Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Good Girl" is about married couple Justine (Jennifer Aniston) and Phil (John C Reilly). What is their surname?

Answer: Last

This is an appropriate surname for Justine, who seems to feel that she has finished "last" in life. Viewers find this out when Justine and Phil are waiting in the fertility clinic. The nurse comes out and calls for "Mr. Last?"
2. Phil paints houses. He does this with his best friend Bubba (Tim Blake Nelson), when the weather isn't bad. Otherwise the pair hang out at Phil's place. When Justine comes home for the first time in the movie, what cartoon are Phil and Bubba watching?

Answer: Happy Tree Friends

On this particular occasion, Phil and Bubba can't paint because of the wind. They appear to be very amused by this macarbe cartoon, which features cute animals being hurt in terrible ways. When Justine arrives home, she becomes upset with them because they've got blue paint all over the couch.
3. Justine works at a store called the Retail Rodeo. She embarks upon an affair with a younger co-worker Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal). What novel is Holden reading when Justine first makes conversation with him?

Answer: Catcher in the Rye

As he mentions to Justine, Holden is named after the main character in the book, "Catcher in the Rye". This is actually the name he calls himself; his real name is Tom. Holden (in the film) relates to the character Holden in the book. He feels "put upon" by the world and misunderstood.
4. Aside from being a cashier at the Retail Rodeo, Holden is a writer. He gives two of his stories to Justine to read, and she finds that they are essentially the same, with the main character killing himself at the end. What are the two ways that his main character kills himself?

Answer: Jumping off a bridge and drinking poison

Justine describes Holden's stories as "intense". Both are "the story of what a story would be. About a boy that was put upon". Other people don't get him and he eventually feels he will never be understood by anyone. In both of the stories, the boy kills himself at the end, in one by jumping over a bridge, and the other by drinking a bottle of bug poison.
5. At the Retail Rodeo, Justine also works with an abnormally cheerful woman called Gwen (Deborah Rush). What two components of Justine's diet does Gwen suggest are causing Justine to have little energy?

Answer: meat and dairy

Gwen makes this observation during an early scene where she and Justine are having lunch together. Gwen is "ten years older than (Justine) and has ten times the energy" because she doesn't eat meat or dairy. Gwen goes on to suggest that the food Justine eats might be the reason Justine can't get pregnant, and why Justine walks around with a "hung-jaw look" on her face.
6. Gwen becomes sick and Justine has to take her to the hospital. What is the name of the hospital?

Answer: Saint Catherine's

Gwen gets sick from eating some blackberries she bought on the side of the road, and store manager Jack Field asks Justine to take her to Saint Catherine's. Justine ends up just dumping Gwen at the doors of the hospital, since she is late to go and meet Holden. Gwen dies, and Justine feels quite guilty that she just left her.
7. Justine works with a colorful young woman named Cheryl (Zooey Deschanel). Which of these jobs do we NOT see Cheryl doing at the Retail Rodeo?

Answer: Storeroom Supervisor

Viewers first see (or hear, actually) Cheryl when she is making a "creative" announcement about a special on liquid drain cleaner over the PA system. Later she can be seen "politely" serving a customer at the checkout. After Gwen dies, Jack moves her over to Cosmetics, and tells her to behave and listen to Justine.
8. Bubba discovers Justine and Holden's affair, and he asks Justine to visit him at his house to talk about it. Here Justine meets Bubba's friendly pet dog. What is the name of Bubba's dog?

Answer: Bits

Bits barks incessantly, and Bubba tells him over and over: "In your corner Bits!" Bits later gets back at Bubba by pulling away a sheet that is covering Bubba, leaving him naked in the street. The credits list Bits' real name as Enzo.
9. Because Justine fears exposure, Holden concocts an elaborate scheme to get some money somehow so the pair can run off together. He actually goes through with the plan and robs the Retail Rodeo. He barely gets away with it, however. How do the police and store manager Jack know immediately that Holden robbed the store?

Answer: He leaves his cashier's key in the door.

Holden robs his parents, then blows open the Retail Rodeo safe with a gun and steals $15,000. His plan is to run away with Justine, but she's not too sure about it. Store Manager Jack Field confronts Justine about the crime, suspecting her of being in on it. It turns out that more people knew about her affair than she originally thought.
10. Which of the characters actually tells Justine that she is a "good girl"?

Answer: Her boss, Jack

In the end, Justine has a choice: either run away with Holden or stay and face up to the consequences of her actions. She chooses to stick with what she knows, and saves herself by telling her boss where to find Holden after he steals money from the store. Her boss, Jack Field, tells her, "You done good. You're a good girl."
