Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Introduction, what is NOT one of the names that the Zombie War goes by?

Answer: The Evil Menace

It has also been referred to as "World War Z" "Z War One" and "The Zombie War".
2. What was the official name of the remote village in China where Kwang Jing-shu saw his first outbreak?

Answer: It had no official name

The villagers former home, Old Dachang, was torn down and rebuilt as a tourist museum.
3. Which of the following is NOT an ingredient in "peacetime root beer"?

Answer: sassafras from Japan

The recipe was framed above the desk of Arthur Sinclair, Junior. During the war, he was the director of the U.S. government's DeStRes.
4. What does DeStRes stand for?

Answer: Department of Strategic Resources

This department was started in order to aid American citizens in getting back on their feet and back to work.
5. How did Sensei Tomonaga Ijiro become blind?

Answer: He was looking toward Nagasaki, Japan when the bomb dropped.

Surviving Japanese victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings are referred to as "hibakusha" and are considered unclean by many and have faced much discrimination due to the misconception that radiation sickness is hereditary or contagious.
6. Who is Max Brooks' famous father?

Answer: Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks is a multi-award winning director, writer, composer, lyricist, actor, comedian and producer. Some of his best films are:

"Spaceballs", "Robin Hood: Men in Tights", "Dracula: Dead and Lovin' It" and "High Anxiety".

Max is his only child with actress Anne Bancroft whom he was married to until she died in 2005.
7. What is the common American military term for the zombies?

Answer: Zack

I don't believe the book ever says why exactly they started calling the enemy, Zack. One can probably assume that it is because it also starts with Z, as zombie does, and the U.S. military's habit of naming their enemies, as in "Charlie" during the Vietnam War.
8. Phalanx, though advertised as a vaccine against the Walking Plague, would actually only prevent diphtheria.

Answer: False

Phalanx would protect against rabies. When the first outbreaks started, the governments of the world were telling people it was a weird strain of jungle rabies.
9. According to Michael Choi, who really lost the Zombie War?

Answer: Whales

Between bombs exploding in and over water and millions of survivors taking to the sea to live, the whales didn't stand a chance.
10. What is the term applied to survivors who became so warped, psychologically, that they behaved like zombies, even though they weren't actually infected?

Answer: Quislings

Quislings are people whose minds have broken down and they behave like zombies, attacking people by biting them as well as moaning. Ironically, real zombies can still tell the difference and will attack quislings even though they don't attack other zombies.

The main ways that military personnel were able to distinguish quislings from real zombies was by heat-detecting equipment and also by watching their eyes. Real zombies don't blink.
