1. Who does Ren�e Zellweger play?

Answer: Ruby

Ruby is the farm girl who comes to help Ada with her current living conditions.

2. What is the name of Ada's father?

Answer: Monroe

He dies very early on in the film, leaving Ada to survive all on her own. Ada is very well-read, but does not know how to survive on a farm. Ada is played by Nicole Kidman. The name 'Monroe' is his last name - we do not find out his first name during the film.

3. What is the name of the soldier who is in love with Ada, and who leaves the war to come back home to her.

Answer: Inman

Inman is played by Jude Law, who was nominated for an Oscar for this part.

4. Which war is the film set in?

Answer: American Civil War

There are some very violent scenes near the beginning of the film, that show very vividly what it must have been like.

5. What is the name of the patrol who burst into people's homes and towns, searching for men who should be fighting in the war?

Answer: Home Guard

These are the nasty people who shoot anyone they find who they think should be fighting, or who they simply do not like. At the end of the film, one of them shoots Inman.

6. When Inman stays with the old woman, she cleans his wounds and tells him that she believes a person can survive on a particular animal. What is this animal?

Answer: goat

She says they give milk, cheese, good company and also meat. She then kills one of her goats!

Answer: the girl

Inman tells the officer that if he leaves his clothes and weapons, then he can go free. It is at this point that the girl brings out her gun and shoots the officer in the back as he runs off.

Ada doesn't believe she will see anything, but ends up seeing a man stumbling towards her in the snow. He is walking between some trees and two crows are flying above him. Ada believes the man she saw was Inman, and that he will one day come back to her.
