Becoming Jane Trivia Quiz

Jane Austen is one of my favourite authors. This film is not presented as historical fact, but instead wonders what would have happened if she embarked on a love affair with a man she mentioned in her letters.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Jane's sister?

Answer: Cassandra

At the beginning of the film, Cassandra is engaged to Robert Fowle, who then goes on an expedition to San Domingo as a minister. Unfortunately for Cassandra, he dies soon after landing. Neither of the sisters ever marry.

Eliza is Jane's cousin, who was married to a French count but has come to live with the Austens.

Anne is the name of the actress playing Jane.

Lucy is the name of Tom's cousin who is in love with him throughout the film.
2. Which of the following is NOT one of Jane's brothers mentioned in the film?

Answer: William

We never meet Edward, although Cassandra goes to stay with him and his family for his wife's lying-in (the last stages of her pregnancy and labour).

George is both deaf and mute. When Tom comes to apologise to Jane for not standing up to his uncle, George tries to defend Jane.

At the beginning of the film, Henry has just obtained his degree from Oxford, is an officer in the militia, and is being prepared for the clergy. We first meet him in London, joining Tom for an evening of debauchery.

Jane did actually have a few more brothers who lived away from Stevenage. One was in the navy, another was a clergyman, and her other brother had been adopted at a young age by relatives.
3. Why couldn't Eliza's husband, the Count, come to pay his respects to Lady Gresham?

Answer: He was executed during the French Revolution.

In this scene, the Austens have come to call on Lady Gresham, a noblewoman living in the area, after church one Sunday. One can find a few comparisons with Lady Catherine de Bourgh in "Pride and Prejudice" and other aristocrats in Jane Austen's novels. While walking to Lady Gresham's manor, she reveals her disgust at having to obey "her ladyship" every time she calls. This is when we first meet Mr. Wisley, and when his interest in Jane begins.

Unlike her husband, Eliza managed to escape the guillotine and went to live with the Austens. She and Henry are married by the end of the film.
4. Which sport does Jane join Tom and Henry in?

Answer: Cricket

This scene occurs at an interesting point in the movie. Jane and Tom are still relatively hostile towards each other, although they have begun to warm to each other. It is not until they discuss the book he recommends later, that the audience begins to see a fondness developing between them.

Apparently Jane was a keen cricketer in real life. According to the DVD's special features, Anne Hathaway was already proficient in softball, and actually did better than the actor playing her brother, Henry.

The other three options are games that would have been played at the time by middle- and upper-class families.
5. Does Jane end up accepting Mr. Wisley's proposal?

Answer: Yes

Jane accepts Mr. Wisley because Tom doesn't fight his uncle to marry Jane, and because she and the family need the money the marriage will bring. Her failed elopement leads Lady Gresham to break off the engagement, although Wisley takes an interest in Jane's writing.

The film does infer that Wisley inspired the first line of "Pride and Prejudice", as his last words are, "It is a truth universally acknowledged", although they are not used in the same context.
6. Why does Jane decide not to elope with Tom?

Answer: She finds a letter from his mother thanking him for the money he sent.

The audience already knows that Tom has quite a large, poor family back in Limerick, but it isn't until Jane finds his mother's letter that we realise the extent to which they depend on his sending his allowance. Jane realises that if she does marry Tom and they have their own family, at least one of the parties will become destitute and face starvation.
7. Which two characters distract Tom at different points in the film, almost causing him severe injury?

Answer: Henry and Lucy

The first time this happens is when Henry meets Tom at a boxing academy (also frequented by Lord Byron), and is knocked down flat by his opponent.

The next two are because of his cousin, Lucy. She sneaks a look through a window and sees him holding a gun. She gasps out in shock, and the gun goes off in his hands.

Lucy again causes injury when Tom intervenes at a boxing match at a fair. This time, Jane tells her off.
8. Which novel does Tom recommend that Jane read to "widen" her "horizons"?

Answer: "Tom Jones" - Henry Fielding

In real life, Tom Lefroy was apparently a big fan of the character of Tom Jones, and even had a white coat like him. Reading the novel prompts Jane and Tom to undergo a discussion over what a novel should show - morals or real life. Jane objected to the way in which the bad characters were given their just desserts - something that doesn't always happen in real life.
9. Apart from Tom Lefroy and Mr. Wisley, who proposes to Jane?

Answer: Mr. Warren

Mr. Warren is the first person to come across Jane when she returns from her failed elopement with Tom. Her response is the classic, "Are there no other women in Hampshire?"

Jane had several proposals throughout her life, although not necessarily by the same men depicted in the film. In the commentary, it is said that Mr. Wisley particularly was a combination of several of these suitors.
10. Jane and Tom never meet again after she ends the elopement.

Answer: False

Jane and Tom meet many years later at an opera recital. She has become an established and well-respected author, and he has become Lord High Justice of Ireland, with a wife and children. He names his eldest daughter after Jane. At a party held at her brother's house that evening, she asks Jane for a rare reading. Jane reads from "Pride and Prejudice". Tom recognises the irony of the situation and recognises their own experiences in the novel.
