K - People Themed Trivia Questions

1. In Boris Karloff's first appearance in a Frankenstein movie (1931), who did he play?

From Quiz
Boris Karloff Movies

Answer: the monster

2. Don't 'blanche' when I ask you this question, but in 1951, which film, written by Tennessee Williams and directed by Elia Kazan, debuted on the silver screen featuring Vivien Leigh?

From Quiz Take It To The Limit

Answer: A Streetcar Named Desire

The movie "A Streetcar Named Desire" was set in New Orleans, and featured the character Blanche Dubois, an aging Southern belle who has become dependent on her self-effacing sister, Stella. In the Broadway play, the character Blanche was played by actress Jessica Tandy, but in the movie Vivien Leigh was used. The story dealt with domestic abuse, mental illness, homosexuality, suicide and perceived social classes. These topics for the most part were taboo in post WWII America. Elia Kazan was not put off by these topics and showcased them in his production. He forced his audience to face ugly truths about themselves. The 1951 film adaptation differed from the play in order to meet Hays Code restrictions. This included the removal of all mention of homosexuality and a more sympathetic view of all the characters involved.

20. "Rashomon" (1950) Three men take shelter from the rain and recount a dreadful story of rape and murder that two of them witnessed. They eventually notice something has been abandoned in the shelter. What do the three men find in the shelter?

From Quiz What's In A Film? The Films of Akira Kurosawa

Answer: A baby

The story of the rape and murder is told from various perspectives, one of which is that of the murder victim's ghost. The stories are incongruent, and since each witness has a reason to lie, the viewer is never really sure who to believe. Although Kurosawa seems to be saying something rather cynical about human selfishness, when the baby is found and taken in by one of the three men (a poor woodcutter), he counterbalances the bleak vision with a sense of hope in humankind. "Rashomon", which was based on two short stories by Japanese writer Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, starred Kurosawa regulars Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura, and Minoru Chiaki. It was a huge critical success and really made Kurosawa's reputation abroad. It's since become one his most discussed films and a classic of cinema. It was remade in 1974 as "The Outrage", a Western which starred Edward G. Robinson and Paul Newman. About the red herrings: an umbrella would have come in handy, a dagger is a vital part of the story, and I just threw the pig in for fun.
