Poor Loretta had robbed a liquor store because she needed a Tom Collins! She told Stephanie she'd been on her period at the time, and therefore not thinking clearly. She wasn't willing to be taken into custody, because her son Mario would need a ride home from school that afternoon.

She made Stephanie promise to take care of Mario in case she couldn't bond out immediately. That turned out to be just the case, as Loretta was worth nothing financially and had burned the last person who put up her bail.

She and Stephanie had been in school together and Loretta had quit early to give birth to Mario. At the start of this tale, no one knew who Mario's father could be.

Mario claimed to be Zook and wouldn't answer to any other names. He explained that he ruled an online gaming world called "Minionfire". Stephanie described him as being behind the curve when it came to blossoming into manhood, opposite what had happened to his cousin Joe Morelli. Dreg, Jinx, and Murk were some of Glory's minions during season five of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

Brenda was described much in the same vein as Cher, a real life celebrity known by one name. She was a high maintenance diva, around sixty years old, and in town for a three day stint of charity work.

Zook had Grandma Mazur planning to defeat a griefer by the time Steph came to collect him for school. Later, Grandma and her old lady friends sat around playing 'Minionfire" together at her house. In a hilarious scene, Grandma exclaimed that she'd been "ganked" in the game. That's our Edna, never short of hip lingo and enthusiasm.

Gary The Stalker was also Brenda's very own cousin! He'd been hit by lightning a while back and believed he could see the future. She had a restraining order against him, but Gary followed Brenda around anyway. He believed she was in danger and was continuously trying to warn her people to protect her.

When he met Steph, he more or less attached himself to her and continued to relay his psychic predictions about Brenda on to her. It wasn't clear if he was crazy or clairvoyant until he predicted to Zook some "Minionfire" exploits before they occurred in the game.

Steph went in search of Dom while his sister Loretta sat in jail. Stephanie was hoping that Dom could care for Zook while Loretta waited to be bailed out. What she found instead was an angry man who felt that Joe Morelli had stolen Aunt Rose's house out from under him. Dom and three cohorts had robbed a bank ten years earlier, and the stash vanished.

After Dom's release not only was he hoping to find the nine million, but so was the rest of his gang. This caused his sister Loretta to be kidnapped immediately after she was out of jail, Joe's house to become the scene of a treasure hunt, and Stephanie to be dyed blue!

After she found Allen Gratelli dead in Joe's basement, the trio tracked down the place where he'd lived. When they arrived, they found his siblings arguing about the money. They'd been searching for clues to its whereabouts, just like Steph and company had been hoping to do. Lula suggested that they check around the corner of Morelli's house for Allen's car.

They found it with a locked briefcase inside it. So, Lula popped open the lock and Steph opened the case. Blue dye exploded out and onto all three women! The dye was very permanent and the ladies remained blue for quite a while.

She'd been on Dom watch for four hours with no activity at Jelly's place whatsoever. She called Joe to check in on the progress in his basement, and then decided she would just pop in and quickly use Jelly's bathroom. She knew the place was open, she'd already been inside. Just as she was getting ready to squat down she heard a sizzle and a "boom".

She was just able to get into the bedroom, shut its door and hop out of a window before the entire unit was engulfed in flames. Just two pages earlier I had started to wonder where Stephanie's explosion was for book fourteen. And, while it is usually a vehicle that she has explode, I wasn't surprised it was Jelly's apartment.

She has experienced and/or caused a few interior fires over the fourteen books.

Someone was trying to force Joe into handing over the nine million dollars. While Gary The Stalker, Zook and Moon Man watched over Morelli's house, the brick came in through the window. While Steph was leery of it being a bomb, she and Lula eventually opened it and discovered a note and a pinky toe.

The toenail was painted red and the note claimed it belonged to Zook's mom Loretta. Steph placed it in Joe's freezer for safe keeping and then went out to do some checking on another accomplice of Dom's, a man named Stanley Zero.

In her first attempt to find the nine million bucks, Grandma Mazur snuck into Joe's backyard in the wee hours of the morning. She began digging the yard up, which awoke Joe. Later, she organized an illegal exhumation with her old lady friends and was the only one the cops could catch.

They didn't arrest her, to avoid embarrassment for them, but allowed her to go to Joe's and have Steph drive her home.

Steph and Lula waited for Slick to get the lock opened, and then they eased themselves into the apartment on Route 1. I expected something big here, as Gary The Stalker had been predicting a flying pizza would get Brenda as she sat on a toilet on Route 1. I believed his predictions were a Stephanie/Brenda combination he couldn't ascertain, since he had been stalking both women. Steph had already experienced an exploding home from a bomb sent flying into Jelly Kantner's apartment, just as she was to sit on a toilet. But, here the only thing that happened at this moment was the women discovering Zero's body.

He'd been shot in the head just like his cohort Allen Gratelli had been. Stephanie visited his ex-wife afterward to try and discern who the fourth partner may be.

She'd recognized the man's voice when she hid out in Jelly's place on her first visit. The voice was vaguely familiar to her, but she couldn't quite put her finger on the memory...

It appeared as though Susan would be an easy FTA recovery. But Brenda, not listening to any warnings, opened a bathroom door which released a very intense and hyper pet monkey. The animal ended up atop Brenda's head, leaving some of itself behind. Lula was not interested in returning for Susan later, but decided to tag along and "protect" Stephanie anyway.

As soon as she dialed the phone number he gave her, the mysterious fourth partner informed her he knew the van was full of phony money. He gave her until noon to make the exchange without police interference or else Loretta's hand was coming off next. Stephanie spoke to her wire, and told the listeners they had someone on the inside working for the fourth partner.

Steve had planted a camera on top of Morelli's elderly neighbors' house. When Stephanie spotted it, he was one of the cops who came in to take it down. She recognized his voice and shoes. She called Dom, who collected the keys from her to the van and storage unit.

A grand chase ensued, and Mooner's potato cannon caused the van to run into a deli and explode. Steve and the money went up in flames. Not all of the cash was burned, and Mooner made off with thousands. Steve had been working security at the bank ten years earlier when the heist had taken place.

Dom claimed he'd seen Loretta and Joe having sex in the garage all those years ago. At the end, Loretta corrected Dom. She said Mario's father was Lenny Garvis. Lenny died the very next day, by choking on a peanut butter sandwich. It was some chick named Jenny that Dom saw with Joe in the garage. Loretta said that Mario (Zook) always knew the truth, but she'd never told anyone else. It also turned out that none of Loretta's body parts had been amputated at all.

Another wonderful installment of Stephanie and friends, but there needed to be more Ranger!
