Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alan Smithee received director's credit for the 1989 thriller, 'Catchfire'. Who really directed this film?

Answer: Dennis Hopper

Hopper also starred in the movie opposite Jodie Foster. 1991 saw the release of a director's cut, which (I would hope) Hopper was much happier with.
2. Which of these big-time directors credited his TV movie, 'Riviera' (1987), to Alan Smithee?

Answer: John Frankenheimer

Certainly better known for such fare as 'The Manchurian Candidate' (1962), 'Ronin' (1998), and 'Reindeer Games' (2000).
3. What kind of credit did Sam Raimi give to Alan Smithee on the 1992 film, 'The Nutt House'?

Answer: writing

He and Ivan Raimi credited their screenplay work to Alan Smithee Jr. and Sr., respectively. Sam Raimi also directed the 'Evil Dead' series, 'A Simple Plan' (1998), 'The Gift' (2000), and 'Spider-Man' (2002).
4. Alan Smithee had a small part as an actor in 'Flynn' (1996), playing the Man in Black. This film was a biopic of Errol Flynn. Who played the title character?

Answer: Guy Pearce

This was a while before 'Memento'. So here's what I'm wondering. What actor feels his work playing the Man in Black to be so butchered that it merits crediting Alan Smithee? He probably didn't even have any lines!
5. Gianni Bozzacchi wrote and directed 'I Love N.Y.' (1988), only to give both credits to Alan Smithee. Which young actor starred in this movie?

Answer: Scott Baio

Baio is more famous for the TV series, 'Charles in Charge'.
6. Did Alan Smithee take credit for any work done by women filmmakers in the 20th century?

Answer: No

Although we could be idealistic and say that's because women don't need to give credit to Smithee, I think the unfortunate likelihood is more that there just aren't all that many working women filmmakers who would have the opportunity to credit Smithee.

Then again, as pointed out by scottandrewh (thanks!), Martha Coolidge might have given her directorial credit on 'Joy of Sex' (1984) to Alan Smithee if she had known it was within her rights. Producers added a bunch of nude scenes with different actors to Coolidge's cut of the film, certainly grounds for a Smithee credit.
7. 'Solar Crisis' (1990) was an action flick about a solar flare that mere earthlings had to overcome before it could fry the earth. The director removed his name from the credits, but you might be surprised by the credited cast. Who did NOT work on this film?

Answer: Richard Burton

I wonder how their managers or agents convinced them to work on this movie. It sounds awful to me!
8. Which horror film credits Alan Smithee as its director?

Answer: Hellraiser: Bloodline

Though all of these films are worthy of embarrassment, only 'Hellraiser: Bloodline' (1996) was actually disowned (by Kevin Yagher).
9. The 1997 comedy 'An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn' is about a film editor named Alan Smithee who comes to Hollywood and is contracted to direct a film. When he realizes that he has no control over the film's development, and in fact thinks it's a real stinker, he must decide what to do since he cannot disown it by crediting Alan Smithee (it's already his name). Who was NOT one of the stars of the film Smithee was directing?

Answer: Sandra Bullock

And they all play themselves in the movie. True to form, director Arthur Hiller replaced his name with that of Alan Smithee for the credits.
10. This is in the spirit of Alan Smithee, so it's appearing in the quiz. In 1998, Tony Kaye tried to take legal action to replace his name with another for the directing credit on 'American History X'. What name did Kaye want to use?

Answer: Humpty Dumpty

Kaye complained that Edward Norton, the film's star, became too involved in the editing process and the film ended up not being what Kaye had intended. Needless to say, the Director's Guild would not permit Kaye to use his pseudonym of choice.
