Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Documentary about a female jaguar

Answer: Jungle Cat

This 1960 documentary written and directed by James Algar was released by Disney with the promo "The Jaguar - Savage Lord of the Amazon!" As well as showing something of the family structure as they go about their daily routines, the film captured encounters with crocodiles and wild pigs, in which the jaguar showed her prowess.

It won an award at the Berlin Film Festival as the Best Documentary Film Suitable for Young People.
2. James Bond investigates the loss of a space shuttle

Answer: Moonraker

The eleventh film in the James Bond series from Eon Productions was the fourth to star Roger Moore as 007. Accompanied by the lovely Dr. Holly Goodhead (Lois Chiles), CIA agent and astronaut, he tracks down the missing shuttle, and foils the plans of Hugo Drax (Michael Lonsdale) to destroy humanity and replace them with the carefully-selected people he has stored safely in a space station. Along the way, he has another encounter with Jaws (Richard Kiel), Since Drax's plan used a toxin extracted from a rare orchid growing only in the Amazon rainforest, the chase ends up there along the way.

These scenes were filmed at Iguazu falls, despite the fact that they are in the wrong part of the country, Due to technical difficulties (the boat got stuck on rocks, and couldn't be freed to go tumbling over the falls), the actual scene involving the waterfall was actually shot in Pinewood studios with a miniature replica.
3. In the 1740s, a Jesuit priest tries to convert a Guarani community to Christianity

Answer: The Mission

Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) establishes his mission near the top of Iguazu Falls, over which an earlier missionary had been seen plummeting, tied to a cross, in the opening sequence. He found a more receptive audience when he played music, and set up a successful place of interaction between the two civilizations.

The mission becomes a place of sanctuary for Roderigo Mendoza (Robert de Niro), a slave trader who had killed his brother after finding Felipe in bed with Roderigo's fiancée. The political ramifications of the 1750 Treaty of Madrid lead to the destruction of the mission, despite Father Gabriel's attempts to protect the community.
4. A gay couple from Hong Kong try to save a failing relationship on a trip to Argentina

Answer: Happy Together

Ho Po-wing (Leslie Cheung) and Lai Yiu-fai (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) have a volatile relationship, to say the least, in this 1997 Hong Kong film whose English title comes from a hit song by The Turtles. Inspired by an image of Iguazu Falls on a lamp purchased in Buenos Aires, they start to go there, but break up after an argument on the way.

There are regular references to the falls during the film, near the end of which Lai finally visits the falls and returns home to Hong Kong, having reconciled with the father from whom he had stolen the money for the original trip.
5. Two Miami police detectives go undercover to fight drug traffickers

Answer: Miami Vice

This 2006 film was based on the 1980's television series of the same name, which starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett (played in the film by Colin Farrell) and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs (portrayed on screen by Jamie Foxx) as the two undercover cops. Crockett and Tubbs pose as drug smugglers to work their way into the inner circles of a drug cartel operating in Miami, where most of the film's action is set. Nevertheless, filming locations included a number of sites in the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Paraguay, as well as the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls.
6. Five freestyle football players want to meet Diego Maradona

Answer: In the Hands of the Gods

The title of this 2007 documentary is a reference to Maradona's famous 'Hand of God' goal. If you follow the sport, you will know exactly what happened; if not, you probably aren't interested in the details. The five Englishmen who want to meet their idol perform spectacular tricks in public spaces, soliciting money from passers-by to raise the funds they need to continue on their journey, which is eventually successful.

Their journey starts in New York City, and wanders across the Americas before they reach their goal in Buenos Aires.
7. An archaeologist searches for a possibly-alien artefact

Answer: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr. is not your run-of-the-mill archaeologist - when he has a chance to get into the field and retrieve priceless artefacts, he becomes "Indiana" Jones (Indy to friends), a man of action rather than scholarly reflection. In the fourth film to star Harrison Ford in the role, Indy is on indefinite leave from his university following some unpleasantness involving Soviet agents and mummified corpses.

He heads to Peru, where crystal skulls have been recovered, and they are reputed to have psychic powers.

The waterfall scenes were filmed at Iguazu Falls, even though they ostensibly took place in the Peruvian Andes.
8. During the 2006 São Paulo riots, a widowed piano teacher gets involved with a criminal organisation

Answer: Time of Fear

This 2009 Brazilian film (originally titled in Portuguese 'Salve Geral') was the winner of Best Film at the 2010 Miami Brazilian Film Festival. When her son is jailed following an accidental killing, Lúcia (Andrea Beltrão) visits him, and meets Ruiva (Denise Weinberg), one of the heads of a large criminal organisation. Ruiva offers her financial assistance in return for her involvement in small-scale criminal activities such as smuggling contraband into the jail.

It all comes to a head on Mother's Day, with the confrontation between the criminal gangs and the corrupt police leading to the largest riots in Brazilian history.
9. Two heart surgeons find their marriage under stress when she falls pregnant

Answer: An Open Heart

This 2012 French-Argentine production (originally titled 'À coeur ouvert', which has also been given the English title 'A Monkey on my Shoulder' by some distributors) stars Juliette Binoche as Mila, and Édgar Ramírez as her husband Javier. They love each other with as much passion as each applies to their surgery, but things become difficult when Mila is surprised to find herself pregnant, just as Javier has been suspended from practice due to his problems with alcohol.

Their planned move to South America has to be placed on hold, but when Mila is hospitalised with a head wound, we get to go there in a dream sequence.
10. T'Challa finds his reign in Wakanda challenged by his cousin N'Jadaka

Answer: Black Panther

This 2018 film features the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name. The Black Panther is in reality T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), latest in a line of superheroes who gain their power from ingesting a special herb that was influenced by the metal vibranium in a meteor that had landed, several centuries ago, in the area now known as Wakanda.

The people pf Wakanda have developed a technologically superior culture, but conceal it carefully, pretending to be an impoverished and underdeveloped African nation.

The struggle for power between T'Challa and his cousin N'Jadaka (Michael B. Jordan) includes a confrontation in which T'Challa is thrown over a waterfall (a scene filmed at Iguazu Falls) and presumed dead, temporarily. Don't worry, the good guy comes through.
