Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the movie, "Being There", about?

Answer: A gardener whose employer has died

Chance is a gardener. A very simple-minded gardener. Everything he knows, he has learned from watching TV. When the "Old Man" he was employed by dies, he is forced out into the real world. The movie details the people he meets, how they misinterpret who he is, and his rise to prominence in society and politics.
2. In the movie, "Being There", the main character, Chance, introduces himself, but everyone misinterprets what he says. As a result, what is he called?

Answer: Chauncey Gardiner

When Chance introduces himself as "Chance the Gardener", they think he says, "Chauncey Gardiner", which is what everyone calls him from then on. Instead of believing he is a simple-minded gardener, they think he is an intellectual.
3. The movie, "Being There", details the interaction between Chance and the Rands. How does Chance meet the Rands?

Answer: He is hit by Mrs Rand's car

While Chance is watching television in a storefront, he backs up just as Mrs Rand's car is backing up. The car strikes his leg. To avoid a possible lawsuit, Mrs Rand offers Chance a ride to her home and has her personal doctor tend to his minor injury.
4. The setting for much of the movie, "Being There", is a famous estate. What estate is used in the movie?

Answer: The Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore Estate is used as the residence of the Rand's. Although the Biltmore Estate is located in Asheville, NC, and is 470 miles from Washington, DC, for the movie, it is located in a suburb of Washington.
5. Throughout the movie, "Being There", Chance dazzles everyone with his insightful comments. Where did Chance receive his education?

Answer: From watching television

Everything Chance knows he learned from watching television. On several occasions, he tells people "I like to watch", which, of course they misinterpret.
6. What quote from Ben Rand is used at the end of the movie "Being There"?

Answer: Life is a state of mind

As Chance walks across the water at the end of the movie, superimposed on the screen is the Ben Rand quote: "Life is a state of mind". It is also the inscription on Peter Sellers' tombstone.
7. After a long illness, Ben Rand dies in the movie "Being There." Who delivers the eulogy at Ben Rand's funeral?

Answer: The President

Ben Rand was a business tycoon and political heavyweight. The President gives a long-winded eulogy, complete with various quotes by Ben Rand, before a pyramid-like mausoleum. Everyone is bored with the eulogy and the pallbearers use the time to contemplate who will be the next candidate for president. They settle on Chance.
8. Who discovers the true identity of Chance, in the movie "Being There"?

Answer: Dr. Robert Allenby

After first believing that Chance might sue the Rands for damages following the minor accident, he questions Chance about his background. Chance maintains the same story, that he is a gardener. Everyone else has assumed things about him, but because of the positive effect Chance is having on the Rands, Dr. Allenby does not give away Chance's secret.
9. When Chance leaves the "Old Man's" house, in the movie, "Being There," he takes with him what he considers a critical device. What device does Chance take with him?

Answer: TV Remote Control

Chance learned everything by watching television, so it is natural for him to take a remote control with him. When Chance meets up with a gang on the streets of Washington, DC, he thinks he can just use the remote control to make them go away.
10. At the end of the movie, "Being There", Chance goes for a walk. Where does he walk?

Answer: On water

In one of the most interesting endings to any movie, after Ben Rand's funeral, Chance walks through the grounds of the Rand Estate. He straightens a small tree that is bent over. He approaches a pond with the Biltmore House in the background, pauses, then begins to walk on the water.

He stops and checks the depth with is umbrella. It goes all the way up to the handle. Then he continues his walk on water.
