Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Cherry Orchard

Answer: Anton Chekhov

'The Cherry Orchard' was Chekhov's last play. He described it as a comedy with elements of farce, but Konstantin Stanislavski, the first director, treated it as a tragedy.
2. The Crucible

Answer: Arthur Miller

This powerful play is about the witch hunts in Salem in the U.S.A. Some young girls claimed to see local women in the company of the devil, and the suspects are terribly tortured and executed.
3. The Real Inspector Hound

Answer: Tom Stoppard

This play is absurd but clever. It concerns two critics, Moon and Birdboot, who go to review a terrible country house mystery play, and somehow get mixed up in the action.
4. Our Town

Answer: Thornton Wilder

This Pulitzer prize winning play tells the story of a fictional small town, Grover's Corners, between 1901 and 1913 through the lives of its citizens.
5. Hamlet

6. Major Barbara

Answer: George Bernard Shaw

Major Barbara is a young idealistic member of the Salvation Army. Her estranged father reappears in her life, and is now a rich and successful arms manufacturer. Major Barbara is shocked when the Salvation Army accepts 'tainted' money from him and has to decide whether the good this does is more powerful than the munitions he sells.
7. The Rivals

Answer: Richard Brinsley Sheridan

This was Sheridan's first play; he was driven to write it to raise some money for himself and his new wife. A feature of this play is Mrs. Malaprop, whose name has become a word to describe the incorrect use of a word that sounds similar to the correct one.
8. The Duchess of Malfi

Answer: John Webster

This play is loosely based on events in the life of Giovanna d'Aragona, the Duchess of Malfi between 1504 and 1510. The recently widowed Duchess falls in love with Antonio, a lowly steward. Her brothers forbid the marriage, so she and Antonio elope.
9. Miss Julie

Answer: August Strindberg

Miss Julie is the daughter of a Count, who has been brought up to think like a man. She is a troubled person, at one moment imperious and the next flirting with the man servant. It is a complicated play, exploring their conflicting feelings about each other.
10. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Answer: Tennessee Williams

This play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. It is set on a plantation which is the home of a wealthy cotton farmer. The play examines the relationships between members of his family, especially that of Brick, his son, and Brick's wife Maggie, the Cat.
