In a chilling final scene, Michael Faraday (played by Jeff Bridges) is murdered by his neighbour, Oliver Lang (Tim Robbins) with a car bomb. The movie keeps you guessing about who the good guy and bad guy is right to the end, until it becomes all too clear.

The film is heralded for a range of qualities, including not only its clever plot and great acting performances, but also the use of photography and film technology which were considered well ahead of their time (the film was made in 1941).
