So, they end up going for a nice walk through the town, and we learn that Virgil lost his eyesight due to his cataracts when he was one.

The reason why it took so long for an operation to remove the cataracts was because Virgil and his sister didn't want him to go through the same pain that he had to go through in his infant years.
