Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Alberto teach Luca to say to quiet his fears?

Answer: "Silenzio Bruno!"

While Luca is a quiet and reserved young sea-monster, Alberto is very outgoing and a risk-taker. This makes them a very unlikely pair, however, it allows Luca a chance to grow and be more adventurous and Alberto an opportunity to be grounded in reality. The catchphrase "Silenzio Bruno!" is Luca's way of quieting his fears and trying new things that he thinks that he might be scared of.

The line itself came from one of the writers of the movie who pitched the inspiration and it caught on. In the movie, Luca questions why his fears are called "Bruno" but Alberto says that it doesn't matter and then teaches Luca to say "Silenzio Bruno!" every time he doubts his ability to do something.
2. Which of Luca's family members admits that they went to the surface?

Answer: Grandma Paguro

Luca gets dragged onto the surface by Alberto and learns that being dry turns him into one of the "land monsters," but also realizes that he's having an amazing time. When eating around the table with his family, Luca broaches the subject of being on the surface to which his parents express outrage and displeasure.

However, Luca's grandmother admits that she occasionally goes to the surface. When Luca is almost caught, returning home late after being on the surface with Alberto, she covers for Luca saying that she sent him to get sea cucumbers for her.
3. What's the first human object that Luca finds?

Answer: Alarm clock

In the beginning of the movie, two fishermen decide to go fish near Isola del Mare where sightings of sea monsters have been reported in the past. When the elder fisherman insists that there's no such thing as a sea monster, the two get plundered by a sea monster and many of their possessions get dropped or thrown into the sea.

Luca, while herding his goatfish, finds some of these objects on the floor of the sea, starting with an alarm clock. He next finds a playing card, a coffee mug, and a gramophone. It is later found out that the sea monster who scared the fishermen was Alberto who comes to collect 'his' objects in an old-style diving suit.
4. The Portorosso Cup is a triathlon consisting of three parts. Which is *not* one of them?

Answer: Running

As Giulia describes it, the Portorosso Cup is "an epic, grueling, traditional Italian triathlon. Swimming, cycling, and eating pasta." Giulia entered the Portorosso Cup in the previous year to end Ercole's "reign of terror," however, she threw up during the race and was forced to exit it in the middle. Ercole won that year making it five wins in a row for the bully. This year Giulia is even more determined to win and is happy to take on teammates.

The swimming is out into the bay the town of Portorosso is built on; the pasta eating is a bowl of 'mystery' pasta that is given to contestants ("could be cannelloni, penne, fusilli, trofie, even lasagne. And you have to use a forchetta. It's the rule"); the cycling is up to the top of Mount Portorosso and back down.
5. How did Massimo, Giulia's father, lose his arm?

Answer: He was born that way

When Massimo takes Luca and Alberto out fishing for the first time, he jokes about how his arm was eaten by a sea monster. He quickly recants, seeing the look on the boys' faces, and tells them that "this is how I came into the world." Despite having only one arm, Massimo is very adept with all sorts of knives and sharp objects.

He uses them on things that swim, making Luca and Alberto quite nervous about exposing themselves. Ultimately, Massimo is the first villager to stand up for the two sea monsters when they expose themselves at the end of the Portorosso Cup.
6. What object does Giulia show Luca that gets him interested in school?

Answer: Telescope

Luca and Giulia have a discussion about the stars. Luca was told by Alberto that the stars are little anchovies and Giulia wants to tell Luca the truth, but, even more so, she wants to show him the truth. They hop over a few rooftops to Old man Bernardi's house to look through the telescope there and Luca is amazed to discover the heavens.

He is also fascinated by Giulia's textbook from school, which she gifts to him. These things make Luca interested in school, but this drives a wedge between Luca and Alberto. Alberto doesn't want to lose his friend and the carefree adventure the two have planned.
7. How does Luca finally get along with Giulia's cat?

Answer: He gives him a fish

Machiavelli, Giulia's cat, is immediately suspicious of Luca and Alberto when they get to the Marcovaldi house. The cat particularly displays a dislike for Luca and attacks him, scratching up his face. Again, on Massimo's boat when the three are fishing, Machiavelli attacks Luca which leads Luca to throw the cat into the sea, something that shocks Machiavelli.

However, as a peace offering, Luca stuffs a small fish into Machiavelli's mouth which lets the cat know that Luca is friendly.
8. What fish does Luca say that Ercole resembles?

Answer: Catfish

Ercole is the local bully who has won the Portorosso Cup five times in a row and is seeking a record-breaking sixth win. When the 'underdogs' form a team to try and beat him, Ercole initially has one of his henchmen steal the entry fee from Giulia. However, Alberto and Luca stand up to him, much to his chagrin. Alberto is willing to fight Ercole, but Luca insults him by calling him a catfish. At fist, the crowd of onlookers is confused, why a catfish? But then Luca explains: "they're bottom-feeders, and they also have two sad little whiskers." This is referring to the two wisps of hair that Ercole has growing as a moustache.

Ercole is insulted and gives back the money vowing to destroy Luca, as both are anchoring their team and doing the cycling.
9. Where does Giulia let Luca and Alberto sleep while they are staying with her?

Answer: In her 'hideout'

Alberto and Luca admit to Giulia that they're runaways and Giulia takes them into her house, has her father fix them a meal, and lets them sleep in her tree house. The boys immediately recognize this tree house as her hideout and are thrilled to be sleeping under the stars. Unfortunately, the very first night that they stayed in the tree house it rained overnight. Both of the boys got wet turning them into their sea monster form. Luckily, Giulia was all about the fanfare and did not notice them right away when she opened her window. This allowed Luca to drag Alberto out of the tree and the two boys were able to dry off.

As the movie progresses, the two boys get more and more comfortable sleeping in the hideout and wake up later and later.
10. Are there sea monsters living in Portorosso before Luca and Alberto show up?

Answer: Yes

When Alberto and Luca first get to the village, they look for ways to fit in so that they aren't identified as sea monsters. One of the things they overhear one fisherman say to another is "what's wrong with you, stupido?" The boys assume that it's customary to say this, and, when they first walk into the village, Alberto tries it out on two other fishermen who sneer at the two boys. However, they pass by the boys so Alberto and Luca assume it was successful.

Alberto then encourages Luca to say it to two old ladies coming out of a gelato shop. The ladies are insulted and the boys end up with gelato on their heads. At the end of the movie, when Luca reveals his true form, it turns out that these two old ladies are actually sea monsters living in Portorosso.
11. What game do the children in the town square play with Daniela, Luca's mother?

Answer: Football

In the Portorosso town square the children are usually playing football (soccer). When Luca and Alberto show up for the first time in the town, the kids kick their ball and it lands at Luca's feet. They encourage Luca to kick the ball back to them. Unfortunately, he has never kicked a ball before and it careens crazily, knocking over Ercole's Vespa. The Vespa nearly falls on the ground until Ciccio dives underneath it to prevent it from scratching.

When Daniela and Lorenzo arrive in the town, they see the kids playing soccer. Daniela also notices that there's a fountain in the town square. Since she doesn't know what Luca's human form looks like, she tries to get the kids wet so that if one of them is Luca, the water will reveal him as a sea monster. Daniela plays a very competitive game and knocks nearly every kid in the fountain, however, none of them is her kid.
12. What item of clothing does Ercole, the main antagonist, not want to get wet?

Answer: Sweater

Ercole is a character who is very full of himself, arrogant, and antagonistic towards most people (and definitely towards sea monsters). He wants to show people up by trying to be the best at everything, including the Portorosso Cup, a competition he should not even be competing in due to his age. Giulia has a bone to pick with him as well, calling his string of wins in the Portorosso Cup a "reign of terror."

When Ercole comes into town on the day that Luca and Alberto also show up, he rides in on his shiny red Vespa. Over his shoulders is a sweater. Ercole does not want this sweater to get wet because it is wool; a shrunken sweater would ruin his look.
13. What kind of pasta sauce does Massimo, Giulia's father, make for Luca and Alberto that they love?

Answer: Pesto

When Luca and Alberto are taken by Giulia to her home, Massimo, Giulia's father, is preparing dinner. Accepting the two boys as Giulia's friends, he puts down plates of dinner, pasta. Luca and Alberto have never eaten pasta before (nor used a fork), but once they taste the trenette al pesto, they shovel it in with their hands. This soon becomes the boys' favourite dish.
14. What big city is Giulia's school in?

Answer: Genova

Giulia's parents live in two places, her father in Portorosso and her mother in Genova (that's Italian for Genoa). Most of the year Giulia stays with her mother in Genova where she also goes to school. In the summer she comes to stay with her father, but she usually feels like an outsider, something that Luca can identify with. Giulia tells Luca about all of the interesting things that she learns at the school and Luca is enamoured by the idea of going there himself to learn those things too.

After winning the Portorosso Cup, Luca and Alberto buy their Vespa, however, Alberto realizes that Luca's heart is set on learning. Luca didn't want to disappoint his friend. Alberto sells the Vespa saving up the money to allow Luca to reach Genova and to attend Giulia's school.
15. What vehicle do Luca and Alberto desperately want to buy?

Answer: Vespa

When Luca goes on land with Alberto for the first time and goes to his home in the abandoned lighthouse, Luca sees a poster of a Vespa with the slogan "Vespa is freedom." Luca notes that Alberto has all the parts they need to build themselves a makeshift Vespa, and they do, rolling it down the hill and jumping into the sea with it. The Vespa itself is a goal for them, allowing them the freedom to move around land in a carefree way. Their dream is to be able to buy one in order to roam around together from town to town without a care in the world. However, both boys are, in fact, running away from something - Luca from his overbearing parents and Alberto from the fact that he was abandoned.

In the end, after the two win the Portorosso Cup, they do buy a used Vespa. However, it's quickly returned to the dealer when they both realize that their dream has changed.
