In order for humans to be able to mine gold and understand commands, Terl orders Jonnie to be strapped into a learning machine so that he can learn the Psychlo's language. Along with language, the machine also gives Jonnie an understanding of the Psychlo's way of life, science, and math. Jonnie uses all that he learns to eventually defeat the Psychlos.

The Psychlos, in order to get the humans to be more agreeable, devise a plan to find out what type of food they would prefer to eat. They plant mini cameras on three humans and allow them to escape. In an old abandoned mall, they observe the humans eating a rat and figure that rats are the humans' preferred food. From that point on, Terl refers to Jonnie as 'rat brain'.

At the end, Jonnie manages to attach an explosive devise to Terl's arm and blows it off. Terl's second in command decides to side with the humans and helps incarcerate Terl. After Terl is jailed, Ker says, "At least you still have your gold."

The humans manage to send an atomic weapon through the planet-to-planet transporter. When the bomb explodes on Psychlo, the radiation mixes with the gases on the planet and burns off the atmosphere and destroys Psychlo.
