Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the difference between a child's daemon and the daemon of an adult?

Answer: a child's daemon changes and an adult's daemon settles on a form

Lyra's daemon, Panatalaimon, or Pan, changes form frequently throughout the movie. The two main forms he takes are that of a ferret-like creature and a bird, but other shapes are seen in the movie. In one very funny scene, when Pan learns that that they are going north, he comments that it is cold there, and turns into a white-coated ermine.

When Lyra's uncle first arrives at the college, he comments on the fact that her daemon hasn't settled yet. An adult's daemon settles onto one form that reflects the adult's personality.
2. What is Lord Asriel's daemon?

Answer: a snow leopard

We see Lord Asriel's daemon with him when he comes to the college to make his report and visit his niece. At one point he is lecturing Lyra on her behaviour and his daemon threatens her daemon. Lyra's daemon morphs into a cat at that point, but he is still smaller than the snow leopard, named Stelmaria.
3. Do a person and their soul share pain?

Answer: Yes

Not only is this remarked upon, but there are several instances where we see this happen. In one scene Mrs. Coulter tells Lyra not to fight with her because she will win. While she is saying that, her Golden Monkey daemon attacks Pan, Lyra's daemon. Lyra feels the pain that Pan feels and cries at Mrs. Coulter to stop, saying that it hurts.

When Lyra shuts Mrs. Coulter's daemon's fingers in the window, Mrs. Coulter's fingers are obviously hurt.
4. What is unusual about Mrs. Coulter's daemon?

Answer: It is mute.

You often see people conversing with their daemons, and Lyra often discusses problems and solutions with Pan, who sometimes comes up with conclusions that Lyra has missed. However you never hear Mrs. Coulter's daemon speak a single word, and one of the scientists makes reference to 'her mute daemon'.

She is also the only person you see strike her own daemon. Interestingly enough, she doesn't seem to feel that pain, but she does immediately scoop it up and apologise to it.
5. What is unusual about witches' daemons?

Answer: They can be separated from their people by great distances.

When Lyra first meets the witch Serafina Pekkala, she asks her where her daemon is. Serafina replies that witches and their daemons are able to be separated by great distances. Serafina spends a fair amount of time with Lyra and we never see her daemon, nor is anything ever said about its magical abilities. Perhaps this is because witches live to be so old.
6. Ragnar Sturlusson, King of the Polar Bears, desperately wants his own daemon.

Answer: True

We first learn this when Mrs. Coulter tells Lyra about her travels in the north, and about meeting with the King of the Polar Bears. Lyra later uses this knowledge against him, to keep him from killing her. The Polar Bears are armoured bears, and we learn from lorek Byrnison that their armour houses their souls.
7. Whose daemon does Lyra pretend to be?

Answer: lorek Byrnison's

When Lyra finds herself threatened by the great bears, she remembers what Mrs. Coulter told her about Ragnar's desire for his own daemon. She tells Pan to hide and informs Ragnar that she is a daemon who has been given to lorek Byrnison. She proves this to him by using the compass to answer a question for the king, that she had no way of knowing.

She tells the king that she would rather be his daemon, but the only way she can do this is if the king kills lorek in battle. Since the king has already defeated lorek, he believes that this will be an easy task, but he is wrong.
8. What is happening to the kids being kidnapped by the Gobblers and taken to Bolvanger?

Answer: They are being separated from their daemons.

Because there is evidence that "dust" is entering people, through their daemons, once they reach adolescence, experiments are being done to separate children from their daemons. Mrs. Coulter claims that this is being done to protect the children from being corrupted, and keeping them pure, but one has to question her motives.
9. Which character is separated from his or her daemon?

Answer: Billy Costa

Lyra's friends Billy and Roger are taken by the Gobblers to Bolvanger. It is the finding of their names on the list that sends Lyra north looking for them. Traveling with the Gyptians and lorek Byrnison, Lyra is troubled by something coming from the haunted shack up ahead.

She gets lorek to take her there, where she finds Billy, shivering and less than whole, because he has been given the "operation" to separate him from his daemon. When in Bolvanger, Lyra overhears things that she shouldn't hear, and is put into the chamber to have her daemon separated as well.

She is rescued at the last minute by Mrs. Coulter.
10. What is remarkable about the daemons of the Tartars, the northern fighters in the employ of the Magesterium?

Answer: Their daemons are all wolves.

They are seen guarding Bolvanger when the children are trying to escape, which results in a huge battle with the Gyptians. Every Tartar has a wolf for a daemon, which is very unusual given the diversity of daemons among the rest of the people. The daemons do fight with the Tartars, but the Tartars also fight.
