Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which movie does Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade (Al Pacino), a retired Army officer, dance a tango with a young lady called Donna (Gabrielle Anwar)?

Answer: Scent Of A Woman

"Scent Of A Woman" (1992) tells the story of Charlie Simmons, a student (played by Chris O'Donnell), who gets a job as a personal assistant to Colonel Frank Slade (Al Pacino). He learns that the Colonel intends to kill himself - but not until he has eaten at an expensive restaurant, stayed at a luxury hotel, made love to a beautiful woman and visited his brother.

Whilst in the restaurant, the Colonel dances a tango with a beautiful young girl called Donna. The music they dance to is called "Tango (Por Una Cabeza)". It was arranged by John Williams and the violin part was played by Itzhak Perlman. "Whoo-ah".
2. Heath Ledger starred in "A Knight's Tale" in 2001. The film includes a banqueting scene. Guests begin dancing to a soundtrack of medieval music which is gradually replaced by a David Bowie track. What David Bowie song is playing?

Answer: Golden Years

"A Knight's Tale" is loosely based on Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" and includes a character named Chaucer (played by Paul Bettany). It combines a medieval story of knights taking part in a jousting competition with modern rock and themes of celebrity.

In the dance scene, which is shot in the style of a music video, Heath Ledger's character is asked to demonstrate a dance from his country. The music segues from a medieval tune to David Bowie's "Golden Years". "Golden Years" was a top ten hit single for David Bowie in both the UK and US in 1975. A longer version appeared on his "Station to Station" album, released the following year.
3. "Airplane!" (1990) parodied many other films. One of my favourite scenes is set in a night club. Which film is parodied when Robert Hayes dons his white suit and dances with Julie Hagerty to "Stayin' Alive"?

Answer: Saturday Night Fever

"Airplane!" is primarily a spoof of airborne disaster movies but it also looked elsewhere for inspiration. For example, the opening title scene, parodies "Jaws".

One of the many flashbacks takes us to the Magumba Bar off the Barbary Coast, where Ted Striker (played by Robert Hayes) was stationed in the navy. In this scene, Striker first meets Elaine (played by Julie Hagerty) in a seedy bar. Taking off his white navy jacket to reveal a suit similar to the one worn by John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever", he dances with Elaine as girl scouts fight in the background.

The song "Stayin' Alive" was written by The Bee Gees and used behind the opening scenes of the film "Saturday Night Fever". The Bee Gees gave permission for the track to be speeded up for "Airplane!".
4. In this movie five teenage stereotypes are forced to spend time together in a school library one Saturday. The geek puts music on and they dance (in their own stereotypical ways). The film was directed by John Hughes and starred members of the 'brat pack'. What 1985 film am I describing?

Answer: The Breakfast Club

"The Breakfast Club" stars Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy, and shows the five teenagers sharing a Saturday in detention. The characters they play are stereotypes of the criminal, the princess, the nerd, the ditzy artist and the jock.

The track they all dance to is "We Are Not Alone" by Karla DeVito.
5. The film is "Risky Business" (1983). The song is "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger. The dance scene starts with the actor sliding into view. But who is the actor dancing in his underpants?

Answer: Tom Cruise

"Risky Business" is a teen drama/comedy film. First choice for the lead part of Joel was Timothy Hutton. Tom Hanks and Nicholas Cage also auditioned, but the part went to Tom Cruise.

"Risky Business" is regarded as the movie which launched Tom Cruise's career, giving him his first leading role. He is now a film producer as well as an actor and in 2006 was ranked the world's most powerful celebrity by "Forbes" magazine.

The iconic dance sequence in "Risky Business" was improvised and in order to carry out the famous slide at the start of the scene, Cruise wore socks and waxed the floor.
6. Which 2008 movie, winner of eight Oscars, starts with a torture scene and ends with a Bollywood style dance scene in a Mumbai train station?

Answer: Slumdog Millionaire

"Slumdog Millionaire" was adapted from a novel by Vikas Swarup called "Q & A" and directed by Danny Boyle. It won eight Oscars including Best Motion Picture and Best Original Song for "Jai Ho".

The film is about a young boy from the slums who appears on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and wins the top prize, despite being suspected of cheating.

For a film which starts with such gritty realism, the choreographed dance scene at the end is something of a surprise, although it does pay homage to the style of Bollywood films. During the closing credits, the main characters dance along with hundreds of extras in the busy train station to the song "Jai Ho".

"Jai Ho", meaning "Victory to You", was sung mainly in Hindi and Spanish. An English version of "Jai Ho" featuring the Pussycat Dolls was released in 2009. It reached number three in the UK charts and number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.
7. In which film does Tom Hanks play "Chopsticks" and "Heart and Soul", with his feet, on a giant piano?

Answer: Big

"Big" (1988), starring Tom Hanks, is a movie about a boy called Josh who makes a wish to grow up and, courtesy of an old fairground fortune telling machine, does so overnight. "Big" was the first film directed by a woman (Penny Marshall) to gross over $100 m.

The piano dance scene occurs when Josh (played by Hanks) meets the owner of MacMillan Toy Company (Robert Loggia) at the FAO Schwarz toy store. They play a duet together on a foot-operated giant electronic keyboard.

The big piano was invented in 1976 by Remo Saraceni.
8. The opening scenes for the film "Caddyshack" feature one of the stars of the show boogying to Kenny Logins' "I'm Alright". According to the film credits, who is the dancer?

Answer: Chuck Rodent

"Caddyshack" (1980) is a comedy set at an exclusive golf club and tells the story of a number of caddies. Sub-plots involve a property developer and the ongoing battle between the groundskeeper and a destructive gopher.

One of the stars of the movie (some would say THE star) is the animated gopher, listed in the credits as Chuck Rodent. The dancing gopher, who creates mayhem on the golf course, was so popular that he became available as a plush toy, computer software etc.

The film was directed by Harold Ramis and its human stars included Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray.
9. In which British romantic comedy does Hugh Grant, playing the part of a newly elected British Prime Minister, dance down the stairs of Number 10 to "Jump"?

Answer: Love Actually

"Love Actually" was written and directed by Richard Curtis. It was released in November 2003 and was Curtis' directorial debut. Although an ensemble piece, "Love Actually" was the fourth Curtis/Grant collaboration, following the highly successful "Four Weddings and a Funeral", "Notting Hill" and "Bridget Jones's Diary".

The film is a series of love stories of various people, some linked together, and shows several different sides of love. Grant plays a bachelor Prime Minister who falls in love with the tea lady (Martine McCutcheon) within minutes of entering his official residence at 10 Downing Street.

In the film Hugh Grant has an amusing and impromptu dance around Downing Street to "Jump (For My Love)" by The Pointer Sisters, which comes to a sudden end when he realises he is not alone.
10. This iconic dance scene truly provides a twist in the story. What film gave us John Travolta and Uma Thurman twisting to "You Never Can Tell"?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

"Pulp Fiction" (1994) was directed and co-written by Quentin Tarantino. It is a film noir/black comedy, which interweaves three different story lines about mobsters, thieves and a briefcase in non-linear sequences. It is known for its violence and humourous dialogue and for revitalising John Travolta's career.

In the famous dance scene Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) take part in, and win, a dance competition at Jack Rabbit Slim's, performing a twist to Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell".

According to Uma Thurman, she based her dancing on the character Duchess from the movie "The Aristocats" (1970). John Travolta attributes some of their dance moves to Adam West's dance from the 1960's "Batman" TV show episode "Hi Diddle Riddle" (for those who want to check it out, it's about 2/3 through the episode).
