my kind of lady!
6. Stephanie has a sister named Valerie.

Answer: True

Steph described her as the "normal sister". Valerie had been married for "about a hundred years" and had two children. Stephanie's mom was forever comparing Steph to her cousin Christine, and then she added Valerie into the mix. Mrs. Plum wanted Stephanie to have a safe, normal job, as she worried about her.

Her mom also seemed very interested in getting Stephanie re-married. I guess after the Dickie Orr experience, Steph was in no rush to repeat that venture. Despite years of angst about Joe Morelli, Mrs. Plum had also warmed to the idea of Joe and her daughter as a couple, not that they were one.
7. When Kenny decided to ram his Suburban into the Buick, did Grandma Mazur (Edna) get out and shoot at him?

Answer: Yes

After several hours of a boring stakeout, Kenny finally surfaced. Just as Stephanie was about to follow his vehicle, he'd u-turned to attack their car. He hit it several times and Grandma had had enough. She pulled a long barrel .45 out of her bag, got out of the Buick and shot at Kenny.

She didn't hit him, but he high-tailed it out of there while Grandma sat on her butt from the gun's recoil. Yes, EVERYONE in this book possessed a gun! Stephanie, Lula, Grandma (loaned to her by Elsie), Spiro, Kenny, Joe, and so forth and so on. Lula was the prostitute in the first novel who'd been hurt to make a point to Stephanie.

It was that awful boxer, Ramirez, that had hurt her. She reappeared in book two to become Vinnie's file clerk. She'd retired after the mutilation she'd suffered.
8. Who stuffed Grandma into a body freezer?

Answer: Kenny

At Joe Loosey's service, Kenny kidnapped Grandma while Steph waited outside. He hid her in a body freezer, the pull out tray kind, and forgot to turn it down. So, while inside, Grandma didn't start to freeze. When Kenny opened the tray to show her to Stephanie, Grandma pulled out her .45 and recited some vintage Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry before she fired off some rounds in the basement of the funeral home. Stephanie managed to get the two of them outside of the building after the bullets caused some kind of explosion.
9. Who is Rex?

Answer: Steph's pet hamster

Rex was already two years old, so his life was coming near an end. I am not sure Stephanie knew this, but she took good care of him. She cleaned his cage regularly and shared wonderful food tidbits with him all of the time. She and Rex stayed at the Plum house during the Kenny Mancuso hunt.

In book one, she thought she'd lost Rex when she came home to find a cat locked inside his cage with him. Fortunately, he had a soup can to hide inside. He'd been traumatized briefly and bit Stephanie, but quickly returned to his normal self.
10. Who declared war at the end of the book?

Answer: Stephanie

Steph had been outraged when she found out that Joe Morelli had her bugged. She found out just as she was getting ready to re-consummate their relationship. She had been so angry she tossed him, bare bodied, out of the car. She only let him have his gun for protection.

When Joe came to her place at the end of the book to fill her in on the details, he insinuated that they continue on with the sexcapades and relieve years of sexual tension. She declined, and declared war. Joe happily excepted the challenge of war, claiming he did war well.

As of the end of the novel, the funeral home had burned down, Spiro was missing in action and Kenny had been locked up without bail.
