The character who finds the bird finds it because he is convinced that something odd is going on in the forest, so tiny and fast that it's near impossible to detect with the human eye. He has cameras, GPS trackers and a special helmet to improve his hunt to discover what's truly going on.
Three black birds are going after a smaller bird; one of them attacks it and it goes in for a crash landing. The male character sees all of this and he catches the bird.

The Boggans are evil rat-like creatures who are fighting for control of the forest. They are often gray with sharp fangs and they like to wear hides of animals they have killed. Their aim in life is to overpower the queen and take over the forest spreading rot and decay.
