Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Part way through the movie I went for popcorn. When I got back my friend announced that the old lady burst out of her room and sliced the investigator with a knife. He fell backward down the stairs and died. What was this movie?

Answer: Psycho

The investigator, Arbogast (Martin Balsam), was one of several characters to meet an early demise in Hitchcock's classic "Psycho". Hitchcock utilized his TV show crew and shot the film in black and white. It went on to become one of the greatest films in history.
2. When I got back from buying an ice cream snack, I was informed that Albert and Rosie came up with the idea of giving Albert's new scientific product to the Moscow Ballet. It would make them move faster, thus creating more time for the rock 'n roll act on a national TV show. What was this rockin' musical?

Answer: Bye Bye Birdie

Albert (Dick Van Dyke) developed a product that would speed up the actions of animals and people. They even had a slogan, "Feed up with Speed Up". Ann-Margret, who was 22 at the time, played a high school student.
3. Coming back from the snack bar with a cola, I was told that the man in the green suit was stabbed by the Hell's Angels because they thought he had a loaded gun in front of the stage. What was the name of this exciting rockumentary?

Answer: Gimme Shelter

The Rolling Stones recruited the Hell's Angels to maintain control of the crowd at the Altamont Speedway concert in 1969. Things did not go very well due largely to an uncooperative crowd. The Maysles filmed the event and managed to capture the knifing of the man with the gun.
4. After making a phone call in the lobby, I happened to miss a scene in which a nosy neighbor couple got into a taxi and announced that they were leaving their Brownstone and heading off to Dubrovnik. In what film was this particular ploy used?

Answer: Rosemary's Baby

"Rosemary's Baby" was Roman Polanski's classic 1968 telling of Ira Levin's horror tale. Ruth Gordon received a well-deserved Supporting Actress Academy Award as Minnie Castavetes, who, along with her husband, Roman (Sydney Blackmer), was an accomplished witch.
5. When I returned to my seat after using the theatre's facilities, my companion informed me that the thieving girl threw herself into the ship's pool supposedly to commit suicide. Sean Connery revived her, but what was this sex-suspense film?

Answer: Marnie

"Marnie" was Hitchcock's film following "The Birds". It did not meet with much success or acclaim at the time. Since then it has accrued its much deserved recognition and faithful following. Connery asked Marnie (Tippi Hedren) why she didn't just throw herself overboard. Her reply was, "The idea was to kill myself, not feed the damn fish." Well said.
6. I came back to my seat with a much-needed hot dog only to be told that the French girl discovered that the mystery man in her pictures was the photo booth repairman! What is this warm and wonderful French film?

Answer: Amelie

"Amelie", directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, starred an amazing Audrey Tautou. To see more of her talent, find "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not". "Amelie" was nominated for Best Foreign Language film in the U.S., but did not win. The film did get high recognition in France, though.
7. This was a shocker! My friend informed me that Ellen Burstyn's refrigerator, with big metal teeth, came across the room to attack her. At least that's the way she saw it. It's a unique scene. What is the film?

Answer: Requiem for a Dream

In the year 2000, Darren Aronofsky took movie-goers by surprise by releasing "Requiem for a Dream". It's a wildly imaginative and grim look into the world of drug addicts. Ellen Burstyn received the film's only Academy Award nomination. Aronofsky had previously made "Pi" which certainly has its followers.
8. I left my seat a little early for this showing. I missed a scene in which a guttersnipe had the nerve to ask the headmaster for more gruel. It turned out to be a big mistake. Lots of singing and dancing fills this movie. Do you know what it is?

Answer: Oliver!

"Oliver!" had been filmed eight times previously as a straight Dickens drama. In 1960 it was streamlined for the London stage. Diector Carol Reed (uncle of Oliver Reed) turned the production into a stunning five Oscar, Best Picture winner in 1968. "Oliver!" spawned such standard tunes as "Where is Love?" and "Who Will Buy?"
9. My friend said, "You missed a great moment. The husband pointed a rifle at his wife's head, but it turned out to be a fake stage rifle with an umbrella in it. Everyone temporarily panicked." What was this awesome drama?

Answer: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Mike Nichol's classic rendition of Edward Albee's play garnered thirteen Academy Award nominations and walked away with five. Elizabeth Taylor received Best Actress and Sandy Dennis got Supporting. It's an entertaining and exhausting film experience.
10. "Oh my gosh," uttered my movie friend, "Mike Swale's (Peter Berg) annulled marriage was to Trish, a transgendered person." What was the title of this twisted and exciting drama?

Answer: The Last Seduction

"The Last Seduction" director, John Dahl, also made "Red Rock West" and "Joy Ride", among others. "The Last Seduction" ran on pay cable during the year of its release, making it ineligible for Academy Award consideration. There is a chance Linda Fiorentino would have received an acting nomination for one of the very greatest femme fatale performances imaginable.
