"Bloodsport": A Cult Classic Trivia Quiz

Answer: To take a shower

After finding out that his shidoshi Senzo Tanaka is ill, Frank Dux decides to take a leave from the army as a Captain and fight in an underground martial tournament called the "Kumite". Fearing that he might get hurt, Colonel Cooke sends an officer to bring Dux to his office. Dux responds with "Tell him I'll be there after I take a shower".

In the next scene, Dux has mysteriously vanished without a trace while leaving all of the shower heads turned on. As a result, two Criminal Investigation Command officers named Helmer (played by Norman Burton) and Rawlins (played by Forrest Whitaker) are sent out to look for Dux.

Answer: No

Frank Dux goes to visit his former shidoshi Senzo Tanaka (played by Ray Chiao) who has become bed ridden and ill. Upon arriving at the house, he begins to visualize his time as a teenager. With a group of friends, they break into Tanaka's house and attempt to steal things. Frank picks up a katana sword but does not steal it. Upon hearing the noise, Tanaka sends his son Shingo to defend their property in which he kicks Dux and knocks him to his knees. Frank Dux claims he was not going to steal the katana sword.

As a result, Senzo Tanaka and Frank Dux strike a deal that the cops will not be called if Dux agrees to martial arts training. In one scene, Frank Dux helps fend off some bullies that were attacking Shingo at school. Unfortunately Shingo dies and Senzo Tanaka threatens to stop training Dux.

In order to honor both Shingo and Senzo Tanaka, Dux goes through rigorous training that will allow him to participate in a future Kumite (tournament). Shingo's cause of death is never revealed.

Answer: Playing video games

While riding on one of the streetcars on the busy Hong Kong streets, American fighter Ray Jackson (played by Donald Gibb) comes on board. He sits near an Asian lady and attempts to show off his manliness in which she shrugs him off. Frank Dux, also on the streetcar just shakes his head but doesn't say anything.

While at the hotel, Dux again comes across Ray Jackson playing a martial arts arcade game. It is then that Dux engages in conversation, challenging Jackson to a game. After Dux wins they introduce each other.

When Jackson discovers that Dux is also there for the Kumite, he responds with "Aren't you a little young for full contact?" in which Dux rebuts with "Aren't you a little old for video games?" They bond over another round of gaming and support each other throughout the competition.

Answer: Bottom brick

The "dim-mak" according to the judges was translated as "death touch". Based on Senzo Tanaka's reputation as a fighter, the judges did not initially believe that Dux had trained under Tanaka. To prove he was, Dux was required to break the bottom brick in a stack of five.

He was not allowed to remove any of the bricks. He successfully completed the challenge by palm planting the top brick which provided enough force to crush the bottom brick. The judges honored his invitation to the tournament.

Answer: A gold tooth

In his first match, he fights Sadiq Hossein (played by Bernard Mariano). Prior to the match, Dux and Hossein met at the hotel bar at which point Hossein was threatening a woman named Janice (played by Leah Ayers). Dux would defend Janice triggering a poor relation between him and Hossein. During the match, it only takes Dux 12.2 seconds to defeat Hossein setting a new world record.

It is then that many of the fighters know that Dux is a serious competitor in the tournament. As the janitor is cleaning up the blood from the platform, he notices the gold tooth that had been knocked out of Hossein's mouth and he picks it up taking a small bite of it to verify if it was real or not.

Answer: Drags his finger across his throat

As the referee is counting down for the match, Joao Gamez (played by Joao Gomes) points his left index finger at Frank Dux and then proceeds to drag it across his throat (an attempt to intimidate, suggesting he will kill Dux in the match). The threat is very short lived.

As soon as the match begins, Dux kicks Gomez in the head and then kicks him straight off of the platform for a quick victory.

Answer: A bandanna

Just prior to the match, Dux gives Jackson a suggestion on how to possibly win the match. Essentially, he tells him to "go for the stomach" and to "stay away from his right leg". Jackson ignores his call saying "will you stop worrying about me, I've got it all under control. You sound like my mother".

At first Jackson has the upper hand but becomes absorbed in his success by trying to impress the crowd. Although he knocked Chong Li (played by Bolo Yeung) down, he recovers and ultimately wins the match.

He stomps on Jackson's head leaving him unconscious. As Frank Dux comes to Jackson's aid, Chong Li removes Jackson's bandanna and takes it as a prize for his victory.

Answer: Paco

Paco is a Muy Thai style fighter in the competition. He was previously involved in a few fights and ruthlessly defeats his opponents (in one particular match, he knocks a guy completely unconscious with his knee). At first, Paco tries to con Dux into fist bumping as a sign of respect of which Dux complies. Paco sucker punches Dux in the face. Dux eventually trips up Paco and ultimately wins the match with a high spin kick.

Answer: He dies.

On day one of the competition, the crowd chants Chong Li's name upon his first match. Dux, new to the competition wants to know what the big deal was. Victor Lin, Dux's guide for the tournament explains that Chong Li once "killed a guy" at a previous tournament. During his match against Chuan Ip Mung, Chong Li puts him in a headlock and snaps his neck.

He finishes him off with a punch to the face which kills him. Expecting the crowd to revel in his glory, Chong Li is disappointed when the crowd and the judges turn their backs on him to pay respects for the deceased. Chong Li turns and points to Frank Dux shouting "You are next!".

The tone for the final match has now been set.

Answer: He makes him shout "matte".

During the final match, the platform is not longer a flat surface, but instead is reset and built at an angle. Prior to the match, Chong Li threatens Dux with a taunt about his American friend Ray Jackson "For much of the beginning of the match, Frank Dux has the upper hand. "You break my record. Now I break you. Just like I break your friend." Chong Li has prepared for the match by placing a capsule in his shorts. Once down, he crushes the capsule into a powder and throws it in Dux's face causing him to have be partially blind. Chong Li takes control until which point that Dux begins to think about his youth, shidoshi and Ray Jackson. Dux gains the upper hand again and nearly snaps Chong Li's neck.

Instead, Chong Li the villain shouts "matte" and gives up. Dux grabs the bandanna that Chong Li took during an earlier match and returns it to Ray Jackson in the hospital.
