Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At 216 minutes, this movie is fairly long, which makes it even more incredible that no woman in the entire movie has one speaking line. Which movie is it?

Answer: 'Lawrence of Arabia'

Just goes to show that you don't need a romantic lead to make a successful movie.
2. Which of these four actors WAS NOT offered a role in the classic 1969 western 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'?

Answer: George C Scott

Who knows where Robert Redford would be today had one of these great actors said yes.
3. In the 1998 comedy 'Rushmore', Ms. Cross shows young Max a picture of her dead husband. Who portrays the husband, who also happens to be a co-writer of the movie?

Answer: Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson co-wrote 'Rushmore', with Anderson directing. It's a great movie, but not for all tastes. They also worked together on 1996's 'Bottle Rocket', with Anderson again directing, and Wilson starring with brother Luke.
4. What was the name of the gardener portrayed by Peter Sellers in the 1979 comedy 'Being There'?

Answer: Chance

Another great comedy. Sellers plays a dim-witted gardener who must enter the real world after his lifelong employer dies. The only problem is that the only thing Chance knows about the real world is what he's seen on TV. Sellers should have won an Oscar for this movie, in my opinion.
5. John Huston had been trying to make 'The Man Who Would Be King' since the 1950's, finally making it in 1975, starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine. Which pair of actors was NOT considered to play the leads?

Answer: James Garner and Steve McQueen

Another excellent movie that many people haven't seen. It's based on a Rudyard Kipling story, and it's full of action, humor, and rousing adventure.
6. Other than 1993's 'Schindler's List', what was the last black and white movie to win the Oscar for Best Picture?

Answer: The Apartment

'The Apartment' won the Best Picture Oscar in 1960. The other three all won in the early to mid-50's. Wilder reportedly based the party-girl character on Marilyn Monroe, who he had grown to dislike because of her poor work ethic and demands for star treatment during 'Some Like it Hot'.
7. Which Akira Kurosawa movie was later remade into 1967's 'A Fistful of Dollars' with Clint Eastwood and 1996's 'Last Man Standing' with Bruce Willis?

Answer: Yojimbo

'Yojimbo' is a great samurai-western-black comedy-war movie. If you've never seen a Kurosawa film, you have many excellent choices, but 'Yojimbo' should be at the top of the list. 'Sanjuro', the sequel, was good, but not as good.
8. In the 1963 John Huston flick 'The List of Adrian Messenger', several prominent actors appear incognito. Of these four actors, which one was NOT in disguise for the movie?

Answer: George C Scott

Once again, this is a great movie that isn't really well known. Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Curtis all appear in disguise, totally unrecognizable, until the end, when they take off their masks. It's a great murder mystery.
9. In the 1996 Woody Allen comedy 'Everybody Says I Love You', all of the stars sing their own songs except one. Which one?

Answer: Drew Barrymore

It is rumored that Woody did not tell the actors that the movie was a musical until after they agreed to be in it. Woody had to tell Goldie Hawn to sing a little worse, for she sounded too good. Drew Barrymore had to convince Woody that she sang too bad, so her voice was dubbed.
10. In the 1988 comedy 'A Fish Called Wanda', John Cleese's character's name is Archie Leech. Which of these actors was born with the name Archibald (Archie) Leach?

Answer: Cary Grant

A tribute? Maybe.
11. What movie does this quote come from:'I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.'?

Answer: This Is Spinal Tap

Dwarves dancing around a mini replica of Stonehenge...it doesn't get any better than that.
12. Director Michael Mann has directed such hits as 'Heat', 'Last of the Mohicans', and 'Thief'. But he originally wrote and produced what popular 1980's TV show?

Answer: Miami Vice

I like Michael Mann.
13. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn starred in many movies together. Which one of these IS NOT one of them?

Answer: 'Suddenly, Last Summer'

'Adam's Rib' and 'Pat and Mike' are my favorites.
14. William Goldman is one of the most accomplished screenwriters in Hollywood. Which movie did he NOT write the screenplay for?

Answer: 'The Sting'

I love almost every one of his movies...his others include 'Misery', 'Heat', 'A Bridge Too Far', 'Chaplin', and 'Absolute Power'. Good stuff.
15. Clint Eastwood is probably my favorite actor. He's also an accomplished director. Which of these movies did he NOT direct?

Answer: 'Dirty Harry'

Eastwood is the man!
