Jonas hears of a Lithuanian man who struck it rich in America, and, after the failure of Ona's familiy's farm, he suggests that the family travel to America.

Jokubas runs a financial failure of a delicatessen. He is the man who allegedly "made a fortune" in America. He becomes a friend of the family.
