Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was the highest grossing film of 2015 and it was the third film all-time to reach $2 billion. Taking place about 30 years after "The Return of the Jedi", what organization has replaced the Empire as the main enemy of the Resistance?

Answer: First Order

Similar to the Empire in the original trilogy, the First Order seeks to create chaos in the "Star Wars" universe. A small group of warriors within the First Order are led by Kylo Ren and they are able to control the dark side of the force as Sith lords had previously done.

In addition to the new villainous organization "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" also introduced new heroes named Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron.
2. The fourth film in the "Jurassic Park" series, "Jurassic World" was released in 2015 and it was the second-highest grossing film of the year. Interestingly, only one actor from any of the previous films in the series reappeared in the same role. What is the name of this actor, who played the role of geneticist Henry Wu and who had previously played opposite Brad Pitt in the film "Seven Years in Tibet"?

Answer: B. D. Wong

In "Jurassic World" Dr. Wu was the mastermind behind the creation of the dinosaurs that inhabit the theme park known as Jurassic World. Similar to the previous films in the series, "Jurassic World" took place on the fictional island of Isla Nublar. The film takes place 22 years after the first film in the series, "Jurassic Park", and as can be expected, some of the dinosaurs escape and cause havoc.

In addition to the aforementioned movies, B. D. Wong has also played the character of Hugo Strange on the television show "Gotham" and may be best known for appearing on "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" as Dr. George Huang for more than 200 episodes.
3. There is a saying that there's nothing new in Hollywood and the highest grossing films of 2015 seem to indicate that is true. Which film, the seventh in its series, grossed more than $1.5 billion, featured several high-speed car chases, and starred Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson?

Answer: Furious 7

"Furious 7" was the seventh film in the "Fast and the Furious" series and it marked the final film appearance of Paul Walker. The popular actor died in late 2013 in a car accident when the filming of the movie was about half complete. After this tragic incident the film was delayed as a new script was adopted and some scenes in the movie actually utilized Paul Walker's brothers Caleb and Cody. Jason Statham plays the part of Deckard Shaw who is the main villain in the movie as he tries to take down Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel) crew after they had seriously injured his brother. Over the course of the film Shaw aligns himself with a mercenary named Mose Jakande to obtain a surveillance program and eliminate the group led by Dominic but they are unsuccessful.
4. A new entry in the "Avengers" series came out in 2015 and it was the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year. The film introduced the villain Ultron who was an advanced, artificial intelligence in robotic form that ended up turning on humanity. What actor, known for his Emmy winning performances on "The Practice" and "Boston Legal", voiced the character of Ultron?

Answer: James Spader

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" was the second film in the series after "The Avengers" in 2012. Both films were written and directed by Joss Whedon and featured the characters of Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Captain America (Chris Evans) among others. Similar to many superhero movies the good guys are able to subdue the enemy (Ultron) and there is a cliffhanger ending indicating that a new villain will surely rise.

The voice of Ultron, James Spader, was born in Massachusetts in 1960 and in 2013 he took on the role of criminal mastermind turned FBI informant Raymond Reddington in "The Blacklist".
5. The fifth-highest grossing movie of 2015 was the first non-Disney animated film to have a worldwide gross of over $1 billion. Serving as a spin-off to the "Despicable Me" franchise, what is the name of this film, whose main characters are small, yellow creatures named Kevin, Stuart, and Bob?

Answer: Minions

Impressively, the director of "Minions", Pierre Coffin, also voiced the three main characters who communicate through odd noises that sometimes resemble the English language. The film also featured the voice talents of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, and Michael Keaton.

The title characters of the film are shown to serve 'despicable' masters and the main action of the movie takes place in England where the minions, assisted by a young Gru who is the protagonist of "Despicable Me", are able to thwart a plot to steal Queen Elizabeth II's crown.
6. "Spectre" was the fourth film in the "James Bond" movie series to star Daniel Craig and it was the sixth-highest grossing film of 2015. The movie begins in Mexico City where James Bond stops a terrorist threat to detonate a bomb in a populous area. During what popular holiday celebration that runs from October 31 to November 2, in which people dress up in outrageous costumes, does this scene take place?

Answer: Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos in Spanish) is a popular cultural holiday in Mexico that honors loved ones that have died. During the festivities people wear costumes and masks, oftentimes displaying skeletons and other objects associated with death.

In "Spectre" all of the commotion caused by the Day of the Dead makes it difficult for James Bond to stop the terrorists but he is able to do so (as he typically does). During the struggle Bond obtains a ring that leads him to the evil Spectre crime ring.

The organization is led by Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) and villains from previous Bond movies starring Daniel Craig like Le Chiffre, Dominic Greene and Raoul Silva are revealed to have been working for Spectre as well.
7. A collaboration between Disney and Pixar called "Inside Out" was the seventh-highest grossing film of 2015. The film followed the life of Riley Andersen and, in particular, certain emotions that triggered her behavior. Which of the following was NOT one of the five emotions featured in the movie?

Answer: Pity

In addition to joy, sadness, and anger, fear and disgust rounded out the five emotions personified in the film. Much of the film takes place within Riley's brain where the emotions work together to try and control Riley's behavior. The primary emotion in the beginning of the movie is joy but over the course of the movie sadness (leaving friends behind) and anger (adjusting to a new school) also play prominent roles as Riley has to deal with moving and the challenges of teenage life.
8. "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" was the eighth-highest grossing film of 2015 and it starred Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. Over the course of the film Ethan Hunt is being tracked down by the CIA after the agency he works for has been shut down. What is the name of Hunt's organization, that successfully thwarts the evil Syndicate and is restored by the end of the film?

Answer: I.M.F.

The Impossible Missions Force (IMF) is disbanded after a Senate committee finds the organization's tactics destructive and illegal. Unknown to most in the intelligence community, the Syndicate actually had the approval of the British Prime Minister. "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" was the fifth film in the series to star Tom Cruise and the second to gross more than $600 million worldwide.
9. Surprisingly, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2", the fourth and final film in the "Hunger Games" franchise, has the lowest worldwide gross of any movie in the series but it was the ninth-highest grossing film of 2015. Throughout much of the series Katniss Everdeen is torn between her love and sense of duty to both Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne. In the end she decides to stay with Peeta and they have two children together.

Answer: True

Throughout the series Katniss and Gale have a close friendship but after the Hunger Games that she participated in with Peeta she has a special bond with him. In the final film Katniss learns that Gale helped develop bombs that killed innocent children, including her sister Prim. Upon learning of the deceit and actual plans of the resistance movement, Katniss shoots an arrow and kills its President, Alma Coin, when it was expected that she would kill the President of the Capitol, Coriolanus Snow.

The final scene of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" takes place years after the Capitol bombing and it shows Katniss and Peeta playing with their children as they have seemingly moved on from the nightmare of their involvement in the Hunger Games.
10. My favorite film of 2015 was "The Martian" and it was the 10th highest-grossing film of the year. Sharing its name with a militaristic Greek god, what was the name of the manned Mars mission that Mark Watney was a member of and from which he was separated after a violent storm?

Answer: Ares III

The Ares III mission was intended to be 31 Martian solar days (sols) but on sol 18 a dust storm injured Watney and the other crew members thought that he had died. So to save themselves they abandoned the mission to return back to Earth. Eventually Watney heals himself and he is able to grow food and communicate with NASA on Earth.

In total he is on Mars more than 500 sols before his crew is able to return to retrieve him after a dangerous space fly-by rescue.
