Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Clint Howard (brother of director Ron Howard) has made quite a few cameos in quite a few movies over the years. In this flick, he witnesses Satan's child, played by Adam Sandler, who appears on Earth after his dad decides to rule in hell for another 10,000 years. Patricia Arquette was also in this film as Valerie.

Answer: Little Nicky

"Dogma" did not star Adam Sandler and in the other two movies, Adam was not the son of Satan. This movie is a decent comedy and has quite a few talking animals.
2. This is a Martin Scorsese film starring Ving Rhames, John Goodman, and Nicolas Cage. This movie takes place in New York City during the wee hours of the morning. Nicolas Cage, who works the graveyard shift, has not taken good care of himself and has let the stresses of life overwhelm him. He goes through what might be considered life-changing experiences to most people, but still does not seemed changed by the movie's end. He does, however, meet Patricia Arquette.

Answer: Bringing Out the Dead

Nicolas Cage is the driver of a N.Y.C. emergency ambulance. He has become somewhat desensitized by everything he has seen in this line of work, but then all of a sudden, everything seems to catch up with him. His patients are dying; his health is fading, and he begins to see ghosts. He is looking for redemption but finds something else: Patricia Arquette plays John Goodman's daughter in this movie.
3. John Goodman plays an obsessed police officer that is convinced that a banker, played by Gary Shandling, is an alien. No one believes him and he loses his job, his wife, and his respect. However, it turns out he was right. Gary Shandling meets Annette Benning at an AA meeting and ends up falling in love with her.

Answer: What Planet Are You From?

Gary Shandling's character was from a race of all men. They were almost like Vulcans in "Star Trek", as they had no emotions, but were not quite as intellectual. His mission was to impregnate a human female. He thought cheesy pick up lines would get his mission accomplished in his first attempt, but found out that women can be much more complicated than that.
I made up two of the other choices but Kim Basinger did star in "My Stepmother is an Alien".
4. Annette Benning and her child are victimized in their nightmares by a twisted soul, played by Robert Downey Jr. Robert had traumatic things occur to him as a child. What is the name of this movie?

Answer: In Dreams

Throughout the whole movie, the time sequences went from the past to the present and then back to the past again. Sometimes it was hard to tell which scene was a memory and which was a nightmare. Robert Downey Jr., as a child, had been the sole survivor of a town that was flooded.

He had the ability to affect and enter other people's dreams and would impress his nightmare into the heads of others.
5. Robert Downey Jr. starred in this movie, whose title, at one time, could have also been the name of his biography. This also stars James Spader, Andrew McCarthy and Jamie Gertz.

Answer: Less Than Zero

James Spader plays a drug dealer that used to deal drugs to both Andrew McCarthy and Robert Downey Jr. Andrew McCarthy went away to college for a semester and on his return was clean and sober. Robert Downey Jr., who was now dating McCarthy's ex, is still heavily into the party scene and ends up paying a hefty price.

He was very much in a sense, "Less Than Zero." This theme has paralleled the actor's real life as well.
6. Jamie Gertz's part in this movie as a fiancée of a recently hired weatherman. They go to the midwestern part of the United States in order to get his wife, played by Helen Hunt, to sign divorce papers. They did not know what kind of "storm" they were in for.

Answer: Twister

Bill Paxton stars as a soon-to-be weatherman (he had not started this new job yet). He had been a storm chaser with a team that included his soon to be ex-wife. There were two huge weather cells meeting over the Midwest spawning a record number of tornadoes that day.

The storm chasers were attempting to place a tracking device called "Dorothy" into a tornado so they could be studied further. Bill cannot resist joining them, as it was he who created "Dorothy". They ran into quite a few tornadoes, which ended up being a bit too much for Jamie Gertz.

After a particularly scary encounter, she states, "When you used to tell me that you chased tornadoes, I always assumed it was a metaphor."
7. Helen Hunt starred in this 1992 movie as the wife of a man, played by Eric Stoltz, who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. The director of this movie is paralyzed in real life.

Answer: The Waterdance

This film won the Best Film Award at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival. The romance and chemistry between Helen Hunt and Eric Stoltz was well crafted as it came across as intimate rather than sappy. The director of this film is Neal Jimenez, who has stated that this was basically his story.
8. Eric Stoltz played a drug dealer from the valley, California, and was married to Rosanna Arquette. He sold some heroin to John Travolta who ended up coming back over, later that night, with an overdosing Uma Thurman.

Answer: Pulp Fiction

There were several storylines in this movie that all intermeshed in one way or another. In this one, John Travolta played a hit man that was on a date with his boss's wife, played by Uma Thurman. She had borrowed his coat and found the heroin in his coat pocket. She mistook it for cocaine and snorted it. A few minutes later, Travolta finds her passed out and bleeding from the nose.
9. Rosanna Arquette (Roberta Glass) was an unhappy housewife that was always reading the personal ads. She became fixated on a particular woman that posted every day and started living vicariously through her. One day, this woman posted a meeting place to meet a man that turned out to be Aidan Quinn (Dez). He thinks she is the person from the ads and a big case of mistaken identity occurs. What movie is this?

Answer: Desperately Seeking Susan

The woman who Roberta pretended to be was named Susan, thus explaining the title of the movie. Susan was played by Madonna, still in the midst of her "boy toy" phase. Also appearing in this 1985 movie were Mark Blum (Gary Glass) and Laurie Metcalf (Leslie Glass).
10. Aidan Quinn plays a private investigator attempting to track down a murderer. Two unusual sisters are his suspects and he ends up falling for the one played by Sandra Bullock.

Answer: Practical Magic

Sandra Bullock is the more practical sister and the one that Aidan Quinn falls for. The other sister is Nicole Kidman who was more of a wild child. The one thing that they had in common is that they were both witches and were both responsible for the murder of an abusive boyfriend of Nicole's. They bury him in the backyard but when they accidentally free his soul in a séance of sorts, the murder investigation takes a back seat to the antics of the malevolent and possessive spirit.
11. Sandra Bullock's role in this movie did not last long as she was kidnapped early on. Kiefer Sutherland, her husband at the time, devotes the whole movie searching for her. Do you remember the name of this movie?

Answer: The Vanishing

The kidnapper was Jeff Bridges. Jeff played a very disturbed individual that was leading a double life. One personality was a father and husband in what appeared to be a family behind a white picket fence. However, his other personality enjoyed kidnapping people.
12. Kiefer Sutherland was a voice on a telephone for the majority of this movie and the person who he was talking to was Colin Farrell. It was not your everyday phone call... in fact, it was a case of life or death! Katie Holmes also appeared in this movie as Pamela McFadden.

Answer: Phone Booth

This movie was released in 2002 and could have been called "The shoe is on the other foot." Colin Farrell was an agent with flexible morals and answered a public pay phone that ended up being Kiefer Sutherland, a sniper, who was out to rid the world of criminals: one phone booth at a time. It is an interesting movie with some good twists to its plot.
13. Katie Holmes is a student in a class taught by Michael Douglas and comes onto him in a pretty obvious way. Michael Douglas has written a great novel but cannot seem to write the next one. He has a laissez-faire attitude about life and ends up making poor decisions such as having an affair with Frances McDormand, a married chancellor at the very school where he teaches. Everything tends to fall apart for him one particular weekend.

Answer: Wonder Boys

This was Curtis Hanson's follow up to "L.A.Confidential". His weekend consisted of events such as putting the chancellor's dead dog in his trunk, meeting Tobey Maguire and driving a vehicle that might have been stolen, as well as having his editor set definitive deadlines for his book's completion.
In the end though, the weekend did him a world of good as he learns to take charge of his own life, accept responsibility and be accountable.
14. Frances McDormand was in this Coen Brothers movie where a couple that could not have kids, steal one. The antics that occur after that go from the sublime to the ridiculous. In an ironic twist, Holly Hunter, who plays a policewoman, is the one that steals the child.

Answer: Raising Arizona

This is still one of my all-time favorite comedies. In a very early role, Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter decide to steal one of Nathan Arizona's kids (played by T.J.Kuhn, Jr.), whose wife had quintuplets. Frances McDormand plays a character named Dot, a friend of the family. I remember from this line in the movie..."Now you take that diaper off your head and you put it back on your sister!"
15. Holly Hunter loses her partner, who had been a daredevil firefighter, and sparks up a new romance a year later with Brad Johnson II, her husband's friend. They form a friendship, which leads to a romantic bond. The problem was that her partner, played by Richard Dreyfuss, was not ready to "let go" yet and watched every second of every day, as a ghost.

Answer: Always

This has been a common theme amongst movies, where the departed soul is not ready to leave Earth and hangs around. Other examples are "What Dreams May Come", "Ghost", and "The Sixth Sense." It goes to prove that you still have an influence even after you pass on, in the movies anyhow.
16. This was a made-for-TV movie starring Richard Dreyfuss and George Clooney, which took place during the height of the United States and Soviet Union's Cold War.

Answer: Fail Safe

A U.S. bomber is accidentally instructed to drop a nuclear warhead on Moscow and the President, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Richard has to make a horrific choice at the end of this movie. George Clooney is Col. Jack Grady of Command Pilot Group 6. This was a television remake of the original version from 1964.
17. George Clooney provides the voice for his cartoon-acting counterpart in this film. By the way, Minnie Driver also provides a voice in this movie, as well.

Answer: South Park - Bigger, Longer and Uncut

This film, released in 1999 by Trey Parker and Matt Stone has everything from the television show, including foul language. Otherwise, the amount of political incorrectness is about the same. George Clooney is the voice of the doctor who was trying to revive Kenny, but accidentally replaced his heart with a baked potato. Minnie Driver was the voice of Brooke Shields who was a guest on "The Conan O'Brian show".

The Canadian actor, Phillip, slapped her after she attempted a dumb joke.
18. Minnie Driver plays the girlfriend of Matt Damon, who not only acts in this movie, but also wrote the screenplay with Ben Affleck. Robin Williams also stars in this movie.

Answer: Good Will Hunting

Matt Damon's character is a janitor at M.I.T. in Boston but has an intelligence quotient of a mathematician. He is used to the rugged lifestyle of Boston and being with his friends, chiefly Ben Affleck. Minnie Driver, a Harvard student, falls in love with him, but it is unrequited as Matt Damon has too many personal issues to work out.

He has to choose between his current lifestyle and the possible fame and career that his intelligence could bring him.
19. In this film, Robin Williams is obsessed with killing a man dressed up in a rhinoceros costume. Danny DeVito also tries to kill him in this movie.

Answer: Death to Smoochy

The man in the rhinoceros costume is Ed Norton who plays "Smoochy" (a.k.a. Sheldon Mopes), the lovable character that took the place of "Rainbow Randolph", played by Robin Williams. It was a kid's show but "Rainbow Randolph" was extorting money from parents to have their kids get better seats. Randolph is attempting to find ways to discredit, embarrass, and finally kill "Smoochy". Edward Norton's agent is Danny DeVito, who also is attempting to con him and attempts to kill him also.
20. Both Danny DeVito and Clint Howard have cameos in this Mike Myers flick.

Answer: Austin Powers in Goldmember

Both Danny DeVito and Clint Howard have cameos in this Mike Myers flick.
The entire "Austin Powers" trilogy is famous for celebrity cameo bit parts. Clint Howard plays a Lieutenant in the Army, who is in charge of radar tracking (he spots a satellite being pulled towards Earth by Dr. Evil's new toy called "Preparation H" after Preparations A-G failed). Danny DeVito played Mini-Me in the film within a film, "Austinpussy".
