Freddie lives at home with his dad, mum and granny. His dad is perfectly content to work in a factory but Freddie wants more for his life. He takes a job as an insurance salesman and is told if he works hard he will be able to earn money enough to live in a big house and drive nice cars. This appeals to Freddie.

Bruce is anti-social and has a quick temper. He has a terrible relationship with his father, mocking him when he drinks and insulting him every chance he gets. He blames his dad for his mum leaving and for not fighting for her when she left to be with another man.

He has no respect for his dad and is openly hostile toward him. He works in the same factory as Freddie's dad and is perfectly OK with that type of work but does believe that he will get out of Cemetery Junction one day.

Snork is a socially awkward friend of Mike and Freddie's. He works as an announcer at the locally railway station and is very content hanging out with his friends and looking for a girlfriend. When Freddie starts his new job, he bumps into Julie, whose father runs the company where Freddie is now working. They see each other now and then when Freddie visits her dad for work and she tells him that she wants to be a photographer and travel the world. She opens his eyes to the fact that there is more to life than what's offered in Cemetery Junction.

The company party is very eye-opening for Freddie. While there he observes how Julie's dad treats the people around him, including his wife. He is not impressed when he sees that a man who has spent so much of his life working is given a cheap bowl as a retirement gift. The man is visibly upset by the lack of recognition he's given yet no-one but Freddie seems to notice.

Julie is engaged to a man named Mike who is Freddie's mentor at his new job. Mike is extremely good at his job because he is aggressive and because he does his job without a conscience. Mike is mentored by Julie's dad, who is also aggressive and cold. Freddie and Mike go out together on a customer call and Freddie watches Mike scare the customers into signing with them. Freddie also watches the interactions between Julie and Mike and believes that Mike doesn't treat Julie with respect.

One day while Freddie is at Julie's house waiting for her father, he watches as Julie's mum brings a cup of tea for her husband while her husband completely ignores her. He watches other interactions and sees that Julie's mum seems unfulfilled and sad.

In an argument with Julie where he professes that he is in love with her, he talks about her mum and asks when was the last time she was thanked by her husband. He also mentions how Julie is destined to end up the same as her. He tells her she won't be able to pursue photography but will end up a lonely housewife.

After he leaves, Julie's mum, who has obviously been eavesdropping, tells Julie that it has been years since her husband has said thank you to her.

Freddie, Bruce and Snork make a plan to leave Cemetery Junction together and head out to a club the night before they leave. Julie accompanies them, taking pictures. While there, Bruce dances with a black woman and as he turns away from her on the dance floor, is approached by two men who call her a name. Bruce starts to walk away but quickly turns around and starts a fight.

He is put in jail for the night.

Snork, Freddie and Bruce go to a cafe quite often where a waitress named Louise works. They are told that she has a crush on Snork and at first Snork doesn't react. Finally he asks her if she does like him and when she says yes, asks her to meet him outside the cafe for a chat. He shows her his horrendous tattoo and to his surprise, she likes it.

Freddie arrives at the train station the morning that he and his friends have agreed to leave Cemetery Junction together. Neither Snork or Mike go with him after all and Freddie is about to leave the train station and head back home when he sees Julie running toward him.

She has a change of heart about her future when she gives Mike the cup of tea test. She gives him a cup of tea while he's reading the paper and watches as he completely ignores her presence. With the blessing of her mum, she leaves with Freddie.
