A Date at the 'Diner' Trivia Quiz

While wandering through the corridors of this massive site, I couldn't help but notice that one of my all-time favorite movies wasn't in here. 'Diner' was released in 1982, and included a star studded ensemble. Enjoy!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the setting of the film?

Answer: Baltimore, Maryland Christmas Night 1959

Set in the 1950's, the soundtrack is a collection of great music within itself. Though the movie takes place during the Christmas week, it is still one that can be enjoyed all year round.
2. How much, in dollars, did Timothy Fenwick Jr. charge David Frazer to have his date for the night?

Answer: five

Bobby "Boogie" finds Fenwick in the basement of the dance hall breaking windows. After discouraging him from doing so, Boogie asks where his date is.
Fenwick: "David Frazer said she was death. I said you like the way she looks, take her."
Boogie: "What are you? The Salvation Army?"
Fenwick: "I charged him five bucks."
3. While working days at the beauty parlor, Boogie is taking a night school course in Physics.

Answer: False

I hope you chose false. Boogie mentions his night school course in Law at least three times throughout the movie. Bobby is quick to think on his feet and a very believable liar. These are good traits for a lawyer, are they not?
4. Which of the following actors portrays the role of Modell?

Answer: Paul Reiser

The ever-questioning, somewhat timid Modell is superbly portrayed by Paul Reiser. Reiser is likely best known for his lead role in the sitcom, 'Mad About You' with Helen Hunt. Mickey Rourke is the cool headed Boogie, Kevin Bacon is the prankster Fenwick, and Daniel Stern is Shrevie, the first out of the friends to make it to the altar.

The other cast member to have gone on to appear on television was Tim Daly (Billy) from 'Wings'.
5. Which popular singer of the era does Eddie declare to be "The Lord"?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

'Which do you prefer? Mathis or Sinatra?'. This is the question Eddie harasses just about everybody with who walks into the diner, including the group. Shrevie and Modell give him a hard time in giving an answer, but when Boogie is asked he replies 'Presley'. Jerry Lee Lewis' hit, 'Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On' is just one of the many great songs featured on the film's soundtrack.
6. We find out a little into the film that Boogie is in debt for a rather large sum. How much money does he owe?

Answer: $2000

It's strange how gambling on a sport's event can be deemed as a worthy debt but this would be the case for Boogie being in debt. He made a $2000 basketball bet with a secondary character I didn't catch the name of.
7. Desperate to clear his debt, Boogie resorts to placing wagers with his buddies (mainly on his successes with women). On the infamous Carol Heathrow bet, the group goes to see the movie entitled 'A Summer Place'.

Answer: True

This scene is too funny to not crack at least a smile at. This being a family site, it's best not described, but it would explain why popcorn boxes no longer have those flaps at the bottom I suppose.
8. It can be stated that Shrevie has a noticeable obsession with music. This is demonstrated when he gets into a somewhat heated argument with his wife, Beth, for putting his records out of alphabetical and genre classification. To sound especially seething he reminds her of the song that was playing when they first met. Which song was this?

Answer: Ain't That A Shame

Shrevie: 'Every one of my records means something. The label, the producer, the year it was made, who was copying whose styles, who was expanding on that. Don't you understand? When I listen to my records, they take me back to certain points in my life, ok? Just don't touch my records. Ever.

The first time I met you. Modell's sister's high school graduation party, 1955 right? And "Ain't That a Shame" was playing when I walked in the door!'
9. The central event of the film is the marriage between Eddie and Elise. What does Eddie insist that Elise do before he agrees to go through with the marriage?

Answer: Pass a football quiz

This is another one of the humorous elements. Eddie first insisted that the wedding colors be blue and white in salute to the Colts, then compiled an 140 question oral exam for his fiancee to take before taking his marital vows with her. She was off by two points but good sense prevailed and he gave them to her.
10. In the final scene did one of the bridemaids catch Elise's bouquet?

Answer: No

Though a few of the ladies touched the bouquet as it was airborne it, as fate would have it, landed on the table occupied by the guy group. Thanks for taking my quiz! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
