Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The movie "Arlington Road" is memorable because of its final few moments. What actually happens?

Answer: The bad guy wins

In a chilling final scene, Michael Faraday (played by Jeff Bridges) is murdered by his neighbour, Oliver Lang (Tim Robbins) with a car bomb. The movie keeps you guessing about who the good guy and bad guy is right to the end, until it becomes all too clear.
2. The movie "Memento" has an interesting twist not just in its plot, but also in the way the scenes are played out. What is odd about the way the movie is presented?

Answer: It runs backwards

The chronology of the film is entirely in reverse. At the film's end, we find out what happened at the beginning, which is the main character being responsible for murdering his wife, and apparently deliberately losing his memory.
3. M. Night Shyamalan is now well-known for his plot twists, but the device used in his film "The Sixth Sense" took many viewers by surprise. What was it?

Answer: Killing off the main character early in the film without revealing he was dead

Bruce Willis stars as Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a psychiatrist who is treating a young patient that claims to "see dead people". The big twist is that Crowe is one of the dead people that he sees!
4. Alfred Hitchock's film, "Psycho", is probably most famous for its shower scene, but it also has a very interesting plot twist involving the main character, Norman Bates. What is it?

Answer: His mother is dead

Norman spends a lot of time talking to and yelling out to his mother, who sits in a rocking chair in another room. It isn't till the climax of the film that we find out she's a corpse!
5. The film "Fight Club" has a twist, where it is revealed that that one of the main characters doesn't actually exist.

Answer: True

Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt) turns out to be a figment of the main character's imagination. Some describe him as suffering from a split personality disorder (or more specifically, Dissociative Identity Disorder); as the narrator (played by Edward Norton) invents Tyler independently and believes him to be a separate person.
6. "Citizen Kane" often makes critics' lists of the best films of all time. It features an interesting twist in that we find out that the main character's last word, "Rosebud", refers to an item from his childhood. What does it turn out to be?

Answer: A sled

Millionaire newspaper tycoon, Charles Foster Kane, utters the word "Rosebud" just before he dies. The film centres around the search by journalists to find out its meaning, with a range of theories under consideration (including that it may be a woman).

The surprise ending tells us that his last thoughts were of his innocent childhood spent sledding in the snow. The film is heralded for a range of qualities, including not only its clever plot and great acting performances, but also the use of photography and film technology which were considered well ahead of their time (the film was made in 1941).
7. What is the disturbing twist to the film "Soylent Green", about the product with the same name?

Answer: It is made from people

Yep, the city has been feeding its starving people with, well, people! The film is set in 2022 and deals with a situation of overpopulation, lots of pollution and not enough food. The Soylent company comes to the apparent rescue with its nutritious product to feed the struggling population. They claim it is made from plankton but it turns out to be something much more sinister.
8. In "The Butterfly Effect", the film ends with a big twist. The main character, rather than getting together with the love of his life, ends up inadvertently killing her.

Answer: False

Evan, played by Ashton Kutcher, discovers he can re-live various parts of his life and in doing so has the chance to change its outcome dramatically. He goes through many alternate realities during the film. Interestingly, the film has FOUR alternate endings depending on which version you watch! In the original cinematic release, he goes back to the day he meets Kayleigh and never befriends her.

In the Director's Cut, he intentionally lets himself die during childbirth.
9. "The Village" presents a very interesting twist. What do we find out at the very end of the film?

Answer: It takes place in the modern world

The viewer is led to believe that the whole plot takes place during the 19th century. The plot revolves around the mysterious outside world, which the local villagers are afraid to venture into. However, we eventually discover that this is simply the world we all know, the world of the present day.
10. What's the final twist in the 1968 film "The Planet of the Apes"?

Answer: The planet is actually Earth

In the original 1968 film, George Taylor (played by Charlton Heston) is an astronaut flung through outer space and into the future. He lands on a strange planet, where apes rule and humans and second-class citizens. In the final, chilling scene, Taylor discovers that the Statue of Liberty survived the destruction of earth that led to the apes coming to power.
