quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Boris Karloff's first appearance in a Frankenstein movie (1931), who did he play?

Answer: the monster

The English actor Colin Clive (1900-1937) played Doktor Frankenstein. His career was cut short by tuberculosis and chronic alcoholism. Karloff had appeared in more than seventy films (some of them serials) before his career took off with his portrayal of Frankenstein's monster.
2. It was not unusual in 1932 for Occidental actors to portray Asian characters on screen. In which film, directed by Charles Brabin and King Vidor, did Boris Karloff play such a role?

Answer: The Mask of Fu Manchu

Charlie Chan was portrayed in "Carries On" by Warner Oland, a Swedish American. Mister Moto was portrayed on film by Peter Lorre who was an Austro-Hungarian Jew. Mister Wu was portrayed in the 1927 film by Lon Chaney Jr., who was born in Colorado to parents of English, Scottish and Irish descent.
3. In which 1932 film does Boris Karloff play the roles of both Imhotep and Ardath Bey?

Answer: The Mummy

There is a sense in which Karloff does NOT play two characters in this movie. He first plays the ancient Egyptian priest Imhotep who is mummified alive for blasphemy in the name of love and he also plays the modern (1931) character Ardeth Bey who is actually Imhotep resurrected.
4. Although Vincent Price starred in far more Edgar Allan Poe films than did Boris Karloff, Karloff appeared in one Poe-inspired movie both times it was made (1935 and 1963). What was this film?

Answer: The Raven

The 1963 remake of "The Raven" was no more closely connected to the original Poe story than was the original (1935) film. Roger Corman made the movie as a horror comedy about three sorcerers -- Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff -- competing with one another.
5. Abbott and Costello partnered with many scary movie stars to produce silly films of varying quality. Boris Karloff appeared in only two of these. Which were they? [In the following film titles, "A&C" stands for "Abbott and Costello."]

Answer: A&C Meet the Killer and A&C Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Oddly enough, Karloff did not appear in "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948); the monster is played by Glenn Strange. Also oddly, the film "Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer" was released in some areas as "Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff" which makes very little sense at all.
6. Boris Karloff is identified with Frankenstein's monster but played that role only three times: in the original, in the 1935 "Bride of Frankenstein" and in which other picture?

Answer: "The Son of Frankenstein" (1939)

"The Son of Frankenstein" (1939) was the third and last Universal movie to cast Boris Karloff as the monster and the first to cast Bela Lugosi in the role of Ygor. There is a sense in which "Son" is a sequel to a sequel, following the events in "The Bride of Frankenstein" (1935).
7. Based on a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson about grave robbing for medical science, which 1945 horror film starred Boris Karloff and, for the last time together, Bela Lugosi?

Answer: The Body Snatcher

Not connected in any way to "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers", this film tells a story based on the tension between the need for cadavers for research and the scruples of those who meet this need.
8. In what 1936 film does Boris Karloff play Dr. Janos Rukh, the discoverer of a meteorite containing "Radium X" which both cures blindness and infects the possessor with a killing touch? Rukh goes slowly mad from the effects of the Radium X and ends in a dramatic burn-out, rather like a meteorite falling from space.

Answer: The Invisible Ray

Bela Lugosi co-stars as Dr. Felix Benet, a fellow scientist who invents an antidote to keep Dr Rukh alive, but, in the end, Rukh's own mother destroys the antidote and thereby her son.
9. Only once did Boris Karloff play the part of the mad scientist who created the monster. In which 1958 film did he play Baron Victor von Frankenstein?

Answer: Frankenstein 1970

The premise of this movie was that Doctor Frankenstein refused to collaborate with the Nazis and was tortured to the point of disfigurement by them. After the war, he raised funds by allowing his family property to be used as the set for a monster movie. He used those funds to make a "monster" who was, in fact, the handsome image of the doctor before he was scarred.
10. An American, played by Nick Adams, visits his fiancée's family in England and finds her father (played by Boris Karloff) conducting weird experiments with radiation from a meteorite. What was the American title for this 1965 movie?

Answer: Die, Monster, Die!

The working title of the film was "The House at the End of the World". The British title of the released motion picture was "Monster of Terror". The script was based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft called "The Colour Out of Space".
