Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. True or False: According to "Zombie Survival Guide", zombies are after human brains and this is all they will eat.

Answer: False

Zombies are not interested in brains. They will eat human flesh but the reason for this is unknown because their entire digestive system is inert. Like the rest of the zombie, their stomachs and intestinal tracts are also dead. Zombies have been found with over 50 pounds of rotting human flesh in their guts, completely undigested.

The most plausible reason for their hunger for human tissue is to further spread the virus. A bite or scratch from a zombie is an instant death sentence for the victim.
2. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", which of these will zombies target and eat?

Answer: Humans only

Zombies are only attracted to living human beings. They will ignore one another, animals, and corpses. The virus that infects them is only viable in human beings and cannot be passed to other species in the animal kingdom.
3. True or false: According to "Zombie Survival Guide", zombies are re-animated corpses that either rose from their graves or crawled out of tombs.

Answer: False

Zombies are re-animated corpses, but not in the traditional sense. A zombie is created by infecting another living human being. Once infected, the poor soul develops a terrible fever and dies within a time frame ranging from a few hours to a few days depending on their health and stature at the time of the infection.

After the fever finally kills the victim, the body dies but the brain becomes re-animated after an unknown/variable period of time and the body, although dead, rises and begins to walk the earth once more in search of human flesh. An already dead body cannot be re-animated by the virus.
4. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", which of these best describes how zombies pursue their prey?

Answer: Tirelessly shuffling after their prey

Zombies cannot run at all. They can only shuffle toward their intended victim at something resembling a normal walking speed. However, they never grow tired and will relentlessly pursue a target. The slow turtle wins the race!

Zombies also do not possess any more strength than their former human form had.
5. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", which of the following are zombies NOT capable of doing?

Answer: Climbing ladders

Zombies possess absolutely zero intelligence, and cannot figure out how to climb a ladder. If you were to place a ladder on the side of a building and climb to the roof leaving the ladder in place, you'd be safe (until thirst/hunger/exposure sets in). Technically, zombies cannot even climb stairs but considering the fact they never cease pursuing a human target once identified, they are capable of eventually crawling their way up the stairs.

Zombies require no oxygen, so they can amble about underwater... tirelessly searching for human prey. Their lungs will fill with water causing them to sink to the bottom of a body of water. There, they will "walk" about.

Although zombies are incapable of speech and are otherwise silent, once one spots a living human it begins to moan. This moaning sound is instantly heard by other zombies in the area and they will follow the moaning sound ... to the victim.
6. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the only way to dispatch (kill) a zombie?

Answer: Damage or destroy the brain

The only way to dispatch (the word "kill" is inappropriate because they're already dead!) a zombie is to severely damage or destroy the brain. This is quite a difficult feat to accomplish because the human skull is an amazingly strong structure which evolved over millions of years to do one thing ... protect the brain!

It should be noted that even a severed zombie head is still capable of biting. The brain must be destroyed!
7. OK... you're doing very well! Now that you've proven how well you understand the threat, now the quiz moves to survival. How well will you do provided that you've survived the initial outbreak? According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the first thing you must do after the dead have begun to walk the earth?

Answer: Remain calm, as paralyzing fear or panic means death

It is absolutely vital to remain calm and collected after the outbreak. Members of your family might be infected and trying to get to you. There will be an unbearable stench coming from everywhere humans once thrived. It will be hell on earth ... but if you cannot keep a logically functioning mind, you will not survive. Your brain is the most powerful weapon and survival tool ever designed. You can do this ... you've just got to stay cool.
8. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the best possible means of transportation in order to flee an infected area?

Answer: A good all-terrain bicycle

With a decent mountain bike, you can easily out-pedal the zombies, weave your way through the worst of traffic jams, and even carry it on your back if need be. It is also nearly silent, requires no fuel, and can to be found almost everywhere.

A horse, while a good choice, requires a lot of grazing time and water. They are also instinctively terrified by the sight and smell of the unquiet dead and will panic at once in the presence of a ghoul and flee, throwing you off.

Trucks, SUV's, motorcycles, tanks, and four-wheelers all require gasoline. It will only be a matter of hours after an infestation before that pseudo-precious commodity will be impossible to find. Gas stations will be littered with corpses ... not of dispatched zombies but of survivors shot by other questing for the same fuel.
9. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the best place to find temporary shelter and get some rest while escaping from zombies?

Answer: A rowboat - zombies cannot swim

Zombies cannot swim. If you can find a means of anchoring a boat in water about ten feet deep, even in a swimming pool, you are completely safe and can sleep like a baby, immune to the threat.

It is ludicrous to think zombies have any notion of holy ground. Grocery stores would be dangerous because of looters and violent gangs of survivors. Schools usually have lots of windows which zombies are capable of breaking, but the limited number of exits can actually be a bonus.
10. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the best possible firearm you could choose to defend yourself with?

Answer: A .22 caliber rifle or pistol

By far the best possible firearm you could acquire is the lowly .22. How's this? Think of it ... the tiny bullet flies very fast, over 1300 feet per second in most cases, easily capable of piercing the forehead of a zombie and damaging the brain. Not to mention the fact that the super-high velocity bullet (although small) tends to ricochet about inside the skull, further scrambling the brain.

The bullets are tiny, plentiful, and readily found almost everywhere. You can literally carry thousands of them about your person without weighing yourself down.
11. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the best possible hand-to-hand weapon you can possibly use to defend yourself against a zombie?

Answer: A trench spike

By far, the best weapon for hand-to-hand combat ever devised is the trench spike. Developed by the Germans during WWI, it was designed to pierce the helmets of British soldiers in the close hand-to-hand combat in the tight quarters of trench warfare. One cannot possibly hold a more lethal weapon than a trench spike, and if you've got one in your hand ... you will win. The seven-inch spike was carefully designed as it's the optimal length of blade to fully penetrate the brain from any angle. Plus, it can be easily made in most simple garage workshops.

Good luck finding a Samurai sword. And even if you were lucky enough to find one, they are not suitable for use in tight areas like hallways. Many people are not strong enough to wield a sledgehammer effectively and they too suffer in tight areas.

A chainsaw would indeed be a terrible weapon to wield, if they didn't require the use of gasoline and if the roaring engine didn't attract every zombie within earshot. Not to mention the spraying, splattering blood that would be associated with trying to destroy a zombie with a chainsaw. One drop of infected blood in your eyes and ...
12. In the event of a global zombie apocalypse, in which the entire planet is infected and there are only a handful of survivors left (you among them), which is the best direction to head in order to survive for the long term, according to "Zombie Survival Guide"? Assume you are starting in the northern hemisphere.

Answer: North, to the Arctic circle - food is scarce but so are people and potential zombies

Without a doubt, the best place to go would be the arctic. Zombies do not rot and "last" for many, many years (bacteria will not live in an infected corpse - the virus kills them too.) Although food is scarce, the cold weather has an immense advantage to living humans.

As we are alive, so too does warm blood courses through our bodies keeping us alive. Zombies will freeze solid and become immobile because they are dead with no inner warmth. If the temperature is below freezing all the time outside, you are completely safe from the hordes. Of course, those of you in the southern hemisphere would be best off heading south to Antarctica.
13. True or false: According to "Zombie Survival Guide", the virus that re-animates the dead is not only limited to humans. Survivors like yourself must also be on the lookout for zombie dogs, cats, squirrels, etc. It's a trans-species outbreak and a living nightmare.

Answer: False

The virus that afflicts people and causes them to turn into zombies is solely limited to human beings. All other forms of life (including bacteria) will keep away from an infected unquiet corpse. Vultures will never feed on a dispatched zombie, and the body of a dispatched ghoul will lie where it fell unhindered by decomposition for many years until it finally erodes away from the effects of wind and rain.
14. According to "Zombie Survival Guide", what is the best possible food to stock up on if you happen upon a store that hasn't already been looted?

Answer: Cans of "Dinty Moore" style beef stew

While the other choices are definitely good items to grab if you can, given the choices the best would be the canned beef stew because it offers the widest range of nutritional value. It contains meat, potatoes, vegetables, and fats which provide a lot of energy.
15. True or false: According to "Zombie Survival Guide", it is a good idea to build a fire every night because it provides warmth, a psychological sense of security (i.e. helps to keep the Bogey Man away), and (most importantly) zombies are instinctively afraid of fire and keep away from it.

Answer: False

The last thing you would want to do is start a fire. Contrary to popular belief, zombies have no emotion and do not fear fire. They will detect the smoke plume from miles away and instantly be attracted toward the source. Zombies have an uncanny ability to detect anything "out of the norm" and possible clues to human activity.

Unfortunately, a comforting campfire would attract zombies and the peace and comfort found by a warm fire would quickly be shattered by a moaning ghoul shuffling toward you out of the darkness ... the light of the flickering flames glistening in its lifeless eyes.
