Ian Curtis and Deborah Woodruff were married on August 23rd 1975. He was 19 and she was 18.

After a performance of 'Leaders of Men', we see Rob Gretton approach the band, shower them with compliments then ask to be their manager. They initially turn him down because Terry Mason is their manager. Rob then makes fun of Terry for not having a phone, asking him how he expects to do deals without a phone.

The next day Ian calls Rob (getting him out of bed) to tell him that they want him as their manager.

This takes place when Nick brings Debbie over to Ian's place for the first time. Without a word, Ian offers her a pack of cigarettes, which she shyly shakes her head to. They then have this conversation.

After Ian and Nick take Mrs. Brady's tablets, they go to visit Debbie at her house. After having a conversation with Debbie's mum, a dog comes running out at Ian and he bends down saying, "Cool! A dog! What's her name?" to which Debbie's mum replies, "Tess."

Ian and Nick go to visit Mrs. Brady after school. After excusing himself to use the bathroom, Ian goes through the old woman's medicine cabinet and takes a few of her tablets. Looking in a book, he tells Nick that they are usually prescribed for schizophrenia, then says this quote.

He is arguing with Bernie over a sleeping bag. Steven is driving the band home from a gig in London in a car with a broken heater. Ian asks to borrow the sleeping bag for 10 minutes, then he could have it back. Bernie refuses so Ian pulls at it. The ensuing scuffle ends in Ian's seizure.

It is documented that Ian was aware of his epilepsy before the gig in London but had not told the band. However, in the movie it appears that Ian is not aware of his condition prior to his fit. There is a clip earlier in the movie which could be construed as a clue of things to come, where Ian is staring at the chalkboard at a particular scientific formula in school and appears to have what could be described as an 'absence'. Ian's attacks in the movie were usually convulsions.

They are coming home from a house party when Ian tells Debbie it would be okay for her to sleep with other men. Debbie says, "When you say a thing like that it makes me think you don't love me anymore," to which Ian replies, "I don't think I do." Debbie then walks away, shocked, and a reluctant Ian slowly begins to follow her, which is when the song begins.

It plays over Debbie searching through Ian's things for an indication as to why Ian has been behaving so out of character.

She then asks what his favorite colour is, and that hers is purple. He replies, "Man City blue." She asks him what he means, and he replies that his favorite football team is Man City, and they wear blue, hence Man City blue.

The song starts as Annik comes to meet Ian on the platform at the train station. The rest of the band say 'Hello' and Hooky even kisses her on the cheek but Ian does not appear to acknowledge her presence. The next shot is Ian in the recording studio laying down the vocals for 'Isolation' while Annik sits staring at him woefully.

After declaring that he is a "believer in Joy Division", he proposes that they play, he manages, and they all get "stinking rich and famous" and buy great big houses in Cheshire.

The movie '24 Hour Party People' was about the life of Rob Gretten and had a small mention of Ian Curtis and Joy Division.

The nurse hands the baby to Debbie and says, "Congratulations, mum and dad." The idea is clearly scary to Ian and he runs outside for a smoke. The film portrays Ian as having very little or no relationship with his daughter as his band and affair with Annik appear to take precedence over family life.

In reality Ian couldn't bring himself to hold his daughter for fear of a seizure.

After this, Debbie calls to see if Ian is there. Ian makes a gesture that he doesn't want Debbie to know he's there and Rob lies at first, but gives the game away by making pointed comments in Ian's direction. She asks if Annik is with him, then tells Rob to tell Ian she wants a divorce.

Anyone who knows the story of Ian Curtis knows how it ends. He goes to his marital home and watches a movie when he sees that Debbie is not there. When she comes home he makes a desperate plea for her not to divorce him, which she refuses. He then shouts at her to get out. She leaves and the rest, as they say, is history!
