Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) works for corrupt union boss Johnny Friendly. After being part of one of Johnny's murders, Terry falls for Edie, the sister of the victim. Terry decides to give imformation to the courts about Johnny's murders for Edie and because "he could have had class, he could have been a contender, he could have been somebody, instead of a bum, which he is".

Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) has just graduated from college, so he now spends his time floating on the pool and sleeping with Mr. Robinson's wife.
