Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Hollywood actress, who once starred in the Australian soap opera "Home and Away", played the title role of shopaholic, Rebecca Bloomwood?

Answer: Isla Fisher

It was Omani-born actress, Isla Fisher, who played the title role of Rebecca Bloomwood, in the 2009 romantic comedy, "Confessions of a Shopaholic". Hopelessly addicted to the act of shopping, Fisher's character began the film in serious debt, and as a writer for a gardening magazine, (which was eventually scrapped), had no way of clearing them outright.

Moreover her addiction was so bad that any money she did lay her hands on was immediately used to fuel her shopping habit.
2. At the very beginning of the film, what universal experience did Rebecca compare her shopping addiction to, in order to explain how it made her feel?

Answer: Falling in love

During the opening of the film, via a voice-over, Rebecca spoke at length about the way in which shopping made her feel. Having admitted to owning twelve credit cards, she then compared the feeling of falling in love to the experience of shopping, even going so far as to claim that the latter experience was, for her, even better.

She then went on to explain that "a man will never love you, or treat you as well as a store", and "if a man doesn't fit" he cannot be exchanged "seven days later" for a "cashmere sweater".
3. In keeping with her shopping addiction, Rebecca yearned to work for one particular magazine, and even managed to secure an interview with its editor. The name of the magazine was "Alette", but what type of magazine was it?

Answer: A fashion magazine

From the outset, the film made it clear that Rebecca's dream was to be a journalist for her favourite fashion magazine, "Alette". Indeed Rebecca was so intent on working for "Alette" that she lied on her resume, in order to make herself more appealing to the editor. As a result, she did secure an interview with the magazine, but did not, unfortunately, get the job.
4. What colour scarf, which eventually went on to play an important role in the plot of the film, did Rebecca buy while she was on the way to her interview at "Alette"?

Answer: Green

Unable to resist looking in shop windows while on the way to her interview, Rebecca was soon drawn to a particular green scarf, which was adorning the neck of one particular shop mannequin. Desperate to own it, but finding herself without the actual funds to do so, she ran to a nearby hot dog vendor, in an attempt to get him to give her cashback, which he immediately refused to do.

However one of the man's other customers took pity on Rebecca, believing her lie that she intended to purchase the scarf for her great-aunt, who was sick in hospital, and supplied her with the $20 she needed to complete her purchase.

As viewers soon saw, this set in motion a chain of events that eventually led to Rebecca writing a regular column, under the heading "The Girl in the Green Scarf".
5. "Alette may be your Emerald City, but ___ could be your yellow-brick road!" What is the alliterative name of the magazine that belongs in the blank, which Rebecca, (quite ironically), did secure a position with?

Answer: Successful Saving

Ironically, after learning that the position at "Alette" had been filled, Rebecca was urged by the receptionist to attend an interview at "Successful Saving" instead. Indeed the receptionist took a liking to Rebecca, and encouraged her to seek employment with this other Dantay-West magazine, which was when he uttered the above quotation. Understanding his point immediately, Rebecca turned back, just as the receptionist said "Once you're in...you're in!" More than willing to do whatever it took to secure her dream job, Rebecca then promptly attended an interview for finance magazine, "Successful Saving".
6. During the course of the film, did Rebecca ever attend Shopaholics Anonymous?

Answer: Yes

Rebecca's best friend, Suze, forced her to attend Shopaholics Anonymous, after it was revealed that, despite saying she had thrown all of her past purchases away, Rebecca had in fact kept every single one of them. Still clearly in denial, Rebecca told the group that she had only come there as a favour to her friend, and went on to question whether there was really any harm in enjoying shopping.

Her emotive words regarding Italian leather and the "sheen of silk" eventually pushed many of the other members over the edge, and by the end of her first session, they all had to be brought back from the brink, by reciting the mantra "My will is strong. My wallet is closed. I do not want to shop."
7. Hilariously, what did Rebecca spend $200 on, which she defended when chastised by her best friend, Suze, by insisting that it was "a basic human right"?

Answer: Marc Jacobs underwear

In one of the film's many funny moments, over a bottle of tequila, Rebecca's best friend, Suze, forced her to sit down and go through her bills. What followed was a hilarious conversation, during which a reluctant and defensive Rebecca came up with numerous ludicrous explanations for her ridiculous purchases.

These included the aforementioned Marc Jacobs underwear, but certainly did not stop there, for it was revealed that she had also bought $78 worth of lavender honey because she "felt sorry for the shop assistant", who "had a lazy eye".
8. Throughout the film, shopaholic Rebecca was pursued by an insistent debt collector, whom she did everything, including claiming to be away in Finland, to avoid. What was his name?

Answer: Derek Smeath

Throughout the film, the name Derek Smeath was seen to strike fear into the heart of Rebecca Bloomwood. It was his name, more than anyone else's, that really frightened her. Clearly out of her depth and with no idea how to control her shopping addiction, let alone how to pay off her mounting debts, Rebecca did the only thing she felt she could - put off the inevitable.

However after months of excuses and avoidance, Rebecca found herself face to face with her nemesis, after he tracked her down at "Successful Saving", and eventually confronted her about her own spending habits, in front of a very large audience, which also included her boss.
9. What item was so coveted by Rebecca and another shopper that the pair ended up having a cat fight during a multi-designer sample sale?

Answer: Pucci boots

Despite having been inspired by her new boss, Luke Brandon's, faith in her, Rebecca was soon sent crashing back to her old shopping habits, after coming across a flyer advertising a multi-designer sample sale. With initially innocent intentions, Rebecca passed by several tempting finds, but soon began to unravel upon spotting a particularly stylish pair of Pucci boots, at 50% off.

She even initially put them down, but as she went to walk away she was lured back when another woman picked them up. This immediately led to Rebecca deciding that she wanted them for herself, which resulted in a hilarious cat fight involving the two women.

In a subsequent clip, these boots, along with many other shopping bags, were shown in Rebecca's lounge, indicating that it was she who had emerged as the victor.
10. Having overcome many obstacles, (including her addiction to shopping), who was it that Rebecca embarked on a romantic relationship with, at the end of the film?

Answer: Her boss

After several misunderstandings and obstacles, Rebecca finally ended up with her boss at "Successful Saving", Luke Brandon. The pair had initially kissed at the ball, but things then went pear shaped when it was revealed that Rebecca, the Girl with the Green Scarf, was actually in serious debt.

However at the very end of the film the pair made up, and Rebecca became Luke's girlfriend, and also went to work for his new company.
