Nurse Ratched was the antagonist to Jack Nicholson's Randle McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975). McMurphy was a criminal serving a short sentence who was transferred to a mental institution for evaluation. He decided he would rather spend time in the hospital environment than in prison so he planned to stay.

The only problem was that the ward he was transferred to was controlled by the steely and sadistic Nurse Ratched.

The movie followed the love affair between Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley and ambulance driver Frederick Henry during WWI.

Hemingway's Barkley was noted as a strong female lead in a time before such characters were more commonplace.

It followed the antics of Army surgeons in a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit during the Korean War. Nurse Houlihan was the target of many pranks pulled by the surgeons.

Loretta Swit took over the role of Major Houlihan on the TV series "M*A*S*H". During the run of the show, Major Houlihan became much more than just a foil for the antics of the surgeons.
