After successfully razing the Indian village, the Rangers have a long arduous march to a rendezvous with the British. Starving and decimated by attacks from the French, only the sheer will of Major Rogers keeps his remaining men going. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Northwest Passage

"Northwest Passage" was actually sub titled "Book I - Rogers' Rangers" - the plan was to have this as the first film of a series. Production problems doomed the movie series so as it turns out there is no search for the 'Northwest Passage'. Central Idaho near the town McCall and Payette Lake were the locations for filming.
2. (1940) Cole Harden (Gary Cooper), a drifter accused of horse stealing, faces the hanging Judge Roy Bean (Walter Brennan). Bean, who is obsessed with stage star Lily Langtry, postpones the hanging when Harden convinces him that he knows Langtry. Harden then sides with homesteaders who Bean is trying to get rid of. When Bean travels to a nearby town to see Langtry, there is a showdown and Bean is mortally wounded. What is the name of this movie?

Custer fights on the northern side during the Civil War and ultimately becomes a legend with his stand at the Little Big Horn against Chief Crazy Horse (Anthony Quinn) and the rest of the Sioux nation. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: They Died With Their Boots On

This film is full of historical inaccuracies but it is entertaining and was one of the top-grossing films for 1941, earning over $2.5 million. The pairing of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland happened in eight films; this was their final movie together. Two stuntmen were killed during filming.
4. (1943) Gil Carter (Henry Fonda) and Art Croft (Harry Morgan) join a posse to track down the killer of a local rancher. They find three men who have cattle and a pistol that were the property of the rancher. The majority of the posse votes to hang the men over the objections of seven, including Carter and Croft. He becomes a friend of Doc Holliday (Victor Mature) and an enemy of the Clantons. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: My Darling Clementine

Once again, this film is not historically accurate, but still a good movie. This was the first movie for Fonda after serving in the US Navy for two years. This movie was the first for John Agar. He and Shirley Temple, who also appears in the film, were married at the time this movie was filmed; they divorced in 1949. Ward Bond and Victor McLaglen give great performances as crusty Army Sergeants. The Fort Apache set was later used for the TV series "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin".

This film was the first of Director John Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy".
7. (1948) Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart), Bob Curtin (Tim Holt) and an old prospector named Howard (Walter Huston) team up to prospect for gold in the mountains of Mexico. The three men agree to split whatever they find evenly. Distrust, paranoia and greed turn good fortune into disaster. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

8. (1948) Thomas Dunson (John Wayne), along with his friend Nadine Groot (Walter Brennan) and his adopted son Matthew Garth (Montgomery Clift), set out from Dunsons' ranch in Texas. Dunson vows to kill Matt when he catches him. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Red River

"Red River" was released in 1948 but it was actually filmed in 1946 - the two year delay was due in part to a legal challenge by Howard Hughes that it was too similar to his film "The Outlaw". The film marked the first film role for Montgomery Clift. In 2008, the American Film Institute ranked "Red River" as the #5 All Time Western.
9. (1948) James "Stretch" Dawson (Gregory Peck) and his gang rob a bank and escape into the desert. Near death from dehydration, they enter a ghost town occupied by an old prospector and his granddaughter (Anne Baxter). Dawson falls in love with the girl and a showdown ensues between him and a member of his gang called "Dude" (Richard Widmark). What is the name of this movie?

Answer: Yellow Sky

Lone Pine, California was the location for the ghost town set, and some of the exterior filming was done at the Death Valley National Monument. Anne Baxter was the granddaughter of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. "Yellow Sky" was based on a novel by W.R. Burnett. Burnett wrote numerous western and gangster novels and screenplays.
10. (1949) Capt. Nathan Cutting Brittles (John Wayne), who is six days away from mandatory retirement, leads one last cavalry patrol. Included in the troop are his head scout Sgt. Tyree (Ben Johnson ) and First Sgt. Quincannon (Victor McLaglen). His mission is to escort his commanding officer's niece (Joanne Dru) and wife to a stagecoach heading east and figure out a way to get the Indians back on the reservation and avert an Indian war. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

This film was the second of Director John Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy" and the only one filmed in color. Near Kanab, Utah in Monument Valley, the Headquarters and Capt. Brittles' quarters from the film are still standing and open to the public. With a budget of $1.6 million, this was one of the most expensive westerns of the time, it was also one of the most popular. Monument Valley never looked better, and Winton Hoch won the Oscar for Best Color Cinematography.
