Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film "Bright Young Things" was adapted from an Evelyn Waugh novel, originally published in 1930. Which novel was this?

Answer: Vile Bodies

The quote from which the novel gets its name is still present in the adaptation, in the mouth of Adam Fenwick-Symes. This occurs in the scene in the mental institution towards the end of the film while talking to Nina about his exhaustion with the life they have been living. He refers to the endless partying in increasingly absurd locations as a mass of "vile bodies".
2. The story starts with Adam being unable to deliver his promised book to his publisher. Why is he not able to publish his book?

Answer: It is confiscated at customs

Although it also gets splattered lightly with vomit while on the ship, we see Adam in the next scene trying to argue the case for why it should not be confiscated at customs after disembarking. Unfortunately for Adam, the customs officer believes that the book is "filth" and he cannot allow it into the country on moral grounds.

This is also the scene in which we first meet Agatha, as she is being searched by customs officers in an adjacent room and Adam and Agatha encounter one another after both their experiences.
3. After Adam's first party back home, he and his friends spill out onto the streets in fancy dress, not knowing where to go to continue the night. Adam suggests they go to the Ritz, but where do they end up?

Answer: 10 Downing Street

A younger woman who idolizes the group invites them over to her house for an afterparty. This seems like nothing too remarkable, until Agatha, having stayed the night, discovers the following morning that it is in the newspapers that photographers saw her and a "gay throng" of partiers turning up at 10 Downing Street in the early hours of the morning. Only after seeing this in the paper does she realise that is where she still is, and the stern man at breakfast is the Prime Minister.
4. Agatha and Miles refer to partaking in a substance implied to be cocaine. What euphemism do they use for it in mixed company?

Answer: Naughty salt

The first time this term is used in the film is during the afterparty. The rather innocent Ms Brown thinks they are literally talking about a spice, and offers to check the kitchen to see what they have. Miles has to correct her.
5. Adam wishes to marry Nina, but can't afford to. Who does he ask for money to facilitate their marriage?

Answer: Nina's father

He takes a day trip out to see her father to ask him for money, explaining that he is a writer and will be coming into money in the future. Although Colonel Blount, played by the remarkable Peter O'Toole, tells him he will and writes him a check, Nina points out the next morning that he has signed it "Charlie Chaplin", so it is not valid.
6. Eventually Adam gets a job writing for the paper, then loses it. He has taken over the Mr Chatterbox column from Simon Balcairn. Why is Simon no longer able to do the job?

Answer: He has ended his own life

Simon realises that he is no longer welcome at any of the nice parties, due to people knowing that he is secretly gossip writer Mr Chatterbox and being unhappy with what he has put in the paper. Unfortunately he does not take this well. He chooses to deal with this information by writing false and libelous information about a large society party, and then ending his own life by placing his head in a gas oven.
7. It is not long until Adam, too, is no longer serving the Mr Chatterbox role. Why was Adam fired?

Answer: He and Nina invent lies to put in his column

Adam wants to avoid Simon's mistakes, so instead of sharing people's secrets, he invites lies to put in the column. Unfortunately for him, the editor notices and warns him to stop. More unfortunate still, Adam entrusts Nina to write one of the columns for him as he has to leave the horse race early, and she puts more falsehoods in the column. The paper's editor calls Adam and fires him.
8. The party lifestyle does not last forever, and Miles reveals near the film's end that he must leave the country and go to France. Why is he doing this?

Answer: He has been exposed as a homosexual

Miles tearfully reveals during the dance party by Agatha's sickbed that he has to catch a train to France. He explains that this is due to some "letters" that he had sent his lover Tiger that are now in the hands of the police. It is not known whether this was malicious or accidental on Tiger's part.
9. Adam first sells, then buys back, his beloved Nina for the price of 78 pounds, 16 shillings and tuppence. How did he come by this number?

Answer: It is the amount of his hotel bill

Adam has no other way to pay his hotel bill, so when his romantic rival Ginger confronts him about how they are both pursuing Nina, Adam agrees to back down: if Ginger pays him the amount of money of the hotel bill. Ginger is appalled, but agrees to do it anyway. Later in the film, once Adam has returned from war, it is Ginger who is in financial straits, and Adam repays him the money, provided that he leaves and lets Adam have Nina back. Nina refers to this as her being "sold again".
10. As it turns out, Miles is not the only person who has to leave the country in a hurry. Who else is in this predicament?

Answer: Ginger

When Adam has returned from war, he visits Nina, Ginger and their young son. Nina is at work, but Ginger confides in Adam that he is "going to be arrested" for smuggling. He wishes to flee, but does not have the money to do this. Adam gives him money on the condition that he leaves at once, and does not take Nina or the child with him.
