Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A palace based on the Bavarian Neuschwanstein Castle

Answer: Aurora

The final animated movie Walt Disney created before his death in 1966, "Sleeping Beauty" featured the Princess Aurora who, after pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel, fell into a deep sleep due to an evil witch's curse. The second half of the movie followed Prince Philip's attempt to cross through the thick briars and enter the castle to save her from the witch Maleficent to free her from the curse.
Sleeping Beauty's Castle was based on the German Neuschwanstein Castle, which is what Disney's imagineers based the Walt Disney World attraction on.
2. A forest containing a mine and a single, overcrowded hut

Answer: Snow White

The first Disney princess, Snow White first appeared in the Disney line-up in 1937 in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" where, after being pursued into the woods, she came across a house of seven dwarfs and attempted to elude a witch, the Wicked Queen.

The witch succeeded in deceiving Snow White and getting her to eat a poison apple, as one is typically wont to do, and poor Snow White found herself needing to be awakened by a prince and true love's first kiss. Sound familiar?
3. A city of mystery and enchantment on the Jordan River

Answer: Jasmine

The city in question is Agrabah, the Middle Eastern locale of the movie "Aladdin" where Jasmine resided in the Sultan's palace. Although filmmakers initially planned to have the movie set in Iraq, the original story was actually set in China; the film instead moved the fictional city further west. Jasmine, the princess of the movie, was known for being forced to remain in the palace.

It was not until she snuck into the bazaar that she met Aladdin and set their destined romance into motion.
4. The island kingdom of Corona

Answer: Rapunzel

Featuring buildings that seemed to reflect locations in Coastal Germany, the kingdom of Corona, neighbour to six other kingdoms, was the setting seen in the 2010 animated film "Tangled", which featured the Disney fairy tale princess Rapunzel. Rapunzel, as per her story, spent much of her time locked away in a tower, having been taken from Corona at a young age and stowed away there outside the kingdom.

The original story was written by German fairy tale authors The Brothers Grimm.
5. A kingdom known as Atlantica, deep beneath the ocean.

Answer: Ariel

Based on the work of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, "The Little Mermaid" featured the Disney princess Ariel, one of seven daughters to King Triton, the ruler of the Kingdom of Atlantica. Although much of the movie saw Ariel under the sea as a mermaid, she also spent three days walking with the humans due to a magical deal she made with the sea witch Ursula. Prince Eric, Ariel's love interest in the film, is said to be of Danish descent, implying that the land portions of the film occur in Denmark.
6. Tsenacommacah, in 'The New World'.

Answer: Pocahontas

Pocahontas, a member of the Powhatan tribe in what would become Virginia, featured as the Disney princess in the 1995 film "Pocahontas", which saw English settlers occupying the city of Jamestown in an attempt to colonize what would inevitably be the United States. Pocahontas spent much of the movie dodging her seemingly-fated marriage to Kokoum while also falling for John Smith, one of the more sensible settlers in a time when battle loomed on the horizon.

In the centuries after the setting of the film, the real area known as Tsenacommacah would be dissolved.
7. The DunBroch Kingdom of Medieval Scotland

Answer: Merida

Merida, the first Pixar Disney princess in the canon, was introduced in the 2012 film "Brave". In this movie, Merida, fighting with her mother, sought the help of a witch to solve her arranged marriage issues only to realize that dabbling in magic could have dire consequences.

The movie depicted Merida as a strong and dextrous character while much of her strife involved mending familial relationships and seeking her own happiness. Disney animators based the movie's DunBroch Castle on the real Scottish castle of Dunnottar in Stonehaven.
8. A town and forest in 18th-century Provincial France

Answer: Belle

Belle of "Beauty and the Beast", of course, wished for more than her provincial life in the 1991 movie based on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont's "La Belle et la Bête", and throughout the film the French influence was everywhere from the rural town of her humble origin to the Beast's castle, inspired by the Chateau De Chambord in Loir-et-Cher in Central France.

The movie was immensely popular resulting in several Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and a Broadway show. In the movie, Disney princess Belle sought to find the human inside the Beast, a magically-transformed man locked away in his enchanted castle by what could be considered a curse.
9. China during the Han Dynasty

Answer: Mulan

In the 1998 film "Mulan", Fa Mulan defied tradition and the wishes of her ancestors to go forth in her father's place, pose as a man, join the army, and defeat the Huns in battle. As such, the movie ended up featuring a number of locations, all in China, and all inspired by settings from the Han Dynasty.

There were scenes in the film set on the Great Wall of China and Beijing's Forbidden City as well. Although released later in the Disney Renaissance, "Mulan" was considered one of the great animated Disney classics by critics and audiences in the 1990s.
10. The bayou city of New Orleans, Louisiana

Answer: Tiana

Although the origin of "The Princess and the Frog" stretches back to the similar Brothers Grimm story, the 2009 movie situates itself in Louisiana, U.S. instead of in Germany where similar Disney movies by the same authors have been, due in part to the E. D. Baker story "The Frog Princess".

In the film, Tiana lived in New Orleans and the movie followed her out into the swampy bayous and into the world of Hoodoo. New Orleans was also featured as a setting in the 2003 movie "The Haunted Mansion" as it was the home of the Gracey Manor.
