Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the oldest animated character still owned and used by the Disney Company?

Answer: Pete

Julius, along with everything from the "Alice Comedies", has been in the public domain for a while. However, one character from that series, Pegleg Pete, is still owned and used by the company frequently. Whether he's been a cat, a dog, or even a bear, Pete has been around for over eighty years, tormenting Julius, Oswald, Mickey, and Goofy.
2. In the movie "Fantasia", Brutus does not think that he will find the girl for him, until cherubs lead him to another lonely soul. What is her name?

Answer: Melissa

Except for Hyacinth, the hippo from "The Dance of the Hours" sequence in "Fantasia", these characters are all from the "Pastoral Symphony". Like the rest of the characters in "Fantasia", Brutus and Melissa, the bluish-purple centaurs, are not named in the movie.

However, most of these characters do have names if you take the time to look them up. I found this particular tidbit on a wonderful site called HooZoo, a pretty interesting Disney character database.
3. Which Disney character was the studio's first attempt at drawing a truly realistic female character?

Answer: Persephone, the Goddess of Spring

Persephone, the protagonist of the "Silly Symphony" short, "Goddess of Spring", was created mainly to serve the purpose of allowing the animators to practice creating a realistic female, in preparation for the movie they were about to begin work on: "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

The Cookie Queen was also a "Silly Symphony" character, but she is mainly drawn as a rather flat, but human-like cookie. She is a Cinderella-like cookie who wants to go to the Cookie Carnival, but has nothing to wear, until a friendly "hobo cookie" dresses her up with some icing.

After being crowned the Queen of the Cookies (apparently something that happens at a Cookie Carnival), she chooses the hobo cookie as her King.
4. Which of the following separates the transformed Prince Adam from his servants, after the enchantress casts her spell and leaves him with the magic rose?

Answer: He ages, while they do not.

All of the "household objects" from "Beauty and the Beast" can move, talk, and feel. However, Adam is the only person affected by the enchantress' spell who still ages. Adam was ten, going on eleven, when he was transformed, and is now about twenty-one. Chip, on the other hand, is still a toddler after being transformed into a human, despite the fact that he has been basically a toddler in a teacup's body for the past decade.
5. In which Disney short subject do the seven dwarfs and Queen Grimhilde make cameo appearances as video game characters?

Answer: Runaway Brain

"Runaway Brain" is a short, released in 1995, which represented a sort of comeback for Mickey Mouse. In this short, Mickey has forgotten about his and Minnie's anniversary, and, through a misunderstanding, promises her a surprise vacation in Hawaii as a present. To raise money for the trip, he hires himself out to a mad scientist, who swaps his brain for that of a horrible monster.

The characters from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" appear in an early scene, in which Mickey is addicted to a "Mortal Kombat"-esque video game. "How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" and "Lorenzo" are other, more recent shorts, while "computer.don" was an episode of "Mouseworks."
6. Which Disney director(s) is/are famous for sweeping, dramatic pull-back shots?

Answer: Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise

The best examples of this are the ending shots of both "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". In fact, on the audio commentary presented on the collector's edition DVD of "Atlantis: The Lost Empire", the two joke about how often they use this technique. Trousdale and Wise also directed "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King", not to be confused with their contemporaries, Clements and Musker.

These two directed "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", "Pocahontas", and "Treasure Planet". Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman was basically Walt Disney's heir apparent from "The Jungle Book" to his retirement in 1980. Mark Dindal was the director of "Chicken Little".
7. Which of the following films contains no ethnically Native American characters?

Answer: Lilo and Stitch

"Lilo and Stitch" features many Native Hawaiians, but they are considered Polynesians, not Native Americans. Every human character in "Brother Bear" is an Inuit, and every human character in "The Emperor's New Groove" is an Incan. Joshua Strongbear Sweet from "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" is half-Arapaho on his mother's side, according to both his profile on the collector's edition DVD and his own dialogue in the film.
8. In the "Silly Symphony", "Music Land", which classical piece is used as a projectile weapon by the queen of the Land of Symphony?

Answer: Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"

The notes for the song are shot out of cannons in the shape of organ pipes, and launched at the Isle of Jazz. Beethoven's and Stravinsky's pieces were both used by Disney, however, as a part of "Fantasia 2000".
9. Which Disney film is credited with bringing the obscure mythological creature known as the caecilian back into the public eye?

Answer: The Little Mermaid

A caecilian is very similar to a mermaid, except instead of having the tail of a fish, it has the lower half of an octopus or squid. From the animator's take on Ursula, it does not seem that they knew of this creature or intended to make Ursula one, they just wanted to make her more sinister and different from other merpeople.

However, since 1989, the year of the film's release, caecilians have had a major spike in popularity among fans of fantasy creature. However, they are more often commonly as "sea witches" now, which goes to show how much influence "The Little Mermaid" had in ressurecting them.
10. Which of the following is a false statement? Hint: You have probably heard this falsehood several times, and most likely have come to accept it as law.

Answer: "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the first animated feature film.

Although "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the first animated feature film from the United States, the first from Disney, and the first in technicolor, there had been several other animated feature films in the world. The first was a (now lost) film from Argentina, called "El Apostol". Please note that, even though it is often said that Walt died during the making of "The Jungle Book", "The Aristocats" was also in production at this time.
