Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did we first see Arthur Kirkland (Al Pacino) at the beginning of the movie?

Answer: In a prison cell

He was sitting on the floor in a prison cell, next to the bars. He was held on a 'contempt of court' charge, leveled at him for attempting to strike a judge!
The judge he had attempted to strike was Judge Henry Fleming, who was to become a client of Arthur later in the movie. It was well known that Kirkland hated Judge Fleming.
2. Arthur Kirkland received a phone call from his first and best client, (according to the client) telling him he needed his lawyer to be present because of an altercation he had been involved in. What was the problem he needed his lawyer for?

Answer: A car accident

His client, Carl Travers, played by Dominic Chianese, had been involved in a car accident and had screamed obscenities at the other driver involved. Arthur drove to the scene and attempted to calm his client, who would have none of it! Carl continued to yell at the other driver, "My lawyer here, is the best, and will get the death penalty for this!"
3. What city did Director Norman Jewison choose to make his movie in?

Answer: Baltimore

Norman Jewison was aware of some beautiful courthouses in Baltimore, and received permission to film in several of them. One of the courtrooms had a beautiful mural and white marble walls. (I hadn't paid much attention to the backdrop until I watched the movie again in preparation for this quiz.)
4. One of Arthur's young clients was white and had been arrested for a minor infraction, what was that infraction?

Answer: A broken tail light

Arthur Kirkland had two other clients, one a young white man who had been arrested because one of the tail lights on his car didn't work. The arresting officer detained him. The officer had discovered that there was an outstanding warrant in Alabama for a man with the same name, Jeff McCullough. Jeff insisted that it wasn't him, but the arresting officer didn't believe him.

The other man was black and had been booked on a charge of complicity in the robbing of a taxi driver. He was easily noticed because of the blonde wig he wore.

His name was Ralph Agee, pronounced Aggy.
5. What did a criminal, who had been charged with selling illegal lottery tickets, try to do with the tickets?

Answer: He tried to eat them.

He did this while his lawyer flirted with a woman in the courtroom. As soon as the lawyers realized what he was doing, all seven pounced on him to prevent him from swallowing them. This took place as the judge walked onto the bench before proceedings had commenced.
6. What did the presiding judge, Judge Jack Rayford do to try to bring order back to his courtroom?

Answer: Fired a shot into the air from a gun concealed under his robe

This was a comedic moment in the movie. Judge Jack Rayford said, after firing the shot "Gentlemen, do I need to remind you that this is a court of law!"
Norman Jewison later said that he was surprised to find, while doing research for this movie, that many judges wore guns.
7. Where did Judge Jack Rayford ask Arthur to accompany him on the following Sunday, after they met in a hallway?

Answer: Flying in a helicopter

As the film progressed the viewer bacame aware that Judge Rayford was a man with a suicidal bent to him. Arthur tried to get out of this trip and told the judge "I don't like doing anything that takes place off the ground."
The judge would not let him out of it, "You promised" he said.
The judge did several other things during the movie that confirmed that he had a death wish, to be mentioned in my second quiz related to this movie.
8. Who played the detestable Judge Henry Fleming in this movie?

Answer: John Forsythe

Jack Warden played Judge Jack Rayford so well in this movie; raucous and crusty. Lee Strasberg played Grandpa Sam. Lee had been a mentor of Al Pacino's in the actor's younger days. Al Pacino often asked Lee to appear with him in his movies, (as Hyman Roth in the first two "Godfather" Movies). Jeffrey Tambor was equally as riveting as the other characters.

He usually appeared bald in most other roles.
9. Where did Judge Jack Rayford (Jack Warden) like to eat his lunch?

Answer: On a 4th floor ledge

This was another of Judge Jack Rayford's many quirks. He obviously was not afraid of heights. He had also tried to shoot himself in his private bathroom using a rifle! But luckily, or unluckily, his finger couldn't reach the trigger.
10. When a bedraggled Arthur Kirkland finally went to his office, he asked his secretary for coffee. He then proceeded to his bathroom to shave, he sprayed contents from a red can onto his hands, and said "there's no foam!" His secretary, who was standing outside the bathroom door, said "That's because it's _____!"

Answer: Deodorant

This was another light moment in the movie; there were several. His secretary told him "You have three new clients coming in this afternoon". He asked her for coffee, she ignored this request and continued to list his appointments for that afternoon. "It's Tuesday, so don't forget to go and visit your Grandfather. Plus you have to be back in court by 2:15pm".

He again begged her for coffee!
