We are introduced to the RUF almost at once as the film begins. They are the rebels who claim they are fighting for the people when in fact they run diamond camps that produce the conflict diamonds. During a very emotive collage we see the RUF in their destructive force enter villages and kill people. Superimposed against this are the child soldiers and we are introduced to their new names and what they have become as they hold machine guns and introduce themselves. Now that they are fully brainwashed by the RUF.

Danny Archer is a diamond smuggler who works for Van De Kaap who has a Jewellery Store in London. Van De Kaap basically funds the war between the RUF and the Government so the Rebels cannot flood the market with diamonds, as Van De Kaap tells their buyers that they are rare diamonds.

When Danny needs to get some supplies for his journey with Solomon to find the diamond he persuades Maddy to distract the guard for him so he can get supplies without the soldier seeing. Maddy is not entirely pleased by the whole notion and she wants to accompany Danny to the diamond.

Answer: Solomon almost gets them killed by calling out to the RUF.

Whilst they are hiding in the trees, the RUF are driving past and Solomon thinks that he sees his son. He calls out and gets the attention of the RUF who stop their vehicle and start shooting. Danny and Solomon run and hide while the RUF search the forest for them.

The next morning, Danny tells Solomon about tracking a baboon and terrorists in Angola. He then starts to clean his knife which is bloody with some leaves as he menacingly tells Solomon the above quote.

In the movie Solomon tells Danny that his son walks 5 km to school everyday so that he can be a doctor when he grows up. Danny mentions Solomon's belief again to Maddy when he is trying to gain her sympathy to allow himself and Solomon to travel with the journalist crew as part of the team.

The old man tells Solomon to tell the Poumi (Danny) not to point the gun at him and Solomon tells the old man that Danny is hungry for diamonds like everyone else. The old man says that he hopes they don't discover oil in Africa or then they would have real problems.

Before Solomon is placed before the RUF commander, we see young men being brought before him, and he offers them either their arm being chopped off or being killed. We see them chop off one man's arm and then Solomon is brought before the commander. They are about to chop off his arm when the commander says, "Look at him, he is strong, he can work, put him in the truck."
